The 2024 Woodland Cougars were one of the most dominant teams in Oklahoma, regardless of class. At this time last year, we had Woodland on top of the brand new Class A-2 rankings and talked about the expectations of a program that looked to be knocking on the door of a championship season. The Cougars brought back almost all of their starters from a semifinal team in 2023 and they looked like it as they kicked off the 2024 season. Woodland would beat Pawnee, Morrison and Pawhuska during their non-district slate, winning every game by at least 30 points. That dominance only continued once they would enter the district slate. They had a week six showdown at home against rival Hominy but the Cougars would still dominate their way to a 34-14 victory. And as it turns out, that 20-point win would actually be their closest game in 2024. They would roll their way to the district championship and closed out the regular season with a 10-0 record. They beat Gore and Konawa with ease in the first two rounds. They knocked off Regent Prep in the semifinals and then beat Talihina by 35 points in the state championship game. Woodland captured their second state championship in school history and the first since 2010. The Cougars had plenty of postseason accolades, including their star quarterback being named a PRZ-Oklahoma Player Of The Year finalist. It was a memorable season from start to finish and when you look at the various state champions from 2024, there is no doubt that Woodland is near the top of the list in terms of the most dominant teams.

2025 OUTLOOK

After a memorable 2024 season where they were about as perfect as it could be, what does Woodland do for an encore? That's one of the biggest questions as we go into the 2025 football season. And for Woodland, they will be facing some new challenges going into this season. Only four starters are back on the offensive side of the ball for a unit that averaged over 50 points per game. They do have some skill players returning, which will certainly help in the playmaking department. But they also have to replace the majority of their offensive line and their star quarterback, who was a two-year starter for the Cougars and last year, was one of the best players in the state. So needless to say, they will have some hurdles on the offensive side of the ball. Defensively, they also bring back four starters on that side of the ball. The players they have returning on offense will also turn around and play various roles for the defense. All in all, the Cougars are going to need some new faces to step up in a major way as they look to defend their state championship. The Woodland coaches are excited about the potential of those young players that have been waiting their turns. But right now, it's all about potential. They have to go out and do it on the field. The non-district schedule will challenge Woodland and those new faces will have to grow up in a hurry. But when it comes to the district, the Cougars should contend once again and like last season, it could come down to that week six match-up with Hominy. These two have been battling for district supremacy over the last few years and we don't anticipate it changing this year. But the Cougars will definitely be challenged more in 2025 but they expect to defend that state championship and respond with all eyes on them.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1169617' first='Goob' last='Kennedy'] returns for another season of starting on both sides of the ball. He's the rare combination of offensive tackle and linebacker but you tend to see that with some of the smaller schools in the state. Last season on defense, Kennedy was one of the team's leaders in the tackle department. He finished the year with 100 tackles and 28 tackles for loss. But when you look at the impact he'll have this season, you could certainly make the argument that it will come on offense. Kennedy and the rest of this Woodland offensive line will be protecting a first-year starter at the quarterback position. So he's a very valuable two-way player for the Cougars.

Woodland senior [player_tooltip player_id='1626571' first='Jaston' last='Terry'] was one of the more underrated playmakers in the state last season. Just look at the numbers that Terry produced and you'll see what we're talking about. Terry would finish with 45 catches for nearly 1,100 yards and 16 touchdowns. He wasn't done there. He also had nearly 70 carries for over 700 yards and nine touchdowns. Now, it seems crazy to think but Terry has the potential to actually outdo those numbers this season. Because almost every game that Woodland played was over by halftime. Terry could end up playing more snaps and because of that, could end up with significantly better numbers this year. He'll be one of the top players to watch in Class A-2.

Senior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1528947' first='Khamdyn' last='Patterson'] enjoyed a monster season last year for the Woodland defense. Patterson was somewhat flying under the radar around this time last year but that didn't last long. He emerged as one of the top tacklers on the Woodland defense. He finished his junior season with nearly 150 tackles with 32 of those tackles coming behind the line of scrimmage. Simply put, he had a nose for the football and was consistently causing chaos in opposing backfields. While the Cougars are working in some of the new faces on the defensive side of the ball, we expect Patterson to be a name to know and he could see that production go up in 2025.

Senior wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1663602' first='Lucky' last='Heath'] will be joining Terry as one of the top weapons on the offensive side of the ball this season for Woodland. Heath enjoyed a breakout season last fall for the Cougars and was incredibly productive in some of the biggest games of the year. Heath would finish the year with nearly 30 catches for well over 400 yards and seven touchdowns. But just like with Terry, there were a lot of games in 2024 where Heath was done by halftime or even earlier. So when the Cougars come out this season, we expect Heath to be a bigger part of the Cougar offense. He's a very underrated athlete and that was obvious when he camped with us back in May.

All eyes will be on sophomore quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1702627' first='Peyton' last='Snow'] when he takes the field for the Cougars this season. As we mentioned earlier in the preview, Woodland had one of the best quarterbacks in the state last season so those are not easy shoes to fill for anybody. But Woodland's coaches are very confident that Snow is going to be the guy to get the job done this season. He's a tough-minded but cerebral leader of the offense so far this offseason and when you look at the talent they have returning on offense, that certainly helps. Whoever was going to step into this role will immediately benefit from having receivers like Heath and Terry returning.

Sept. 5th - Pawnee
- For the second straight year, the regular season will open up with a match-up against Pawnee. Last season, the Cougars would beat the Black Bears by 30 points. This season, they look to dominate once again and kick off their season with a bang. They've won four straight in this series.
Sept. 12th - AT Morrison
- Woodland hits the road for the first time in 2025 to face Morrison. The Cougars beat up Morrison 50-20 last season. After they were district opponents from 2018-2023, they became non-district opponents last season. Woodland has won four of the last five in the series.
Sept. 19th - AT Pawhuska
- Non-district play will wrap up in week three, on the road, against Pawhuska. Both of these teams expect to contend for the state title in their respective class so we could see some fireworks in this one. Woodland rolled to a 46-6 victory last season but Pawhuska brings almost everyone back.
Sept. 26th - AT Porter
- District play will open up for the Cougars in week four, on the road, against Porter. Last season, Woodland would beat Porter 65-12, on their way to a dominant district championship run. Last season's meeting was the first between these two teams since they were district foes in 2016 and 2017.
Oct. 3rd - Barnsdall
- After three straight road games, Woodland will finally return home in week five for a district clash with Barnsdall. Last season, the Cougars would run away with a 62-15 victory. This was the first meeting between these two teams since 2019. They were district opponents from 2016-2019.
Oct. 10th - AT Hominy
- The second half of the regular season slate kicks off with arguably the biggest game as Woodland travels to Hominy in week six. These two have been district foes since 2016 and it's been a tight series. The Bucks have a 5-4 advantage while Woodland won last year's meeting 34-14.
Oct. 16th - Afton
- On a Fall Break Thursday night, Woodland will host Afton in week seven. Last season was the first time that these two had met in the last several decades. Woodland would score a season-high 68 points and the 68-point win would be the largest of their championship season.
Oct. 24th - Summit Christian
- In week eight, Woodland will host Summit Christian. Last season was Summit Christian's first year in 11-man football in nearly a decade and the Cougars dominated that meeting, winning 60-0. These two were district opponents back in 2016 and 2017, before Summit went to 8-man from 2018-2023.
Oct. 31st - AT Ketchum
- After back to back home games, Woodland closes out the regular season with back to back road games and it will start with Ketchum in week nine. Last season, these two teams met for the first time in the last two decades. Woodland would lock up the district championship with a 62-6 victory.
Nov. 7th - AT Fairland
- The regular season will come to a close in week ten with a road test against Fairland. Last season was no test for the Cougars as they completed their undefeated regular season with a 44-0 victory over Fairland. Prior to last season, the only other meeting was in the 2020 playoffs.

NOTABLE

The Woodland Cougars captured the 2024 Class A-2 state championship despite being the smallest 11-man school in the state and it's not even close. When you look at the way the classes are set up, Woodland is one of six schools that opted to be 11-man programs despite having the enrollment to be 8-man. Allen, Ringling, Rush Springs, Southwest Covenant and Thomas are the other five. But what is even more remarkable about Woodland's title run is the fact that they are not only small enough to be an 8-man program, they have the enrollment to actually drop down two classes. Every school in Class B-1 is bigger than Woodland and if the Cougars were in the appropriate class, they would actually be in Class B-2. So when you combine those facts with the fact that they beat everyone in 2024 by at least 20 points, you could make a pretty good argument that they would have won state in either Class B division, given anyone in Class A-1 and even possibly 2A-2 a run for their money. It was just a memorable season from start to finish and impressive in one way or another.
