CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Prep Redzone No. 13 Cedar Rapids Prairie played host to eighth-ranked Iowa City West Friday night here at John Wall Stadium. The Prairie Hawks pulled off the upset, 45-31, a key victory in their pursuit of the postseason.

It was good getting a look at Prairie for the first time this season after having it ranked 10th in our preseason 5A Super 16 Rankings. The Prairie Hawks were breaking in a new starting quarterback as well as important players in other positions against a difficult schedule earlier this season, but they might just be rounding into form with one week remaining in the regular season. They could be a tough out in the playoffs.

Fason is a freak, in the nicest sense of the word. If he were 6-5 instead of 6-2, Power 4s would be lining up with scholarship offers. As it is, the University of Iowa is getting a steal with this kid accepting a preferred walk-on opportunity. Fason jumped out at me last season when scouting Prairie's game against four-time defending 5A champion Southeast Polk. He terrorized the Rams at defensive end and tight end. When I watched him in-person again against Iowa City West on Oct. 18, 2025, he still was disrupting the offense from is D-Line spot, but now Fason was running the wildcat and barreling over people with the ball in his hands. He's an explosive athlete that embraces the game's physicality. I'm not sure where he'll end playing on the next level, but he has the tools and makeup to be successful wherever that ends up being.

When I pulled up at John Wall Stadium on Oct. 17, 2025, Kongshaug was one of the players I was most looking forward to evaluating. The junior was completing almost 70 percent of his passes in his first season starting for the Prairie Hawk varsity. I'd scouted Kongshaug back in the spring at the Back2Ballin seven-on-seven tournament in Cedar Falls. He impressed me with his arm strength and ability to move at his size. Those assets shined through again during the most recent scout. He prefers slinging it from the pocket, but he can keep plays alive with his legs and get yards if the field opens up. Kongshaug reads defenses well and works through his progressions in a timely manner. He's still figuring out windows he can get the ball through and will do so as his game matures. Again, the arm strength is there. Now, it's about reps and development.

I liked what I saw from Donald when scouting him against Southeast Polk early in the 2024 season. He'd shown a lot of progress when I pulled up to see the Prairie Hawks face Iowa City West on Oct. 17, 2025 in Cedar Rapids. Gone were some of the rough edges often associated with a sophomore. Donald has a better understanding of what defenses are running at him when he lines up at left tackle. He hands guys off when he needs to and takes care of the edge. A very large human, Donald slides his feet smoothly and quikcly gets set up in pass protection. He also understands the importance of operating with low pads in the running game. Donald could keep developing into a left tackle for the next level, but his agility and power would play at right tackle or inside, too.

Kahl was a problem for defenses when I saw him playing for Iowa City High as a sophomore in 2024. That was the case again during an in-person scout when his new team, Prairie, faced Iowa City West on Oct. 17, 2025. He rushed for more than 150 yards and ripped off a long touchdown run late that keyed an upset victory. Kahl is a bigger back that relies on power over finesse. He's tough to arm-tackle, and it often takes multiple defenders to bring him to the ground. It's best to do that early because he's a load when he gets a head of steam and there's deceptive speed in the open field. Colleges are recruiting him as a running back but also see a skill set that would work at linebacker.

I did not get a chance to scout Clausen live when he played for Benton last season but appreciated what he put on film. Those skills and more showed up when I scouted him during a game against Iowa City West on Oct. 17, 2025. The junior was operating as the Prairie Hawk right tackle and held up well facing an aggressive Trojan defense. His athleticism and agility at his size leads to current success and there's potential for much more. His frame can comfortably add mass and strength without the loss of the natural gifts that already make him special. Clausen plays with a good pad level and drives well with his legs in run blocking. He sets up quickly with balance in pass-pro. His footwork is sound.

Patterson is a good athlete with an ideal frame that gives him position flexibility, now and in the future. That was apparent during a live scouting opportunity when the Prairie Hawks played host to Iowa City West on Oct. 17, 2025. Patterson matched up well with a Trojan team featuring student-athletes with his explosive athleticism. His height and long arms lead to him being a disruptive force on the defense. It resulted in 22 solo tackles and 4.5 stops for loss during Prairie's first seven games. He also intercepted a pass and was credited with a pass-defended. Patterson had one catch on the season, and it went for a 73-yard gain, illustrating his unusual speed for his size. On top of that, it's a frame capable of adding good weight without losing his best traits. Patterson could benefit from attending college team camps and scouting combines this spring and summer.
