The Holdenville Wolverines were ready to take the next step as a program in 2024. And with the split in Class 2A, it opened the door for more teams to truly compete for a state championship. Holdenville was a top ten team in our preseason rankings last year but they still had to prove it on the field. It didn't take long for them to do just that. They got blowout shutout victories to start the season against Wewoka and Okemah. They beat North Rock Creek to get a bit of a statement win to wrap up non-district play. They continued to roll when district play began. The closest game in the month of October was a 10-point win over Beggs. In week nine, they would host Davis in a showdown for the district championship. The Wolverines got the best of the Wolves that night. They put Davis in a hole in the first half and held on for the win in the second half. It was one of the more memorable Holdenville wins in recent memory. They closed out the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record and they were district champions. Holdenville beat Luther in the first round for their first playoff win in nearly two decades. But the dream season came to an end in the quarterfinals, where they lost to Colcord. It was still a memorable season. And in the three seasons prior to head coach David Barker taking over, Holdenville had three total wins combined. In Barker's first three seasons, they've won a combined 27 games. The arrow is pointed up in a major way.

2025 OUTLOOK

The Wolverines might have jumped up and surprised some people in 2024 but they'll have more of a spotlight on them as they go into the 2025 football season. They come into this year as a borderline top five team and it might not take long before they crack the top five. Offensively, the Wolverines bring back nine starters from last year's unit that averaged just over 35 points per game. At this time last year, Holdenville brought back just four starters heading into the 2024 season so the fact that they have nine coming back this year is a very positive sign. And with Holdenville's heavy run-game with an emphasis on misdirection and pulling, having players that have that kind of experience is a big bonus. The conversation starts with the triggerman at quarterback. Having QB1 returning for his second season as a starter will help. They do have to replace one of the best running backs in Class 2A-2 so new players will need to step up. Defensively, the Wolverines bring back seven starters on that side of the ball. They gave up a little over 10 points per game last season and they could end up being a little better in 2025. And when you look at Holdenville's schedule, it sets up for the Wolverines to get off to another fast start and there's a very solid chance that they are unbeaten again when they roll into week nine. They'll have to go on the road to face district foe and defending state champion Davis. All eyes will be on that match-up and will be a big sign as to whether or not the Wolverines can make that run in November and really contend for the state title in 2025.

Junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1716194' first='Abe' last='Gomez'] returns to run this unique offense in his second season as QB1 of the Wolverines. Last year, Gomez enjoyed a breakout season, finishing the year with over 800 yards on the ground and 15 touchdowns. The 1-2 punch of Gomez and Henderson made Holdenville incredibly hard to slow down in 2025. But Gomez needs a new running mate. But regardless of who steps up at that position, the fact that Gomez is coming into this year with a season of experience makes him even more dangerous to defend. He could end up expanding his overall production this season. He also was productive on the defensive side of the ball in 2024.

Senior offensive and defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1348789' first='Alyc' last='Harjo'] returns for another season where he will anchor both sides of the Holdenville line of scrimmage. But there is no doubt that Harjo is the most valuable on the offensive side of that line of scrimmage. Holdenville uses misdirection on almost every single snap. They are going to run the football and pull their linemen and have them coming from all directions. Harjo's experience and athletic ability make him a very valuable part of this offense. When the Holdenville offensive line is working together, it's going to set the Wolverines up for success. And it doesn't matter who ends up with the ball, they are going to get positive yards.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1716196' first='Wyatt' last='Seeley'] could be stepping into a big position this season. Last year, Seeley finished with nearly 550 yards and a handful of touchdowns on the ground. He also started at linebacker and was among the team's leaders in tackles with nearly 100 on the season. Last year, he was incredibly valuable to Holdenville on the defensive side of the ball. But with Henderson gone, the Wolverines need a new running back to step up as the running mate for Gomez in the Holdenville backfield. Seeley is going to get his fair share of opportunities and he could end up having a breakout season on the offensive side of the ball, turning him into one of the better two-way players in 2A-2.

2025 SCHEDULE

Sept. 5th - Wewoka
- Holdenville will once again open up the regular season with a match-up against Wewoka. The Wolverines have had Wewoka's number over the last three seasons. They lost three straight from 2019-2021 but in the last three years, it hasn't been remotely close. Holdenville has outscored them 175-0.
Sept. 12th - AT Okemah
- In week two, Holdenville goes on the road to face Okemah. It'll be the first of three straight road games. But last season, the Wolverines finally snapped a losing streak that had been plaguing Holdenville. Prior to last year's 68-0 victory, they had lost the last nine in the series.
Sept. 19th - AT North Rock Creek
- The Wolverines wrap up non-district play with a road game against North Rock Creek. Last season, the Wolverines won their third straight in this series when they beat North Rock Creek 22-13. And this year, NRC will probably look pretty different after losing a D1 signee to graduation.
Sept. 26th - AT Coalgate
- District play kicks off with Holdenville's third consecutive game away from home. They'll travel to face Coalgate in week four to begin district play. The Wolverines beat Coalgate 42-12 last season and it was their third straight win in the series and the fifth in the last six meetings.
Oct. 3rd - Tishomingo
- Holdenville finally returns home after nearly a month of away games. They host Tishomingo in week five and this is another recent series that has not been all that competitive in the last three years. Holdenville shut out Tishomingo 46-0 last season and have now won three in a row in the series.
Oct. 10th - AT Beggs
- The second half of the regular season starts with yet another road game. Holdenville travels to Beggs in week six. The Wolverines beat Beggs 24-14 last season. Prior to last year, these two teams hadn't met on the gridiron in 15 years. Beggs will look pretty different with a first year head coach.
Oct. 16th - Dibble
- On a Fall Break Thursday night, the Wolverines will welcome in Dibble. Dibble was another new district opponent for Holdenville last season. Prior to last year, they had no previous meetings in recent memory. The Wolverines had no problems in their first meeting, they won 38-20.
Oct. 24th - Community Christian
- In week eight, Holdenville will play their final home game of the regular season when Community Christian comes to town. The Wolverines beat the Royals 22-3 in their meeting last year. It would snap a three-game losing streak in the series. Holdenville will be hopeful this isn't the last home game of 2025.
Oct. 31st - AT Davis
- All eyes will be on this Halloween night clash when Holdenville goes on the road to face off with Davis. Holdenville beat Davis head to head and captured the district title. The Wolves got the ultimate prize as they went on to win the state title. These are hands down the two favorites for the district crown.
Nov. 7th - AT Comanche
- The regular season comes to an end with a road trip to Comanche in week ten. Following their showdown with defending champ Davis, Holdenville will square off with Comanche. Last season, the Wolverines rolled to a 40-7 victory before heading into the playoffs as district champs.

NOTABLE

As mentioned earlier, Holdenville is not that far removed from winless seasons and winning a combined three games before head coach David Barker took over in 2022. So the fact that they've gone 27-7 in the last three years, won the district title and snapped a playoff losing streak is something to be proud of. But now is not the time to settle. Holdenville's 38-14 win over Luther in the first round snapped a five-game losing streak in the first round. It was their first playoff victory since 2005. But now, the Wolverines are ready to take that next step. They don't want to just win one playoff game. Like every other team in the state right now, they have dreams of playing for a state championship. That's only happened once in program history and it was back in 1964. They beat Lindsay to capture the Class A championship that year. Since that championship season, Holdenville has made it to the semifinal round just one time and that came in 1999. The Wolverines expect to make it back to the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year this fall but they won't be satisfied with just making it or winning one game and bowing out in the quarterfinals again.
