Greenwood head coach Justin Boser enters his third year with the school. After taking a team that previously just won three games across two seasons in 2021-2022 to 6-6 in 2023, the Woodmen took a step back in the win-loss column, finishing 2024 at 4-8. Despite the record, Greenwood managed to compete for a sectional championship, losing to Martinsville by just four points in 2024.

We were at summer practice this morning in Greenwood, and here are three reasons why the Woodmen could be even better in 2025.

A key returning starter for Greenwood is running back [player_tooltip player_id='1182884' first='Gunner' last='Ruppert'], an all-state selection who rushed for 1,660 yards and 19 touchdowns as a junior. Ruppert holds a bunch of small school offers from teams like Wabash, St. Francis, and Defiance, but a strong senior year could change that for the better. Although he is built like a wide receiver, Rupert is a tough, rugged ballcarrier who lowers his shoulder on contact and is a great finisher. He loves to run over defenders and displays good burst and vision. Keep an eye on Benjamin Hommell, a 2027 prospect and multi-sport athlete. He had 14 catches for 365 yards and 4 touchdowns last season, and his production is likely to go up this fall.

Class of 2026 offensive lineman Carson Andreas is described by the staff as the team's most valuable player. Along with his abilities as a run blocker, he is effective at buying time for [player_tooltip player_id='1234581' first='Ayden' last='Houseman'], who returns as the starting quarterback. Andreas can anchor the Woodmen on defense, takes good angles to ballcarriers and can be a stout run defender who can hold the point, but his more natural and comfortable position is on offense where he is a ferocious mauler in the run game who can run his feet on contact and takes defenders for a ride. Keep an eye on rising senior offensive lineman Andrew Vornheder, who is coming off an injury. The lean and tall 6-foot-5, 250-pound right tackle has good height, length, ankle size and flexion, and has good foot speed and get-off.

Greenwood has a stout group of linebackers coming back for 2025: Ethan Lobb, Tyson Jones, and junior James Hurley, with Lobb leading them. Lobb is a tough and physical football player with great instincts and a nose for the ball. With the ability to shed, thump and knock back ballcarriers, Lobb is a huge returning starter. He is also a very physical in-line blocker at fullback, where he can land some big hits and create plenty of open lanes for Ruppert.
