On Saturday, May 3 I was fortunate enough to be invited to cover You Are Athlete's New Jersey Regional Exposure Camp. This event had a double session that features middle schoolers first and high schoolers second. As is customary whenever I attend an event, the first thing I take note of are the prospects that have the clear, physical measurables to immediately compete at the next, immediate level of play – also known as the eye test.

Our running back coverage of this event concludes with two prospects from Maryland, one from New York, and one from New Jersey... Starting with the hometown prospect, [player_tooltip player_id='1353083' first='Kole' last='Perrine'] is a prospect that I had somewhat mixed remarks about. A 2028 graduate, Perrine was a bit too deliberate with his cuts during agility drills; however, when he had the ball in his hands things seemed to change. When this freshman toted the rock, I thought that he moved way better than he did without it. Not sure what to make of this, but it is what it is... If there was one prospect with the hardest of jump cuts, it was Jovan Bennett. Bennett, who is a rising junior from New York, totally broke defenders down as if he was working an Allen Iverson cross over as he strutted past them and all the aftermath of wreckage he left behind.

The first of the two prospects from the Old State Line was [player_tooltip player_id='1669414' first='Jaylon' last='Pitts'], who graduates in 2026. Pitts certainly looks the part to be a varsity running back. He might be more of a power back, however, as I thought he had room to improve his quickness. If you have ready any of my work at this point, you know I must call this out whenever I see it: 7on7 culture! Pitts ran with the ball very low and loose, rather than high and tight; moreover, in the open field when he tried to bust a move, that low, loose ball swam over top of a defender's helmet. When will this toxic 7on7 culture stop?... Closing out on a high note is a two-time camp MVP in [player_tooltip player_id='965138' first='Nasir' last='Johnson']. Johnson managed to clean up this weekend, winning best running back at this You Are Athlete camp on Saturday and doubled-down at the Prep Rezone Combine on Sunday - where we crossed paths again. Needless to say, Johnson won multiple MVPs for very good reason. I noticed a forward lean in Johnson when he ran the rock. This was paired with what appeared to be outstanding ball security as he pinned the ball high and tight - chinning it as contact threatened, too. The more and more I watched him, I thought that the 2026 graduate moved better and better. Not lost upon this, though, was his tendency to run hard each and every time out. This was shown during cat & mouse drills where he read over pursuing defenders, exploiting their aggression against themselves. There were also flashes when the current junior was able to win in space. As a receiver out of the backfield, Johnson extended his hands for the catch and also had a burst in space on bubble/flat-type routes.
