This season, we have started a new idea at Prep Redzone called “Power Scores”. “Power Scores” are computer-generated team rankings (not scout-based) that take into account various factors which can be found here. With that being said, I wanted to take a look at where our “Power Scores” stand in the state Kentucky heading into Week 9 in each class and focus on an impact player on each time in the Top 10. After already covering 5A & 6A, here are some impact players for the Top 10 teams in 4A in our Week 9 “Power Scores”.

1. Franklin County:

Sophomore quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1056924' first='Knox' last='Barrett'] has led Franklin County to an undefeated start to the 2025 season. Through eight games, Barrett has completed 137/195 passes for 1,934 yards, 23 touchdowns, and two interceptions. Barrett is an accurate passer, showing the ability to put the ball in a spot where only his intended receiver can catch it. He has also shown a great feel for pressure, showing the ability to escape the pocket when needed while keeping his eyes down the field to make throws on the run. Barrett should definitely be a quarterback for college coaches to have on their radar over the next few years.

2. Taylor County:

The Cardinals are another 4A team off to an undefeated start to their season. Senior right tackle [player_tooltip player_id='1584288' first='Bryten' last='Close'] has been a driving force for their run-heavy offense this season. He plays with a ton of physicality, using his powerful initial punch to knock defenders off their feet with ease. Close also moves very well, showing the ability to pull from the tackle spot and get up to the second level in a hurry to pick up blocks in the open field. Bryten is committed to Louisville where I can see him becoming a key piece of their offensive line unit once he gets there as he has shown the versatility to play both tackle spots.

3. Johnson Central

Johnson Central has gotten off to an impressive 8-0 start to their season, led by junior [player_tooltip player_id='1200690' first='Braxton' last='Perry']. Braxton currently leads the team in rushing with 95 carries for 886 yards and 10 touchdowns in eight games. Perry is a strong runner, showing the ability to keep his legs churning through contact while maintaining his balance to break tackles with ease without losing stride. He has also shown the speed to break away on long runs. Braxton has also returned a punt for a touchdown this season and has made an impact on defense, recording 25 tackles, four tackles for loss, and three fumble recoveries (one returned for a touchdown) so far. Perry should be a player to keep a close eye on over the next couple seasons.

4. Logan County:

The Cougars are off to a strong start to their season, led by impressive play from their defense. A player that has stood out as one of the leaders on that side of the ball is junior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1954897' first='Carson' last='Carlock']. Carson lines up at inside linebacker where he is very impressive against the run. He reads his keys quickly then uses his speed to flow downhill in a hurry to get to the ball carrier. Once he gets to the ball carrier, he is a very reliable tackler, leading his team with 56 tackles and 13.5 tackles for loss in seven games. He has also shown the ability to make plays against the pass, both as a pass rusher and in coverage, recording a team-high 6.5 sacks and two interceptions (tied for team lead) so far this season. Carson will be a player worth keeping an eye on as he continues to develop over the next couple years.

5. Lincoln County:

Lincoln County has been one of the pleasant surprises of the 2025 season as they are off to a 6-1 start. One of the key factors in their success has been the play of senior [player_tooltip player_id='1954901' first='Reed' last='Curlis']. On offense, Curlis has been very impressive out of the backfield, leading his team in rushing with 120 carries for 638 yards and seven touchdowns in seven games. He is very dangerous in the open field, showing the speed to break away on long runs and elusiveness to make defenders miss. Curlis has also caught five passes for 98 yards this season. He has also made a huge impact on defense at linebacker, leading the team with 69 tackles along with one tackle for loss and a sack. Reed is a player who should be on the radar of college coaches this season.

6. Highlands:

Highlands has continued to be one of the more impressive teams in the state this season. One of the players leading the charge in their strong start has been junior [player_tooltip player_id='1200564' first='Tayden' last='Lorenzen']. Lorenzen does a little bit of everything on offense but has made his biggest impact as a ball carrier. He currently leads Highlands in rushing with 91 carries for 331 yards and 13 touchdowns in eight games. Lorenzen is a very reliable red zone/short-yardage back as he uses his strength to lower his shoulder and run straight through defenders without losing his balance. Tayden has also shown the ability to line up in the slot and play a key role in the passing game. He has caught 17 touchdowns for 180 yards and two touchdowns so far this season. Lorenzen currently holds an offer from Miami (OH) and I expect more to come his way over the next two seasons.

7. Covington Catholic:

The Colonels are another team from the Northern Kentucky region who have impressed this season, led by strong play from their senior quarterback, [player_tooltip player_id='1584313' first='Cash' last='Harney']. Through eight games, Harney has completed 83/129 passes for 1,316 yards, 10 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He has the arm strength to stretch the field in the deep passing game and accuracy to fit passes into spots where only his intended receivers can catch them. Cash is also very dangerous as a ball carrier on designed quarterback run plays, using his speed to run away from the defense with ease on long runs. He currently leads his team in rushing with 99 carries for 741 yards and eight touchdowns. Harney currently holds an offer from Thomas More and I expect more to come his way this season as he definitely has the talent to play at the next level.

8. Paducah Tilghman:

Paducah Tilghman has continued to have one of the most explosive offenses in the entire state this season, led by senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1697795' first='Stone' last='Crowe']. Crowe currently leads the state in passing, completing 137/221 passes for 2,062 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in seven games. Stone puts a nice amount of touch on his passes, putting the ball in a place away from the opposing defensive back where only his intended receiver can catch it. He has also shown the arm strength to lead his receivers down the field in the deep passing game. Crowe has also shown the ability to make plays with his legs when needed, running the ball 37 times for 118 yards and five touchdowns so far this season. Stone currently holds an offer from Greenville and I wouldn't be surprised to see more come his way soon.

9. North Oldham:

North Oldham is another team who has been led by a high-powered offense this season. A major factor in their offensive success has been the play of senior wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='283976' first='Luke' last='Tompkins']. Through eight games, he leads his team in receiving with 45 catches for 735 yards and 15 touchdowns. Tompkins has explosive speed which he uses to blow by opposing defensive backs with ease to create separation. He is also impressive after the catch, using his speed and elusiveness in the open field to turn short passes into big gains. Tompkins has also played a key role on defense this season, accounting for 26 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and a team-leading five interceptions (one returned for a touchdown). Luke currently holds offers from Morehead State, Mount Saint Joseph, and Georgetown (KY), and I expect that list to continue to grow this season.

10. Franklin-Simpson:

To wrap up the Top 10 teams in our Week 9 4A “Power Score” rankings in the state of Kentucky, I have the Franklin-Simpson Wildcats. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1923320' first='Blake' last='McPherson'] has played a key role on both sides of the ball in the Wildcats' strong start to the 2025 season. On offense, McPherson has been very impressive out of the backfield, running the ball 79 times for 709 yards and 10 touchdowns in seven games. He has the burst of speed to get through the running lane with a sense of urgency then run away from the defense and also has shown the contact balance to break tackles with ease. McPherson has also caught one touchdown pass this season. On the defensive side of the ball, Blake lines up at safety where he does a great job of reading routes then breaking on the ball with perfect timing to make a play when it is thrown his way. McPherson leads the Wildcats with four interceptions and has also recorded 32 tackles this season. Blake doesn't currently hold any offers but he is a player who definitely deserves some attention from college coaches.
