The Valliant Bulldogs came into the 2024 football season as a dark horse to keep an eye on in the brand new Class 2A-2. They had quite a bit of talent on the roster but they also hadn't had a winning season in several years and it had been a few years since they made the playoffs. Plus they had a first year head coach as Joe Jones came over after being head coach at Wynnewood. Things didn't get off to a good start for the Bulldogs. Valliant opened the season with three straight losses and limped into a bye week before district play at 0-3. But things turned around instantly when the Bulldogs went into district play. They won five of their next six games, with the only loss coming to Henryetta by one point. In fact, the five wins were all by 20 points or more. Valliant was 5-1 in district play going into the final week of the season and they had a showdown with top-ranked Vian. The Wolverines dominated with a 48-7 victory. But the Bulldogs still had their playoff ticket punched and were ready for the postseason. They opened up the playoffs with a first round game against Colcord. They were shut out 40-0 and the season came to an end at 5-6. Despite the first round exit, the 2024 season was still a step in the right direction. They earned their playoff spot and things look to be trending in the right direction. There are plenty of reasons to be optimistic as the Bulldogs turn the page and look ahead to 2025.

2025 OUTLOOK

The Bulldogs come into the 2025 football season as a top ten team in the 2A-2 preseason rankings. Valliant will look to get out to a fast start this fall and they have the experience and overall talent to do just that. Nine starters are back for an offense that averaged nearly 30 points per game last season. And if you look at this offense when they got into district play, they started playing some of their best football. The quarterback returns, the majority of the offensive line returns and plenty of skill players return to make this offense a very intriguing unit to watch this season. Defensively, the Bulldogs also bring back eight starters. And just like with the offense, the defense has returning experience and overall talent everywhere on the defense. Look for the Bulldogs to be improved on the defensive side of the ball as well in 2025. Now, the schedule will once again be challenging. They play 3A's #8 Idabel and 2A-1's #10 Hugo in the first two games of the year. Valliant will be hungry to get out to a fast start and compete with those teams. But the district should set up for Valliant to make a run. Vian is still the favorite to not only win the district but possibly the 2A-2 state title. The Bulldogs won't have to worry about the Wolverines until week ten and they will get to face Vian at home this year. And if Valliant wants to win the district and compete for the state championship, they have to win games like this. But we're a long way from the first Friday in November. Valliant will look to take the next step this fall and they have the experience and firepower to do just that.

Senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1718947' first='Brody' last='Dorries'] returns for another season as QB1 of the Bulldogs and he will bring a true dual-threat presence to the Valliant backfield. Last season, Dorries threw for nearly 900 yards and ten touchdowns. He also added over 600 yards and nine touchdowns. It's going to be interesting to see what kind of production Dorries has this season when you consider how much returning talent he has around him. It won't be surprising if both his passing numbers and running numbers go up this season. And if that happens, Valliant's offense could be incredibly improved.

Senior running back and linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='587265' first='Kenny' last='Golston'] is going into his fourth season as a starter. There simply won't be many players in Class 2A-2 that are as experienced as Golston. Last season, Golston would run for just over 1,100 yards and 18 touchdowns on the season. He's been a star for the Bulldogs since his freshman season and now he's looking to help lead Valliant to new heights this season. Golston will join Dorries in the backfield and between these two guys, they could combine for well over 2,000 yards on the ground. Earlier this offseason, Golston announced his commitment to Idaho.

Junior defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1171159' first='Kyng' last='Golston'] is one of the state's top overall prospects in the 2027 class. Similar to his older brother Kenny, he's been considered one of the best in his class since his freshman season and nothing has really changed. He's earned offers from major programs and he's turned into one of the top prospects in this region. Last season, Golston finished the year with over 50 tackles, including ten for a loss and he also had nine sacks. Golston is a mauler on the line of scrimmage but he is very underrated as an overall athlete and can be used in a variety of ways.

Senior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1718952' first='Rowan' last='Gee'] is another player to keep an eye on with the Valliant defense. Gee was incredibly productive for the Bulldogs last season and looking back at some of our notes from last summer, we didn't know much of anything about Gee. So what he was able to do during his junior season definitely categorizes as a breakout season. The Bulldog backer would finish the year with 90 tackles and filled up the stat sheet defensively in other areas. Gee took advantage of playing behind a dynamo like Golston and the production definitely showed.

Junior [player_tooltip player_id='1024950' first='Ryker' last='Prince'] is a player that could be primed for a breakout season this fall. You started to see signs of it last fall and he produced at a high level as an overall playmaker on offense but we could see that production sky rocket this season with another year as a starter. On offense, Prince totaled over 500 yards and finished with seven touchdowns. He earned postseason honors for his work at the wide receiver position. And with Valliant having two playmakers in the backfield, they need a weapon in the passing game to help keep Valliant balanced and Prince could be that guy.

2025 SCHEDULE

Aug. 29th - Idabel
- For the second straight year, Valliant opens up their regular season against Idabel. Last season, the Bulldogs felt the true effects of the growing pains they were going through when they lost 51-13. This is one of several series that Valliant is hungry to turn around as they've lost seven straight.
Sept. 5th - AT Hugo
- The first road game comes in week one when Valliant heads to Hugo. Last season, the Bulldogs came up short, losing 22-14. That was the sixth consecutive loss to the Buffaloes and there's no doubt that Valliant is hungry to turn things around in this series. Hugo is a preseason top ten team in Class 2A-1.
Sept. 12th - Rush Springs
- Valliant's non-district slate comes to a close in week two, with a home game against Rush Springs. This was a new series for the Bulldogs as they haven't played Rush Springs anytime in recent memory. The first meeting did not go well as the Bulldogs were shut out 12-0.
Sept. 26th - Antlers
- After a week off, Valliant will open up their district slate with a home game against Antlers. Last season, the Bulldogs rolled to a 49-12 victory to kick off a very successful district run. These two teams have met every year since 2016. Antlers has the overall advantage but Valliant has won two out of the last three.
Oct. 3rd - AT Spiro
- The Bulldogs go back on the road to face Spiro in week five. Valliant snapped a three-game losing streak to Spiro last season, when they beat the Bulldogs 62-14. The 62 points were the most points they scored in 2024. They'll look to start a winning streak of their own against Spiro this year.
Oct. 10th - Henryetta
- There were a few new district opponents for Valliant in 2024 and Henryetta was one of them. The Bulldogs came up short last year, losing a heartbreaker 42-41. Prior to last season's meeting, these two teams hadn't met since the 2010 playoffs. Henryetta will look pretty different this fall.
Oct. 16th - AT Atoka
- On a Fall Break Thursday night, the Bulldogs will hit the road to face Atoka. Valliant shut out the Wampus Cats last season, winning 49-0 and that ended up being the largest margin of victory. These two have been off and on district opponents over the last two decades. Valliant has the series edge.
Oct. 23rd - Morris
- In week eight, Valliant hosts Morris and they were another new district opponent for the Bulldogs last season. Valliant rolled to a 42-6 victory late in the 2024 regular season. And just like the Henryetta match-up, prior to last season, these two hadn't met since the 2009 playoffs.
Oct. 31st - AT Wilburton
- On a Halloween Friday night in week nine, Valliant goes on the road to face off with Wilburton. The Bulldogs rolled to a 34-14 victory last season. These two teams have been district opponents since 2016 and the series has favored the Bulldogs. Valliant has won six of the last eight.
Nov. 6th - Vian
- If Valliant wants to become that serious contender in the state championship picture, this is a game that you have to win. The Bulldogs welcome in Vian in week ten and the Wolverines don't lose district games very often. They beat Valliant 48-7 last season and finished as 2A-2 Runner Ups.

NOTABLE

The Valliant Bulldogs not only expect to make it back to the playoffs this season. They want to take that next step as a program. They will be looking for their first playoff win since 2017. And now that Valliant is in the new Class 2A-2 and there are only four rounds, they can make program history if they win a first round game. Every other year that Valliant has won a first round game, they would lose in the second round and they've never played in the quarterfinals. The Bulldogs are going into this season as a top eight team in the Class 2A-2 preseason rankings and they want to finish the season as just that. They want to make it to the final eight and that means quarterfinals. The path isn't an easy one but if they can get off to a fast start and avoid any stumbling blocks in district play, they could possibly contend with Vian in week ten.
