The Shawnee Wolves came into the 2024 football season looking to continue the improvement they had in 2023 and there is no doubt that they accomplished just that. In 2022, the Wolves were winless. They went 0-10 and had to hit reset on the program. Head coach Jason Madonna took over and they went 3-7 in his first season. The Wolves doubled their win total in 2024, going 6-5 and making it back to the Class 5A playoffs. Shawnee got out to a good start, going 3-1 in the first month, with the only loss coming in the season opener. They tripped up against Booker T Washington but then rattled off another three-game winning streak to go into the final two weeks with a 6-2 record. Unfortunately, they dropped the final two games in the regular season and that dropped them to fourth in the district. So while they punched their ticket to the playoffs, they also had a first round match-up against a district champ. That district champ was Del City and the season came to an end with a 31-0 loss. But again, Shawnee improved in 2024 and took positive steps in the right direction. And as we start looking ahead to the start of the 2025 football season, there is plenty of room for optimism and the Wolves have the potential to be the surprise team in Class 5A. It's been a few years since Shawnee was a legitimate threat in 5A football but we could see them turn into one this season.

2025 OUTLOOK

For the first time in a while, Shawnee comes into a season as a preseason top ten team. They check in at number six in our Class 5A rankings. And while Carl Albert has absolutely owned Class 5A for the last three years, they got hit hard by graduation and 5A feels more wide open and that will certainly benefit Shawnee. Six starters return on the offensive side of the ball for the Wolves and the conversation should start and stop with the offensive line. Simply put, the Wolves have one of the best offensive line units in the state. They have multiple guys that will be playing college football and they have size across the board that most 5A opponents aren't going to be able to contend with. But that's not all. The Wolves return some serious talent in the skill department and have a new addition at quarterback that should be able to move this offense up and down the field. Defensively, the Wolves return four starters from last year's team. So it's a unit that will be growing up quickly when the season kicks off. And there might be a few games where Shawnee just has to outscore their opponent but the Wolves have the firepower for that but as long as this defense gets through the fire, they'll be ready to perform when it matters most. Now, the schedule. Shawnee is in a district that features multiple teams that are in the 5A preseason rankings and there are a few teams right on the outside looking in of being considered top ten teams in 5A this fall. They'll need to take it one game at a time but this team has the potential to compete for the district crown and so much more in 2025.

Senior quarterback and defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='1198313' first='Braylon' last='Lassiter'] is the first of several key additions to the Shawnee roster this offseason. Lassiter spent his junior season at Norman North and played primarily on defense. But Lassiter is a terrific quarterback from watching him in person in the last two springs. And then you add the athletic element and if he needs to, he can beat defenses with his legs. Lassiter has an absolute rocket of an arm and he's going to have time from his offensive line to push the ball downfield and he has the arm strength to get it where it needs to be. If Lassiter stays healthy this fall, he could be a guy that puts up monster numbers on offense.

The Wolves have a few 2028 prospects to keep an eye on as they kick off the 2025 football season. Linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1610411' first='Kade' last='McKee'] is a prospect that Shawnee coaches are very excited about when it comes to his potential. And this is a Shawnee defense that should really be improved when you consider all the experience they have returning, specifically in the front seven. McKee feels like a linebacker that is primed for a breakout season this fall. Based on everything we know about him right now, he's a player that could be a heat-seeking missile on defense. The ceiling is very high and we're excited to see what kind of production he has this season.

The first of two pillars on this Shawnee offensive line is senior [player_tooltip player_id='1612458' first='Kaden' last='Bramlage'] and he has a chance to be just as impactful and important to Shawnee on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Bramlage is a terrific offensive lineman but he's also not too shabby on the defensive side of the ball. And the thing that makes him so valuable on both sides is the mean streak he plays with. We got a chance to watch Bramlage for two hours earlier this year and the funny part about his desire to dominate the guy in front of him is he always does it with a smile on his face. After watching him in the spring, our opinion is higher of Bramlage and we think he could have a huge senior year.

Joining Bramlage on the offensive line is [player_tooltip player_id='1262594' first='Ja'Qwon' last='Evans'] and he committed to North Texas earlier this summer. It was a little over a year ago that we first got to watch Evans go to work in person and we were definitely impressed. He was one of the top offensive linemen at one of our camps and he has continued to get better from there. While Bramlage dominates one side of the line of scrimmage, Evans can dominate the other side. And like Bramlage, Evans will also play for the Wolves on the defensive side of the ball. But it's clear that his ceiling is incredibly high on the offensive side of the line of scrimmage. It will be fun to see what impact he has this fall.

Senior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1626574' first='Tate' last='McClendon'] is another new addition to the Wolves' offense and between McClendon and Lassiter, this Shawnee backfield is going to be incredibly tough to contain behind that offensive line. McClendon enjoyed a breakout season last fall with Prague. While The Red Devils struggled in the win-loss column, McClendon was absolutely electric. He finished the year with well over 1,500 yards and 21 touchdowns. If he can replicate that production for the Wolves this season, Shawnee is going to be in a very good position in Class 5A. It will also be fun to see how McClendon competes against a higher classification of opponents.

2025 SCHEDULE

Sept. 5th - Putnam City North
- For the second straight season, Shawnee will open up the year against Putnam City North. Last season, it didn't go so well as they lost 35-3 on the road. This year, the Wolves will host the Panthers in their only home game in September. Shawnee will be hungry to get off to a fast start in 2025.
Sept. 12th - AT Ardmore
- Shawnee hits the road to face Ardmore in week two. This will be the first of three consecutive games away from home for the Wolves. Last season, they beat the Tigers 34-13. Ardmore is a preseason top ten team in Class 4A this season but Shawnee has won the last two in the series.
Sept. 19th - AT Duncan
- The Wolves wrap up their non-district slate with a road game against Duncan. The Demons were a new opponent for the Wolves in 2024. Shawnee had no problems, winning 21-7. But that was the first time these two teams met on the gridiron since they faced off from 2014-2017.
Sept. 26th - AT East Central
- Despite playing five teams from the Tulsa area, this will be Shawnee's only trip to Tulsa during the regular season. They open up district play against East Central in week four. Last season, the Wolves rolled to a 28-7 victory. They'll need to get off to another strong start in district play this fall.
Oct. 3rd - Booker T Washington
- After three straight road games, Shawnee hosts Booker T Washington in week five. On paper, this looks like a match-up that could end up deciding the district championship. The Hornets beat the Wolves 35-7 last season. If Shawnee wants to truly contend in Class 5A, they need a win here.
Oct. 10th - Coweta
- The second half of the regular season kicks off with a home game against Coweta. The Wolves beat the Tigers 20-14 last season but Coweta brings back a ton of young talent from last year's team. Last year's victory over Coweta would snap a four-game losing streak against the Tigers.
Oct. 16th - AT Durant
- On a Fall Break Thursday night, Shawnee heads down to Durant to square off with the Lions. The Wolves beat Durant 28-7 last season and that was a big win to punch their ticket into the playoffs. This season, they'll be looking to continue their winning ways in the series with what would be their sixth straight win.
Oct. 24th - Edison
- In week eight, Shawnee returns home to square off with Edison. This was the biggest win of the season for Shawnee last year as the Wolves won 63-0. It was their only shutout and obviously the largest margin of victory. The Wolves haven't lost to Edison in the last two decades.
Oct. 31st - Bishop Kelley
- This two-game stretch against Bishop Kelley and McAlester in week ten is critical to Shawnee's district championship hopes. The Wolves square off with the Comets in week nine at home and they'll be looking to erase the memory of last year's 58-20 defeat. That was their largest loss in 2024.
Nov. 7th - AT McAlester
- The regular season comes to an end in week ten with a road game against McAlester. The Wolves fell to the Buffaloes 20-7 last season and they haven't had much luck in this series. They've lost nine of the last ten. McAlester could look different in 2025 under a new head coach.

NOTABLE

Shawnee took a significant step forward in 2024. Like we mentioned earlier, 3-17 in the previous two seasons and then they go 6-5 and make the playoffs. But the Wolves aren't going to settle for another playoff appearance. They want to have success when they get there. Their only playoff win in the last decade came in 2020, during the Covid-impacted season, where every team could participate. Normally, Shawnee would have played a district champion but instead, they played and beat a team that wouldn't have been in the playoffs. But it's going to be a long road for the Wolves to get that playoff success, literally. Shawnee plays five games away from home this season and all five games will feature road trips that are at least an hour and a half. But the only trip that Shawnee is wanting to make takes a little less than an hour. And that's the drive from Shawnee high school to UCO's Chad Richison Stadium, where they'll once again play the state championships in 2025.
