The Class 4A conference in Iowa continues to get more intriguing as we are left with now 3 undefeated teams heading into week 6 in this conference. The margin for error in this conference is thin, and the standings up at the top of the conference are compacted with many teams still very much in contention heading into the final 3 weeks of the regular season. We recap what went down last weekend in week 5 across Class 4A Iowa!

In a historic rivalry where Lewis Central has dominated over the Glenwood, the Titans exploded to a 24-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, with the game seemingly out of hand from the get-go for the Rams. However, they made a furious rally, and by the end of the half, they cut the deficit to 31-26. In the second half, the Rams got the upper hand, disrupting the Titans' passing game by forcing 2 turnovers, while the Rams finished with a dominant 449 yards of total offense. The Rams took the lead for the final time with just under 9 minutes to go, and the Titans were ultimately unable to respond as the Rams ran out the clock. The win snapped a 8-game losing streak to Lewis Central dating back to 2013 as they continue their hot run in 2025.

A matchup between two lower-ranked teams in the conference proved to be one of the most compelling and thrilling finishes in the state this week. The Riverhawks were able to dominate the passing game with 279 yards and 3 TDs on the air as they built a 28-18 lead with just 3 minutes to go. A 92 yard touchdown pass cut the deficit to 3 with just over 2 and a half minutes to go, followed by a 3-and-out for Mason City combined with a botched punt which gave the Go-Hawks the ball at the Riverhawks' 34 yard line. The Go-Hawks tied the game with a field goal with only 12 seconds to go. However, in stunning fashion, the Riverhawks fumbled the kickoff return, giving the Go-Hawks the ball at their 12 yard line, setting up the game-winning 29 yard field goal as time expired. The Go-Hawks scored 13 unanswered points on 3 drives in the last 3 minutes as they pulled off a seemingly impossible comeback.

Top Performer: [player_tooltip player_id='1751494' first='Gavin' last='Bockholt'] (JR) - The first time this award has been giving to a placekicker this season, Bockholt's clutch performance proved critical toward the Go-Hawks improbable comeback, connecting on all 3 field goal attempts and both of his extra points. He averaged 38.5 yards per kick on 2 punts, converted a 2PT conversion, and forced the late kick return that led to the critical turnover that set up his winning kick at the end of the game.

Another engaging matchup between two lower-ranked units in Class 4A, this matchup proved to be a back-and-forth showdown. The two offenses combined for an impressive 760 total yards as they were picking each other apart. Ultimately, it was Grinnell, who showed more coordination and precision with their performance as they carefully built a 28-17 lead with 5 and a half minutes remaining. The Tigers responded immediately with a touchdown one minute later before making a critical goal-line stand, getting the ball back at their own 3 yard line with just under 2 minutes to go. Their last drive ultimately went nowhere as they quickly turned the ball over on downs, allowing Grinnell to run out the clock, giving Grinnell some momentum heading into the second half of the season.

Fort Dodge had a big test on Friday night taking on a top contender in Sergeant Bluff-Luton. While there was hope that it would be a back-and-forth affair, the Warriors would take control quickly, after taking a 3-0 lead in the 1st quarter, the Warriors scored 28 over the next 2 quarters to put the game away. Fort Dodge's potent run-game was limited to just 83 rushing yards and 3.1 YPC while the Warriors rumbled for 271 yards on the ground as they put themselves back up toward the top of the conference rankings.
