The Yutan Chieftains made a huge leap in 2025, improving their win total from 5 to 8 and reaching the state quarterfinals. One big part of this shift was the emergence of sophomore RB [player_tooltip player_id='2064220' first='Kaleb' last='Fenner'], who erupted for 1490 yards and 17 touchdowns on only 148 carries, averaging 10 yards per carry. Kaleb may not be the biggest back out there, but he is definitely one of the toughest, as he showed he can earn the tough yardage as he attacks the middle of the defense. He runs with a low center of gravity and a strong, wide base, making it very difficult for defenders to bring him down, whether they go high or low on the tackle. However, don't be fooled, as Fenner also has the explosiveness and elite burst that can spring him free for the homerun strike on any given play. He has an extra gear that I think catches defenses off guard and makes him extra dangerous when he sees the open field. Fenner also produced on the defensive side of the ball with 35 tackles, 3 TFLs, two interceptions, and a fumble recovery.

The Columbus Discoverers were another team that opened some eyes with a playoff appearance to go with a 6-4 record. Sophomore RB [player_tooltip player_id='1683777' first='Evvann' last='Daniels'] may not have been the feature back, but he gave us several glimpses of his potential star power. The sophomore back carried the ball 57 times for 499 yards and five touchdowns. Like Fenner, Daniels may get overlooked for being undersized, but his game can't be denied. Evvann also plays with a strong base, which helps him maintain his balance as he fights through tackle attempts. Daniels' biggest asset is his speed, which emerged as one of the fastest in the state during track season, and it translates to the field, as he can outrun defenses once he finds space. He is especially dangerous if he's able to win to the corner, where he can then fire off like a cannon for a big gain. This could be a big offseason for Evvann as he gears up to potentially take over RB1 duties next year.

Somewhat lost in the shuffle of what was a great Bennington offense is receiver [player_tooltip player_id='2064222' first='Lane' last='Molacek'], who carved out a nice role for himself in his sophomore campaign. The Badgers' receiver ended third on the team in receiving yardage with 28 receptions for 419 yards and three receiving touchdowns in his first season as a full-time varsity contributor. He projects well in the slot, where he can use his quick twitch to create separation from defenders. Molacek really opened my eyes when I attended their QF playoff game against Elkhorn North, as he proved to be a very reliable target who excels at exploiting the soft spots in the middle of the defense. He has strong hands and concentrates well through the catch process, even when bracing for contact from defenders. Lots of upside here!

I knew going into the season that the Wildcats should be solid along the defensive line, but the flashes sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='2064223' first='Easton' last='Loftin'] showed were unexpected. Easton played in only six games but still recorded 16 tackles, 7 TFLs, and four sacks. The biggest thing that stands out about Easton's game is his motor, which allows him to end up near the ball whenever he's on the field. Even though he gives up the size advantage going up against some upperclassmen on the OL, Easton makes up for it with his speed off the ball and his ability to use his length to get into the blocker's frame. When engaged with linemen, Easton uses violent hands to break off the block and is constantly driving his legs to keep from giving up ground. Even with solid production, I get the feeling that this was just a preview for Easton!
