After two seasons of 1st round exits in Class 2A, the Pawhuska Huskies moved back down to Class A as 2A and A were split into two divisions and they landed in Class A-1. With the drop down in classes and a decent amount of talent coming back, expectations were high for the Huskies coming into the season. They were a top five team in the preseason rankings and they played like it early on. They would win their first three games in convincing fashion, setting up a showdown with Class A-2's top-ranked Woodland and they suffered their first loss to the eventual state champs there. The Huskies would bounce back the following week but then got blitzed by Pawnee in week five. From there, Pawhuska would win four straight to close out the regular season with an 8-2 record and took second place in the district. They beat Hartshorne with ease in the first round before losing a heartbreaker in the quarterfinals to Christian Heritage. They would score a touchdown to make it 38-36 CHA but didn't get the 2-point conversion or the onside kick and the Crusaders escaped with the win. The season came to an end at 9-3 but after back to back 6-5 seasons and 1st round exits, it was clear that the Huskies were headed in the right direction in 2024 and that's only going to continue as we start looking ahead to 2025.

2025 OUTLOOK

For the second straight season, Pawhuska comes into the year as a top five team in the Class A-1 preseason rankings. The Huskies are looking to build off last year's 9-3 mark and go on a deep run in 2025. On paper, they certainly look like a team that could find their way to Edmond. Offensively, Pawhuska brings back six starters from last year's unit that averaged nearly 50 points per game and scored at least 50 points in half of their games last season. Pawhuska will have a new quarterback under center but not a quarterback unfamiliar with starting. The Huskies got a few key additions this offseason, including a multiple year starter at the quarterback position that will give this high-powered offense an additional boost. And while Pawhuska has been known for their offense under head coach Matt Hennesy, don't overlook the talent they have returning on defense. Nine starters are back for a defense that could end up being one of the better units in Class A-1. The Huskies are incredibly strong up front with the front seven and might have one of the best linebacker groups in several of the smaller classes. The schedule will once again be a challenging one and the Huskies have to get over the Pawnee hurdle if they're going to contend for the district championship. But we think this team certainly has a solid shot of making a run to Edmond and contending for their first ever state championship.

We mentioned earlier how the linebacker group could be one of the better ones within the smaller classes. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='1670662' first='Dane' last='Jensen'] is one of those linebackers you need to keep an eye on this season. He was one of three Pawhuska linebackers last fall that finished with over 100 tackles on the season. He also added 13 tackles for loss and seven sacks on the year. Jensen also impressed us when we got a chance to watch him in person at our last PRZ-Oklahoma camp. The Pawhuska senior has good size and speed and is an absolute problem for opposing offensive linemen trying to keep him from coming off the edge. He's an incredibly aggressive outside linebacker.

The first of two major additions to the Huskies this offseason was senior [player_tooltip player_id='1660439' first='Jarek' last='Edwards'] to both sides of the ball. Offensively, Edwards gives the Huskies a unique weapon at the wide receiver position. He's measuring in at 6'5 and will be a match-up nightmare for just about every team that the Huskies go up against this fall. Defensively, Edwards also has the ability to help out a very experienced Pawhuska defense. With his size and athleticism, Edwards is going to be one of the better two-way players in Class A-1 this season. It wouldn't be surprising to see Edwards become a breakout star on the offensive side of the ball as one of the top receivers in the class.

The Pawhuska offense has the potential to be one of the best in the state this season but it will start up front with the offensive line. They'll have one of the more experienced offensive linemen in the state with senior [player_tooltip player_id='806165' first='Jaxon' last='Arnett'] returning for his fourth season as a starter up front. Arnett has been incredibly valuable to the Huskies during his career. He has the potential and ability to start and play at all five positions on the offensive line. And while the linebacker group is incredibly talented, the Huskies aren't lacking talent on the defensive line. Arnett has also been a critical part of what the Huskies do up front. Look for Arnett to set the tone on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

Senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='935005' first='Kane' last='Foreman'] is another new addition to the Huskies. He started for Copan, playing 8-man football for the last few years. But now, Foreman is transitioning to the 11-man game and looking to lead the Huskies to new heights this fall. Pawhuska will benefit from the production that Foreman brings to the table. He's thrown for nearly 6,000 yards and 80 touchdowns in his career. He's a big quarterback with a rocket launcher for an arm and he can move around a bit too. If Foreman has a seamless transition to the 11-man game this fall, that could very well be the missing piece for the Huskies to make that run to Edmond and contend for a state title.

Junior [player_tooltip player_id='1325101' first='Vann' last='Wildcat'] was one of the best two-way players in Class A-1 a season ago and we don't anticipate that changing as he prepares for his junior season. First up, Wildcat is another part of that linebacker group that is incredibly deep and talented. Wildcat led the Huskies with 123 tackles last season and will look to build on that production from a year ago. He'll be a 3-year starter on defense. He also started for Pawhuska on the offensive side of the ball as a running back. He finished with nearly 600 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. While the Huskies will look to air it out, don't overlook their physical running game with Wildcat and Foreman.

2025 SCHEDULE

Aug. 29th - Nowata
- It's a rare district game in week zero but that's what's happening when Pawhuska hosts Nowata in the season opener. Almost every district game is played from weeks 4-10. But this one happens in week zero. Pawhuska won 50-6 last year and has won three straight in the series.
Sept. 5th - AT Meeker
- In week one, Pawhuska has their first road game of the 2025 season as they'll head to Meeker. The Bulldogs have been a perennial playoff team forever but last year, the Huskies rolled to a 60-13 victory. Pawhuska will be planning similar dominance in the rematch this fall.
Sept. 12th - AT Hominy
- Pawhuska goes on the road to face Hominy in week two. The Huskies beat the Bucks 46-24 in last year's meeting, snapping a two-game losing streak to Hominy. Since Hennesy took over in 2018, the Huskies are 6-3 against the Huskies. Prior to that, they had lost five straight.
Sept. 19th - Woodland
- If Pawhuska is going to contend for the state championship, this is one of those “measuring stick” games that contenders have during the season. They host defending A-2 champion Woodland in week three. They fell 46-6 last season and have dropped the last two against the Cougars.
Sept. 26th - AT Oklahoma Union
- After that season opener also opening district play, the Huskies will continue district play here in week four, on the road, against Oklahoma Union. Pawhuska won 52-20 in their match-up a season ago and the Huskies have absolutely owned this series, going 6-0 in the last decade.
Oct. 3rd - Pawnee
- Pawhuska has been outstanding under Hennesy but Pawnee has been the thorn in his side. In week five, the Huskies host Pawnee and are looking to snap a three-game losing streak to the Black Bears. The Huskies lost last year's meeting 64-16. The district title could be on the line here.
Oct. 9th - AT Tonkawa
- After the week five showdown with Pawnee, the Huskies have a short week to get ready for a Thursday night road game in Tonkawa. Pawhuska rolled to a 50-12 victory over the Buccaneers in last season's meeting and have won the last two in the series. But this is a tough back to back on the schedule.
Oct. 24th - Quapaw
- After a bye week in the middle of October, the Huskies will host Quapaw in week eight. Pawhuska won 72-13 last season and they've been dominant against Quapaw in the last few years. They were also district foes in 2020 and 2021 and they won those match-ups 52-19 and 57-6 respectively.
Oct. 31st - AT Caney Valley
- The Huskies will go on the road in week nine against Caney Valley and this series has been completely one-sided over the last three seasons. In 2022 and 2023, they met in non-district play. Last year, they became district foes. Pawhuska has put up 80-plus points in the last two meetings.
Nov. 7th - AT Morrison
- The regular season will wrap up on the road against Morrison in week ten. Pawhuska rolled to a 42-12 victory in this match-up a year ago. The Huskies have state title aspirations so continuing to roll and gain momentum as they enter the playoffs will be a high priority here.

NOTABLE

The 2024 football season saw Pawhuska drop back down to Class A after two seasons in Class 2A. While the Huskies found themselves in the larger division of Class A, it was still much more manageable than 2A. In those two seasons, the Huskies went 6-5 each year and lost in the first round of the playoffs. That came after double digit win seasons and trips to the semifinals in 2020 and 2021. So needless to say, the Huskies were ready to get back to Class A. And they would go 9-3 and nearly make another trip to the semifinals in the newly formed Class A-1. Now, as we start looking ahead to the 2025 season, the Huskies have raised the bar of expectations coming into this season. They expect to not only contend for the district championship but to contend for the state championship as well. The Huskies have never played for a state championship. They are 0-5 all time in the semifinal round. But this year's team has the experience, overall talent and coaching to take them further than they've ever been before.
