As we head into the month of December, we have entered the next round of ranking updates in the state of Kentucky. The first class to be updated in this round is the class of 2028. With that being said, I have been taking the past week to break down these rankings by position. After already covering the offensive side of the ball, I have now turned my attention to the defensive side of the ball. With the defensive line and linebackers already taken care of, here our top defensive backs in the class of 2028 in the state of Kentucky.

[player_tooltip player_id='1638813' first='Grayden' last='Reid'] continued to prove that he is one of the top overall players in the state this season. Reid lines up at corner where he locks down his side of the field in man coverage. You won't see great coverage stats for him because quarterbacks don't target him as receivers simply can't get open against him. He does a great job of jamming receivers off the line of scrimmage then opening up to mirror their routes, staying in their hip pocket the whole time. Grayden has shown solid ball skills when he is targeted, recording one interception this season. Reid has also shown the ability to provide support against the run, finishing this season with 48 tackles and two tackles for loss in 13 games. He also recorded one sack and made an impact on offense as a sophomore, catching five passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns. Reid currently holds several Power 4 offers and I expect that list to continue to grow over the next two seasons.

[player_tooltip player_id='953600' first='Kyle' last='Sledge Jr.'] caught our attention as a freshman and continued to stand out this season. He lined up at safety where he was very impressive in pass coverage. Sledge does a great job of reading route combinations and flowing through the secondary to put himself in a position to make a play. When the ball is thrown his way, he has shown the ability to break on the ball to break up the pass. He has also shown the ability to stop the run, finishing the year with 47.5 tackles and one tackle for loss in 10 games. Sledge has also proven to be a dangerous returner on special teams, returning one punt for a touchdown this season. Kyle will be a player for college coaches to have on their radar going into his junior year.

[player_tooltip player_id='1089873' first='Andrew' last='Davis'] is another defensive back who continued to impress as a sophomore. He showed the versatility to play both safety and nickel where he is very reliable in coverage. Davis does a great job of reading routes then breaking on the ball to make a play when the ball is thrown in his direction. He finished this past season with two interceptions and multiple pass breakups in 13 games. Davis also recorded 45 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and half a sack this season, and made huge impact on offense at receiver, catching 32 passes for 593 yards and six touchdowns. Andrew will be a player worth keeping an eye on over the next two years.

[player_tooltip player_id='953020' first='Neo' last='Davis-Jones'] jumped onto our radar with a very strong sophomore season. He lined up at safety where he was very impressive against the run. Davis-Jones does an outstanding job of reading the play quickly then coming downhill to fill the lane with a sense of urgency. Once he gets to the ball carrier, he is a very reliable tackler, finishing this season with 58 tackles and four tackles for loss in 14 games. He also impressed in coverage, coming away with one interception this year. Neo is a player who deserves some attention from college coaches this offseason.

To wrap up our top five defensive backs in the class of 2028 in the state of Kentucky, I have [player_tooltip player_id='1240383' first='Gavyn' last='Kinley']. Kinley lines up at safety where he is very dependable in pass coverage. He does a great job of reading routes and the quarterback then flowing through the secondary to put himself in a good position to make a play. When the ball is thrown in his direction, he does a great job of breaking with perfect timing to make a play on the ball, finishing this season with one interception and several pass deflections in 13 games . He has also shown the ability to come downhill in a hurry to make tackles against the run, finishing his sophomore year with 45 tackles. Kinley also scored one rushing touchdown this season. Gavyn should definitely be a player to keep an eye on as he continues to develop over the next two years.
