Week 10 of the 2025 New Mexico High School football season is complete. Here is our tenth edition of the Weekly Whiparound, our comprehensive deep dive into everything that happened on the field. Enjoy!

Teams of the Week: Piedra Vista (6A), Capital (5A), Taos (4A), Thoreau (3A), Raton (2A).

Piedra Vista (4-5, 1-3) took a major step towards securing a Class 6A playoff berth with a 28-7 home win over Cibola. The Panthers led, 7-0, at halftime before scoring on a 43-yard TD pass on its first possession of the third quarter. A long kickoff return led to Cibola's lone TD of the night. Piedra Vista responded quickly with a 59-yard TD run and went on to the win.

Capital kept its playoff hopes alive with a stirring 23-21 come-from-behind victory over Highland Thursday night in Santa Fe. The Jaguars scored the winning TD with 17 seconds left. The Jaguars most likely need to beat Belen on the road in Week 11 to earn a spot in the playoffs since Highland is playing struggling Del Norte and Valley takes on Rio Grande next weekend.

Taos (5-4, 5-1) has quietly enjoyed a successful district season. The Tigers' 13-6 victory over Moriarty kept alive their hopes for a top four seed in the 4A playoffs. After Moriarty scored first early in the game, Taos rallied as Eli Lucero rushed 20 yards for a TD midway through the first quarter and QB [player_tooltip player_id='853710' first='Evan' last='Salazar'] scored the game-winner just before halftime on a 9-yard run. Neither team scored in the second half.

Thoreau (8-1, 5-0) took a big step towards the outright District 3A-1 title with a lopsided 48-0 victory over second-place Wingate. [player_tooltip player_id='1137891' first='Irvin' last='Tom'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1137848' first='Saige' last='Westmoreland'] had rushing TDs in the first quarter to give Thoreau an early 12-0 lead. QB [player_tooltip player_id='1613756' first='Aiden' last='Woody'] threw a 10-yard TD pass to [player_tooltip player_id='1137880' first='Noah' last='Trickey'] late in the 2nd quarter for a 20-0 halftime lead.

Raton (5-4, 3-1) moved into a tie for second place with arguably the biggest upset of Week 10, a 15-14 win over previously unbeaten Santa Rosa. Junior RB [player_tooltip player_id='1604784' first='Cael' last='Walton'] rushed for 207 yards on a workhorse 23 carries. Freshman QB Braylon Walton threw a TD pass for the Tigers.

Players of the Week: Jacob Garcia, Cleveland(6A); [player_tooltip player_id='1604951' first='Ace' last='Bachicha'], Capital (5A); Manual Chavarria, Bloomfield (4A); Tristan Garcia, Gallup (3A); [player_tooltip player_id='1606048' first='Xander' last='Chavez'], Legacy Academy (2A).

Cleveland LB Jacob Garcia had as good a two minute span as any player this season. He first scooped up a fumble on an errant lateral pass by Volcano Vista and returned it for a touchdown. Moments later, he intercepted a pass and returned it for a TD to spark Cleveland's third quarter surge against the Hawks.

Best Team Offensive Performance: Loving. The Falcons amassed 537 yards in total offense in a 52-27 victory over Jal. QB [player_tooltip player_id='1137875' first='Tristen' last='Onsurez'] accounted for 432 total yards and 5 TD.

Best Team Defensive Performance: Hope Christian. The Huskes traveled to West Las Vegas and blanked the Dons in front of their home crowd. In the second half alone, Hope Christian twice stopped WLV on downs and recovered a fumble.

Best Game: Navajo Prep 34, McCurdy 28. The score was tied 28-28 with less than 90 seconds left in the fourth quarter when Navajo Prep drove 50 yards in 8 plays for the game-winning TD on a 3-yard scoring pass from Kaleil Benally to [player_tooltip player_id='1137879' first='Khol' last='Johnson'] with just five seconds left on the clock.

Sophomore of the Week: [player_tooltip player_id='1613490' first='Evan' last='Nanez'], Cleveland. Nanez did it all for Cleveland in the Storm's 49-13 victory over Volcano Vista. Nanez returned a punt 85 yards for a TD, ran a fake punt for a key first down on Cleveland's momentum-seizing scoring drive to begin the third quarter and caught a TD pass in the fourth quarter.

Freshman of the Week: Aidan Ortiz, Lovington. Ortiz has seen only limited playing time for the Lovington varsity this season, but he jumped to the forefront in Week 10 by rushing for 129 yards and 2 TD on just 7 carries in the Wildcats' 46-12 win over Deming.

On the Doorstep: Eunice senior QB [player_tooltip player_id='854273' first='Elijah' last='Melancon'] is just 88 yards away from reaching the rarified air of 10,000 career passing yards. Melancon completed 15-of-23 passes for 273 yards and 3 TD in Eunice's 53-8 win over Tularosa in Week 10. He now has 9,912 career passing yards. Eunice (6-2, 2-1) hosts Jal in Week 11.

Winner Take All District Title Game: City of Vision crosstown rivals Cleveland and Rio Rancho square off Thursday night (6 p.m. kickoff) at RRHS in a true District 6A-1 winner-take all championship game. Both teams are 4-0 in the district after posting wins Friday night. The reward to the winner? A top four seed and first round bye in the 6A playoffs. How did we get here? Cleveland pulled away from Volcano Vista in the third quarter and beat the Hawks, 49-13, at Community Stadium. In the third quarter, the Storm took the opening kickoff and drove for a Sammy Bustillos rushing TD and then scored a pair of defensive touchdowns by junior LB Jacob Garcia on a scoop-and-score fumble and a Pick-6. Rio Rancho held off Farmington, 26-14, at Rams Stadium for the resurgent Rams' fourth straight victory. Some defensive personnel changes and adjustments have paid off for Rio Rancho. The Rams defense made a critical stop on fourth-and-goal in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. QB [player_tooltip player_id='1604705' first='Micah' last='Takahashi'] accounted for 3 TD, two passing and one rushing. The Rio Rancho offense didn't score in the second half but the defense came up with several stops to continually deny Farmington.

Where Every District Stands: Here's where every district in Classes 6A-2A stand in terms of the district title:

District 6A-1: As mentioned above, Cleveland and Rio Rancho square off Thursday night in a winner-take-all district championship game. The winner finishes 5-0 in the district.

District 6A-2: La Cueva (7-2, 6-0) controls its own destiny after Saturday's mercy-rule win over Santa Fe. If the Bears beat Albuquerque High in Week 11, they'll be outright champions with a unbeaten district record. Los Lunas (6-3, 5-1) must beat Sandia and hope for the Bulldogs to pull the upset in order to claim a share of the division crown.

District 6A-3: Las Cruces (9-0, 5-0) controls its own destiny and will secure the division title with a victory over rival Centennial (7-2, 4-1) in Week 11. However, if Centennial wins and Hobbs (7-2, 4-1) beats Carlsbad at home, we'll have a three-way tie with the Circle of Football in effect. If Hobbs loses to Carlsbad, the winner of the Las Cruces-Centennial battle will be the district champ, either outright (Las Cruces) or by tie-breaker (Centennial).

District 5A-1: Los Alamos (9-0, 6-0) clinched the division title on Saturday with the road win at Valley. Every other team in the district has at least two losses.

District 5A-2: By virtue of their win at Roswell in Week 9, Artesia (8-1, 6-0) controls its destiny. If the Bulldogs beat Mayfield in Week 11, they're outright district champs. Roswell (6-3, 5-1) is hoping for a Trojans upset and a win over crosstown rival Goddard to claim a share of the title, although Artesia owns the tiebreaker.

District 4A-1: Bloomfield (8-1, 6-0) controls its own destiny and can capture the outright division title with a victory over Grants in Week 11. Taos (5-4, 5-1) is the only team capable of catching Bloomfield. The Tigers must beat Bernalillo in Week 11 and hope Grants pulls the road upset.

District 4A-2: St. Pius X (7-1, 4-1) is the only team with one district loss and the Sartans control their own destiny. They will capture the district title with a victory over Manzano in Week 11. Chaparral (6-3, 3-2) and Albuquerque Academy (5-4, 3-2) are the only district teams with two losses. Both teams must win their Week 11 games (Portales at Chaparral; Albuquerque Academy at Valencia) and hope Manzano upsets St. Pius X in order to claim a share of the district crown.

District 3A-1: Thoreau (8-1, 5-0) controls their own destiny after the lopsided win over Wingate (7-3, 5-1). Thoreau will claim the outright title if they beat Crownpoint in Week 11.

District 3A-2: St. Michael's (9-0, 3-0), which has won 29 straight games, clinched the district title with Saturday's mercy-rule in over Pojoaque Valley. Every other team has at least two district losses. The Horsemen host rival Robertson in Week 11 knowing they'll be the No. 1 playoff seed in Class 3A with a win.

District 3A-3: Dexter (7-1, 5-0) clinched the district title with a 41-14 victory over Hot Springs in Week 10. Every other team has at least two district losses. Dexter hosts Socorro in Week 11. Barring a massive upset, Dexter should be the No. 2 seed for the 3A playoffs.

District 2A-1: Hozho Academy (7-2, 4-0) has clinched at least a share of the title, and since they beat Navajo Prep, 9-8, a couple of weeks ago, the Wolves own the tiebreaker. If Hozho Academy beats McCurdy Saturday in Week 11, they'll be outright district champions.

District 2A-2: Legacy Academy (8-1, 4-0) has sole possession of 1st place with Raton (5-4, 3-1) and Santa Rosa (8-1, 3-1) one game behind. Legacy Academy will win the district title outright with a win over Santa Rosa Thursday night. But if Santa Rosa wins and Raton beats Estancia, we'll have a three-way tie for first place.

District 2A-3: Defending 2A champion Texico (6-3, 3-0) has sole possession of first place and can win the outright district title with a victory over Tularosa in Week 11. Texico will be heavy favorites in that game. Eunice (6-2, 2-1) is in second place and has to hope Tularosa upsets Texico and the Cardinals beat Jal to claim a share of the district title.

Class 6A Roundup: Las Cruces kept its dreams of an unbeaten regular season alive with a convincing 53-28 victory at Carlsbad. Cavemen RB [player_tooltip player_id='1605005' first='Brock' last='Wright'] rushed for 151 yards and 2 TD on 12 carries. . .Hobbs (7-2, 4-1) trounced Organ Mountain, 51-12, to remain one game behind Las Cruces in the district standings. Hobbs led, 13-0, after the first quarter and pulled away in the second quarter on RB [player_tooltip player_id='1604984' first='Shamus' last='Wright']'s 30-yard rushing TD, a 38-yard FG by Braddock Beaty and [player_tooltip player_id='1599800' first='Justice' last='French']'s 70-yard kickoff return to take a 30-6 halftime lead. . .Centennial (7-2, 4-1) still has an opportunity to finish atop the District 6A-3 standings after beating Clovis, 48-26, setting up a huge matchup against unbeaten Las Cruces Friday night at Field of Dreams. QB [player_tooltip player_id='1604943' first='Ruiz' last='Laborin'] completed 17-of-21 passes for 244 yards and 1 TD, while sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1684504' first='Jesus' last='Sanchez'] did it again by rushing for 209 yards and 5 TD against the Wildcats. . .Eldorado (4-5, 3-3) kept its playoff hopes alive with a 31-18 victory over West Mesa. The Eagles must beat Atrisco Heritage in Week 11 and hope both Sandia and Albuquerque High lose their games to have any chance of sneaking into the playoffs. District 6A-2 will likely get no more than 3 teams into the playoffs, possibly only two (La Cueva, Los Lunas). . .Sandia (4-5, 4-2) kept its playoff hopes alive and likely eliminated Albuquerque High (5-4, 3-3) from postseason consideration with a 38-14 victory over the Bulldogs. Sandia has a must-win Week 11 game against Los Lunas at Wilson Stadium Saturday at 11 a.m. . .Los Lunas (6-3, 5-1) retained sole possession of second place in District 6A-2 with a 55-14 win over Atrisco Heritage. Junior QB [player_tooltip player_id='1787301' first='Luke' last='Cieremans'] completed 17-of-26 passes for 258 yards and 4 TD while rushing for 74 yards. Los Lunas built a comfortable 41-7 lead by the midway point of the third quarter and cruised home from there. . .La Cueva (7-2, 6-0) mercy ruled Santa Fe (4-5, 2-4), 55-0, a loss that likely eliminated the Demons from playoff consideration.
