We are now off and running in the 2025 high school football season here in the Sunshine State, and as you will notice each and every week, there are going to be games that will be very interesting.

The landscape of football in the Sunshine State has changed and no longer can you play an average schedule and qualify for the state playoffs or even greater, get national attention.

Over the first few weeks, we will not only see our state teams clash against each other, but plenty of matchups with out of state powers will also take place – like the first week when we will be in the national spotlight.

If you have followed us over the past few years, you know that each and every Friday during the high school football season, we shine the spotlight on 10 games to keep an eye on.

We are NOT predictors of games. We just shine the spotlight on the matchups that we feel will be competitive. There are NO guarantees that the games we choose will be close, but for the most part, they are all contests that fans want to see.

Here are the second week's games that could be interesting:

Cherry Creek, Colorado (1-0) vs. No. 15 Sarasota Cardinal Mooney (Austin-Tindall Sports Complex, Kissimmee). Two teams who won on opening night will clash on a neutral field in the Orlando area. Both of these programs will be in the hunt for state titles in their respective states and will clash in one of the best matchups in Week 2. The Bruins were 13-1 a year ago.

Community School of Naples (1-0) at Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy (1-0). Here is a very interesting contest between two programs who are looking for statewide validation, and this game could be just the contest that will be needed. The Mavericks knocked off Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons last week – while the Seahawks shut down Oasis.

Daytona Beach Mainland (0-0) at No. 11 Cocoa. The three-time defending state champions will look to shake off last week's tough start against Merritt Island, which took the Tigers into overtime. Even though they won, it is this game that will figure to be just as tough as the Bucs look to get the season off on a winning note with a solid team.

No. 21 Lake Mary (1-0) at Kissimmee Osceola (1-0). The defending 7A state runner up Rams will be on the road after pulling out a come-from-behind win at home against Miami Norland. They are loaded again, but will be up against it with last year's 6A state runner up Kowboys who shut out Treasure Coast on opening night. This is a tremendous central Florida matchup.

No. 12 Lakeland (1-0) at Concord De La Salle, California (0-0). It's a trip to California for the 5A state runner up Dreadnaughts who opened the season with a win over Auburndale. The Spartans open their season after a 12-1 record a year ago. Will the long flight be too much for Lakeland – or will they move to 2-0 and show the nation that they are indeed ready to play the best? We will see Friday night!

No. 13 Miami Christopher Columbus (0-0) at Olney Our Lady of Good Counsel, Maryland (0-0). After battling rival Miami Southridge to no result last week during a weather-plagued opener over three days, the Explorers hit the road to Maryland and will have a chance to get back at the Falcons who came away with a 14-10 win a year ago in Miami during a 7-5 season. There is a feeling that Columbus is a lot better than the “experts” predicted and will be a tough road opponent.

Panama City Bay (1-0) at Lynn Haven Mosley (1-0). This is one of those “neighborhood” matchups between two schools that won on opening night. The Dolphins believe they have the kind of team that can make some serious noise this season after a 9-2 season and a district title in 2024. While the Tornadoes were 5-6 a year ago, they also believe that they are much improved after a convincing opening night win. Does Bay avenge last year's thumping or does Mosley show that they are a state power?

Tavares (1-0) at Groveland South Lake (1-0). This is one of those games that many are passing over as just another game, but to be honest, both are much improved and are serious about the post season. The Bulldogs are coming off a convincing 53-0 win over Citrus in the season opener – while the Eagles, district champs a year ago, started out with a win over Nature Coast.

No. 18 Venice (0-1) at No. 5 Miami Northwestern. It was a game that certainly caught the attention of the entire state. Two-time defending state runners up Venice at home against a Miami Northwestern program that was coached by Teddy Bridgewater and looking to jump back into the elite teams in the state. The contest produced 1,000 yards, 90 points and overtime before the Indians pulled out a thrilling 48-42 win. Can we have a repeat in Miami?

No. 26 Vero Beach (1-0) at Gainesville Buchholz (1-0). This is indeed a game that the winner will emerge with some credibility as both programs won on opening night, but still believe that they have something to prove. The Indians and Bobcats have never gotten over the hump, but both are talented and feel that this could be the year. Winner will be Top 30. Loser will have to climb their way back!
