When you just look at the results, a 4-7 record and first round playoff exit can be easy to overlook. But for the Southmoore Sabercats, it was a very positive step in the right direction. Southmoore opened the season with a 2-2 record, including a win over rival Westmoore and then a win over U.S. Grant in their first ever home game on campus. They suffered back to back losses but then beat Northwest Classen and Piedmont in back to back weeks to punch their ticket to the playoffs. They dropped their final two games to Putnam City and Stillwater but they were back in the playoffs on their own merrit for the first time since 2016. They participated in the 2020 playoffs in the Covid-impacted season where everyone made the playoffs. The Sabercats would meet Putnam City North in the first round and for the second time in 2024, they came up short against the Panthers. The season came to an end at 4-7 but that was definitely a step in the right direction. In the previous four seasons, Southmoore had a 4-36 record. They won as many games in 2024 as they had in the previous four seasons combined. The offense also had an improvement of 10 more points per game in 2024 and the defense gave up 16 fewer points per game in 2024. And as they head into the 2025 football season, they have more momentum than ever before for a new era of Southmoore football.

2025 OUTLOOK

The Sabercats come into the 2025 football season as the number six team in our preseason 6A-2 rankings. And they'll be led into this season by a new face. Brett Jones took over the Southmoore program this offseason. He spent last year as an assistant at Norman North and was the longtime head coach at Bristow before that. And he takes over a Southmoore program that is definitely pointed in the right direction and they aren't lacking talent coming into this season. Offensively, they bring back seven starters on that side of the ball. It starts with the return of the quarterback and he got progressively better in his first season as starter. Defensively, the Sabercats also bring back seven starters and they have a D1 commit anchoring things and setting the tone on the line of scrimmage. Southmoore also has some talented younger players that might be flying under the radar right now but won't be underrated for very long. The Sabercats should make another playoff appearance this fall with six out of the eight teams from each district making it to the playoffs. But Southmoore wants more than that. The next step is for Southmoore to find success when they make it to the playoffs. They won't settle for just another playoff appearance this season. Southmoore first made the playoffs in 2009 and they made a run to the semifinals that year. But they are 0-7 in their last seven playoff appearances. They look to end that streak in 2025.

Southmoore's 2027 class has gone through the growing pains and appear to be ready to take the next step this fall. This class has a few talented pieces coming back this season. Linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1714999' first='Andrew' last='Eagle'] is one of the names that we'll be watching on the defensive side of the ball. The Sabercats have some serious experience and overall production returning within the front seven and Eagle is just one part of it. When we put on the film, we see a player that constantly keeps his eyes in the backfield and because of that, it feels like he's always in the right place at the right time.

Defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='1715002' first='DJ' last='Murray'] is another Southmoore 2027 prospect to keep an eye on this season. Murray is a ‘27 prospect that we've seen perform at a high level in various 7v7 tournaments. But now we're looking forward to seeing how he produces when the pads come on this fall. Murray feels like a good representation of this Southmoore team because he has a lot of momentum after a strong offseason. He's definitely a player that we're going to be keeping an eye on. All signs point to Murray having that breakout season in 2025. He might be going into the year under the radar but we don't think that will last very long.

Senior defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1179993' first='Nakwaine' last='Carter'] committed to Kansas earlier this offseason and he is very firmly one of the top defensive lineman prospects in the state. Carter is so incredibly disruptive from the middle of the defensive line. We've watched him in person a few times and each time, it's amazing how much of the game he impacts. The obvious moments are exactly that. When he pushes an offensive lineman into the backfield and breaks up a play. But his IQ is outstanding. He always has his eye on the quarterback and even if he's being held up by a double team, he gets his hands up in the passing lane. He's a special player.

Junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='445315' first='Taven' last='Hayes'] returns for his second season as QB1 of the Sabercats this season. Last year, Hayes definitely had some growing pains in his first year as a starter but he absolutely produced. Hayes Put up some numbers that were among the best in Class 6A-2 and he's hungry for more in 2025. Hayes is a true dual-threat at the quarterback position. We got a chance to watch Southmoore in person during the spring and Hayes was just as dangerous with his legs as he was with his arm. That running ability might be flying under the radar but he's primed for a big year.

Sept. 5th - Westmoore
- For the second straight year, Southmoore will open the regular season with a rivalry clash against Westmoore. Last season was a good year for the Sabercats. They beat Westmoore 17-14 and that would snap a nine-game losing streak to the Jaguars. The last win came back in 2015.
Sept. 12th - Moore
- Southmoore will host rival Moore in week two and the Sabercats are looking to be city champs for the first time since 2015. Last season, the Lions beat the Sabercats 45-13. While Southmoore is looking to become city champs, they're also looking to snap a 4-game losing streak to Moore.
Sept. 19th - AT Putnam City North
- Non-district play will wrap up with a road game against Putnam City North in week three. The Sabercats met the Panthers twice in 2024. They lost in the regular season and then again when they had their rematch in the first round of the playoffs. Southmoore's looking to snap a 3-game losing streak in the series.
Sept. 25th - AT U.S. Grant
- District play will open up in week four with a road game against U.S. Grant. For the Sabercats, the drop to 6A-2 last fall brought a ton of new opponents for Southmoore and the Generals were one of them. Last season, the Sabercats beat U.S. Grant 51-7 in their first ever home game on campus.
Oct. 2nd - Lawton Eisenhower
- After back to back road games, Southmoore returns home for a Thursday night clash with Lawton Eisenhower in week five. The Sabercats lost a close and high-scoring game in 2024. They fell 42-35 but this year's match-up features two teams that have first year head coaches.
Oct. 10th - AT Choctaw
- In week six, Southmoore goes on the road to face defending 6A-2 state champion Choctaw. Last year, the Sabercats lost 51-17 and the Yellowjackets went on to win the district and eventually the state title. Southmoore wants to get to that position. Prior to last year, these two hadn't met since 2013.
Oct. 16th - Northwest Classen
- On a Fall Break Thursday night, Southmoore will host Northwest Classen in district play. Last season, the Sabercats rolled to a 63-0 victory over the Knights. It would be their largest margin of victory all season. Prior to last year, these two teams had never met but that changed in 2024.
Oct. 24th - Piedmont
- The Sabercats will host Piedmont in week eight and this match-up could be just as close as we saw from these two teams last year. Southmoore beat the Wildcats 29-28 last season. Prior to last year, these two teams never met. Both moved into 6A-2 with Southmoore dropping down and Piedmont moving up.
Oct. 31st - AT Putnam City
- On a Halloween night in week nine, Southmoore goes on the road to face Putnam City in a massive district game late in the year. The Sabercats fell to the Pirates 28-14 last season. And Putnam City looks like a team that could make some noise in 6A-2. This would be a huge win for Southmoore.
Nov. 7th - AT Stillwater
- The regular season wraps up in week ten with a road game against Stillwater. Last year, the Stillwater game was the largest loss of the year. This year, the Pioneers are strong again but Southmoore will be looking to pull the upset. The Sabercats have never beaten Stillwater.

2024 not only brought success on the gridiron but it brought a new gridiron altogether. Since Southmoore opened in 2008, they had played all of their home games at the stadium on the Moore High School campus. But on September 27th, 2024, the Sabercats hosted their first ever home game, on the campus of Southmoore High School. Moore Public Schools had a massive bond pass that would allow Southmoore and nearby Westmoore to build on-campus stadiums for their football teams. They built the new Southmoore stadium around the practice field they had been using for years. And in that official home opener, the Sabercats were victorious, beating U.S. Grant 51-7. This year, they get to host both of their city rivals, Westmoore in the opener and Moore the following week on campus. Last year felt like the start of a new era of Southmoore football in more than one way.
