Ryan Kelsey has had a productive season for Johnson Central in 2026. Across 43 total tackles (28 solo), his stats also include two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, and two interceptions. Kelsey was on my radar before the season and has since proved himself further as a sure tackler and a great read-and-react defender as the last line of defense. He also plays a multi-purpose role on offense, where he can line up in the backfield or out wide, so Kelsey is on the field for almost the entire game most Fridays.

[player_tooltip player_id='1651416' first='Saurin' last='DeShields'] is a second-year starter for Madison Southern. After a successful freshman season that included an interception return for a touchdown, DeShields is holding up just as well during his sophomore season. He also plays running back, where he most recently scored the game-winning touchdown for Madison Southern in the closing moments of their win vs. Dunbar last week. However, his defensive performance during the win was arguably more impressive. He led the way with 14 tackles and a pivotal interception as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='2116480' first='Aiden' last='Pentecost'] is a reliable, high-effort defensive back from Bullitt East High School. He's a pest in man coverage and, despite his size (now 5'7" and 150), has demonstrated that he can break up a pass over much taller receivers. His awareness is arguably the most impressive part of his game, and he can sit back, read the quarterback's eyes, and make a play on the ball. Pentecost is also incredibly physical and a hard-hitter. He often initiates contact hard and fast, which works well when he's playing downhill.

[player_tooltip player_id='2244732' first='Dayton' last='Spaulding'] has not allowed a pass so far this season. The sophomore DB has recorded 3 pass breakups, two interceptions, one pass deflection, and a blocked punt. He only has two tackles this season, but that's because he's often making a play on the ball as a safety in coverage rather than specifically playing downhill. However, Spaulding shows great speed and agility, as well as effort, by being able to chase down ball carriers across the field and help his team make a tackle. Spaulding can also play up and sell the blitz well before making the transition to coverage in the secondary.

[player_tooltip player_id='1663960' first='Zaid' last='Charasika'] is a physical, hard-hitting defensive back for St. Xavier in Louisville. Charasika plays well downhill and in blitz packages to help stop the run. He's quick to react to what the offense gives him. Charasika is arguably at his best defending in man coverage, where he can stay stride-for-stride with his receivers while still reading the quarterback to try to make a play. Charasika has the athleticism and motor to chase down ball carriers on the other side of the field. His high-effort style of play bodes well when playing in big-time matchups, as he did against Trinity last week.
