The top returning tackler in 1A, Gabe King of East Sac County posted 93 total tackles in 2024. Leading his team by nearly 20 tackles, King served as the anchor of the Raiders defense last fall. With nine tackles-for-loss (TFLs), King was a constant threat to get in the backfield and disrupt the flow of opposing offenses.

One of the bigger bodies on the field at virtually all times, 6'4" and 205-pound Carson Mueggenberg stands out on film for Ogden. Not just because of his physical presence, but because the senior stopped opposing ball-carriers in their tracks with his ability to square up, stand pat and make a textbook tackle.

Not the most fluid athlete on the field, Mueggenberg remained in constant pursuit of the ball with a high-octane motor, resulting in 88.5 tackles last fall, 80 of which were solo.

Despite standing at 5'9" and 140-pounds, Zach Luedtke is a menace to deal with for opposing offenses. A small linebacker that can fly off the edge and disrupt the passing game, Luedtke isn't afraid to mix it up in the middle of the defense. Heotaled 88.5 tackles last fall, adding three TFLs that included two sacks.

Coming in at number four on the list is Cooper Franklin of Alburnett, who finished with 82 tackles last fall. The main player opposing offenses had to account for on the Pirate defense, Franklin out-paced Alburnett's second-leading tackles by 30 tackles, and their third-leading tackler by more than 50 tackles.

With similar outlandish production to King, Franklin also served as anchor of his team's defense last season. With he and the 1A rushing leader Laken Cave back next season, Alburnett may be a team to be reckoned with in their class.

One of just two seniors on this list is [player_tooltip player_id='1248124' first='Lane' last='Mitchell'], who also plays baseball and wrestles for Lawton-Brownson in northwest Iowa. Despite more contribution from his teammates on the defensive side of the ball for the Eagles, Mitchell was also the leader in tackles far and away for LB. He finished with 75.5 total tackles last fall, with two, now-graduated teammates finishing with roughly 50. He was a major asset in the run-game, as Mitchell often found ways to plug gaps in the opposing offensive line to stop ball-carriers in their tracks.
