Throughout the month of July and even into August, we are publishing well over 100 of the most in-depth team previews that you'll find anywhere to get you completely ready for the 2025 football season. This is something that began for us at PRZ-Oklahoma in 2021 and it continues to get bigger and better every single year. We're looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state in every class. From defending champions, to the top contenders and plenty of dark horses and other teams to know, we'll have complete coverage every single day. There will be multiple previews dropping every single day! In this post, we take a look at the Vian Wolverines!

Vian Wolverines

Preseason Prep Redzone Ranking: #2 In Class 2A-2

Head Coach: Gary Willis - 10th Season - 92-23 Record At Vian

2024 RESULTS (13-1 Record - Class 2A-2 Runner Ups)

Sept. 6th - Beat Eufaula 37-25
Sept. 13th - Beat Kiefer 45-14
Sept. 20th - Beat Pocola 67-34
Sept. 26th - Beat Spiro 64-6
Oct. 4th - Beat Antlers 48-0
Oct. 11th - Beat Atoka 48-0
Oct. 17th - Beat Henryetta 43-14
Oct. 25th - Beat Wilburton 56-13
Nov. 1st - Beat Morris 59-0
Nov. 8th - Beat Valliant 48-7
1st Round - Beat Kansas 38-7
Quarterfinals - Beat Beggs 35-7
Semifinals - Beat Colcord 35-16
Championship - Lost To Davis 28-18

2024 Offensive Scoring Average: 45.8 Points Per Game
2024 Defensive Scoring Average: 12.2 Points Per Game

The Vian Wolverines came into the 2024 football season with high expectations. But that's nothing different from a typical Vian football team. 2024 brought a new era of Class 2A football as the 64-team class was split into two divisions and the Wolverines found themselves in the new Class 2A-2. They came into the season as the preseason favorite to win the whole thing and for 13 weeks, they certainly lived up to the hype. They came out of the gates firing on the offensive side of the ball, specifically in a road showdown with Class A-1 contender Pocola. They scored a season-high 67 points in the win over the Indians. That would put a bow on non-district play as Vian started the season with a 3-0 mark. And after a rare 2023 season where they lost two district games, they turned things around in 2024. They were unchallenged in the district slate, running away with the district championship. In fact, the closest district game came in week seven, when they beat Henryetta by 29 points. They wrapped up the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record and certainly looked like a team that was on a one-way street to the state championship. They won each of their first three playoff games by at least 19 points, including a 35-16 semifinal win over Colcord to punch their ticket to Edmond. They met a Davis team that was 6-4 at the end of the regular season but they were playing some of their best football, including quarterfinal and semifinal wins over previously unbeaten teams. Turnovers would put Vian in a hole they couldn't overcome and the Wolverines had to settle for silver, losing to traditional power Davis 28-18. But as Vian turns the page, they expect to make another trip to Edmond in 2025.

2025 OUTLOOK

Vian comes into this season as the number two team in Class 2A-2 (behind defending champ Davis) and they expect to be one of the top teams in Class 2A-2 for the second straight year. And looking at the talent that Vian has returning, we don't see any reason why they can't make another trip to Edmond. Six starters return on the offensive side of the ball for a unit that was routinely lighting up the scoreboard, averaging around 45 points per game. And with Vian, all conversations start around their star running back, who was one of the best players in Oklahoma last season. They also return a starter at quarterback, who's improved quite a bit in the last six months and have more firepower in other spots. So it won't be surprising to see this offense doing the same this season or perhaps even flirting with averaging around 50 points per game. Defensively, they are even more experienced with seven starters returning on that side of the ball. They have to replace a couple pieces in the front seven but they also return just about everyone in the secondary and Vian historically has one of the hardest hitting defenses in the state so no matter who takes the field, that's the mentality and that's how they'll approach the 2025 football season. Looking at the schedule for this fall, the non-district slate will once again present some challenges to the Wolverines. But the district has quite a few first year head coaches and Vian will be heavy favorites to repeat as district champs. What will be interesting to follow is the Davis/Vian dynamic. If both teams end up winning their respective districts, they'll actually be on the same side of the bracket and would meet in the semifinals. But we're talking about possibilities for November when Vian is going to be taking it one game at a time as they look to complete the journey they started last season.

KEY LOSSES TO GRADUATION

Cash Collins - Defensive Lineman
Jacob Brannick - Wide Receiver (All State Honorable Mention)
Tristan Wiley - Linebacker

PLAYERS TO WATCH

We mentioned earlier how the Wolverines are going to have a returning starter at quarterback who has shown quite a bit of improvement. Senior signal caller [player_tooltip player_id='1322378' first='Cash' last='Trammel'] is that guy and we're looking forward to seeing what he does this season, running the show in the Vian offense. Last season, he managed the game and knew his role as he had two running backs that combined for over 3,000 yards. And while the running game is still the strength, we think that Trammel will offer some explosive playmaking with his arm. This spring, we got a chance to watch Trammel up close and his ability to push the ball down the field was one of our big takeaways.

All eyes might be on the other Vian running back but don't forget about what senior [player_tooltip player_id='1163096' first='Draighton' last='Fletcher'] can do with the ball in his hands. Despite splitting carries with a 2,000+ yard rusher, Fletcher still carved his way in and out of holes and would finish the 2024 season with over 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns. It was his second straight season with at least 1,000 yards on the ground. In the last two years, he's accounted for 31 rushing touchdowns and shows no signs of slowing down. We'll be keeping an eye on Fletcher and whether or not he's going to make it three straight seasons with at least 1,000 yards. He's one of the more underrated running backs in the state.

(2024 All State Honorable Mention)

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1703898' first='Ledger' last='Folsom'] is a new addition to the Wolverines this season. Folsom comes over to Vian from Eufaula and has the potential to give them an impact player in a few different spots. While he was at Eufuala, he was a run-first quarterback so there's no doubt that he's just a terrific athlete. Folsom has run for 31 touchdowns and over 1,500 yards in the last two seasons alone, while also having an impact in the passing game. We're very curious to see what Vian ultimately does with Folsom because the Vian backfield is already very packed with experienced and overall production. Folsom is also a standout on the track so the Wolverines will find a place for him.

Vian senior [player_tooltip player_id='424595' first='Masyn' last='Wright'] is one of the best football players in the state of Oklahoma. It doesn't matter what capacity we're talking about, Wright checks just about every box there is. Last season, he exploded for over 2,100 yards and 37 touchdowns on the ground. He was a threat as a pass-catcher out of the backfield and as a return man in special teams. Defensively, he lives up to the Vian hype of having a hard-hitting defense. Wright was one of the finalists for our PRZ-Oklahoma Player Of The Year award. Needless to say, he's going into this season as one of the favorites to win it. If you're looking for an easy highlight reel, here's your guy as every time Wright touches the ball, he's a threat to score.

(2024 Player Of The Year Finalist)

Senior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1703900' first='Riley' last='Ellis'] is going to be a player that we keep an eye on this season. While several of the other players listed are defensive standouts, they might be known more for what they can do offensively. For Ellis, it's all about what he brings to the table on the defensive side of the ball. He's the perfect example of a player that we were talking about earlier in the preview when it came to “hard-hitting defensive players” after we watched him go to work in a couple games last season. Ellis has the ability to be an absolute nightmare for opponents on that side of the ball. We're looking forward to seeing what kind of production he ends up having this season.

MORE NAMES TO KNOW

[player_tooltip player_id='1573294' first='Adoff' last='Stahl'] - 2027 Defensive Back
Amos Wright - 2029 Running Back
Garritt Hunt - 2026 Offensive/Defensive Lineman
Trace Sanders - 2026 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
Tyson Murphy - 2026 Fullback/Linebacker

2025 SCHEDULE

Sept. 5th - Eufaula
- Vian will once again kick off their regular season against Eufaula. This has been a very friendly non-district series to the Wolverines. They beat the Ironheads 37-25 last season and overall, they've won 15 in a row in the series. Their last loss came back in 2008 when Eufaula won 23-14.
Sept. 12th - AT Kiefer
- The Wolverines will hit the road for the first time in week two as they face Kiefer. The Wolverines beat a young Trojan team 45-14 last season. Kiefer got the best of Vian back in the 2022 playoffs. This could be a very competitive game with the amount of returning talent for both sides.
Sept. 19th - Pocola
- The non-district slate will wrap up with a week three home game against Pocola. Wright ran all over the field in this match-up a year ago, as they scored a season-high 67 points in the win on the road. Both offenses will expect to light up the scoreboard when they meet again in 2025.
Sept. 26th - Spiro
- District play kicks off in week four with a home game against Spiro. Vian beat the Bulldogs 64-6 in a game that they dominated and put away early. These two teams have been off and on district opponents for the last two decades and the Wolverines hold a 9-0 record during that time.
Oct. 3rd - AT Antlers
- Vian travels to Antlers to kick off the October portion of the schedule. Last season, the Wolverines would win 48-0 and that was the first time these two played since 2015. They were district foes from 2012-2015. Antlers will have a first year head coach this season.
Oct. 10th - Atoka
- The second half of the regular season begins with a home game against Atoka. These two teams met a few times in the last several years but strictly in the playoffs. They met in 2020 and 2021, with Vian winning each meeting. Last season, the Wolverines won 48-0.
Oct. 16th - AT Henryetta
- On a Fall Break Thursday night, Vian goes on the road to square off with Henryetta. Last season, Vian won 43-14 and like we mentioned earlier, this was actually the “closest” district game in Vian's schedule. They've met in each of the last three years and all three have been big Vian wins.
Oct. 24th - Wilburton
- Vian hosts Wilburton in week eight and this will be their final home game of the regular season. The Wolverines rolled to a 56-13 victory last season and this is another series that has been completely one-sided, no matter when they've played. Prior to last year, the last meeting was in 2016.
Oct. 31st - AT Morris
- On a Halloween night in week nine, Vian goes on the road to face Morris. Prior to last season, these two teams only met in the playoffs in the last few decades. Vian prevailed last season 59-0 and that would actually end up being the largest margin of victory for the Wolverines.
Nov. 7th - AT Valliant
- The regular season comes to an end in week ten, with a road game against Valliant. The Bulldogs have a couple major college prospects so they could present some challenges to the Wolverines. Last year was the first meeting in recent memory and Vian prevailed 48-7.

NOTABLE

Head coach Gary Willis has a chance to reach a major milestone this season. He's going into his tenth season as head coach of the Wolverines and he currently has a record of 92-23 as Vian's head ball coach. Unless the Wolverines have a season riddled with injuries and completely goes off the rails, we have a feeling that they'll win at least eight games, which would give him 100 victories since he took over in 2016. Willis won nearly 80 games as head coach at Keys before joining the Vian staff a few years before he was promoted to head coach. Simply put, he's one of the best football coaches in southeastern Oklahoma and we don't think there's a debate about that. Willis took over a Vian program that was rolling under Brandon Tyler and he's kept this thing moving over the last decade. They've knocked on the door a couple times of state championship success. Of course there was last season but they also made it to the state title game in 2019. And as we mentioned last year, with this new split in Class 2A, it really sets up for Vian (along with a few others) to be the dominating program of this class. Now, they have to prove it on the field and erase the memories of last year's championship loss. But they have the team to do it.

LAST FIVE SEASONS

2024 - 13-1 - Class 6A-2 Runner Ups
2023 - 8-5 - Lost In Class 2A Quarterfinals
2022 - 9-3 - Lost In Class 2A 2nd Round
2021 - 10-2 - Lost In Class 2A 2nd Round
2020 - 9-2 - Lost In Class 2A 2nd Round

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

1 State Championship

1971 - Beat Lawton MacArthur 25-13
