Prep Redzone New England Camp: Offensive Line Notebook, Part I

In this feature from Prep Redzone New England's Stock Up Showcase, I share my positional notes for the group aforementioned in this article's title. More coverage on different groups will be forthcoming in the days to follow, so be sure to check back later!</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Offensive Line Notebook</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Is it any coincidence that one of the most athletic linemen in attendance also had one of the better performances? Highlighted with a 4.48-second shuttle and 8'11" broad jump, [player_tooltip player_id='1474052' first='Ernesto' last='Ballesteros'] might have performed taller than he is (a hair under 6'4"). The day before attending this event, I was at the NJFCA's annual coaches clinic where guest speaker Rich Alercio of St. Johnsbury Academy (VT) spoke about pass protection. One of the details of Alercio's philosophy is for offensive lineman to have their weight more on their inside foot. Ballesteros' coaches might share Alercio's school of thought as I watched him have his weight to the inside, mitigating against any threat of an inside rush. This primed him for a later rep that I witnessed, where Ballesteros' opponent foolishly took the inside path and got crushed. Ballesteros had all his balance and power, pummeling him into the ground for an easy win.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>[player_tooltip player_id='517419' first='Travis' last='Bowen'] was a is a big-bodied 2029 graduate with tremendous upside. Standing at all of 6'4" and 284lbs, he has all the size to push for a varsity role. Still not out of his freshman year of high school, he an opportunity to continue to develop into a good one. At one moment, it I noted how Bowen's feet were staggered incorrectly. His inside foot was back, creating an open and welcoming rush lane to the inside, and his outside foot was forward, leaving him unable to protect off the edge. Cleaning up such fundamentals ought to enable Bowen to rise the depth chart - quickly.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>One of my bigger regrets this weekend was not getting a better look at [player_tooltip player_id='1634229' first='Quinn' last='Grushey'] as I did not get an opportunity to watch him compete. Why I have such a regret is for as large (6'3", 272lbs) and young (2029 graduate) that Grushey is, he had a tremendous ability to bend and maintain that pad level.
