At this time last year, Davis was going into the season as the number two team in Class 2A-2. And we mentioned in our preview that Davis could very well start with a 1-2 or 0-3 record because of the tough non-district schedule but that didn't make them lesser as a 2A-2 contender. They certainly lived up to that statement. Davis started the season with an 0-3 record. They finished the season as state champions. Davis would fall to Pauls Valley, Sulphur and Plainview in the first three weeks. All three teams spent the majority of the season in the 3A top ten, with Sulphur playing for the 3A title. Davis would bounce back in a major way. They would win five straight games, setting up a week nine showdown with Holdenville, in a game that would decide the district championship. After falling in a first half hole, Davis would rally in the second half but it wasn't enough as they lost 22-15. The Wolves would finish second in the district race. They beat Hennessey in the first round and then had to go on the road to face Adair. They would get out of northeastern Oklahoma with a 3-point win. They beat Stroud in the semifinals and that set up a championship showdown with top-ranked Vian. The Wolves would control the ball, take advantage of rare Vian miscues and had a key special teams touchdown. Combine all of those things and that equaled a 28-18 victory, to capture the team's seventh state championship in school history and the first one in a decade. The Wolves expected to contend for the gold ball in 2024. They took the road less traveled to get there but that made walking off that field in Edmond all the more sweeter. Now, they look to defend that crown.

2025 OUTLOOK

The Davis Wolves would capture their seventh state championship in school history and the first in a decade last season. Now, they'll try to defend it with a relatively new roster. Only four starters will return on the offensive side of the ball. Now that's a small number but when you're a flexbone offense, it's all about the quarterback and they'll have a third year starter at the position, making that offense hum. But everywhere else on offense, the Wolves will need new players to step up, specifically at the running back position as they lost one of their top rushers from last season. Defensively, Davis is going to bring back five starters on that side of the ball but there is a lot of reason for optimism with this group. They will bring back five starters but there were a lot of players that got reps and meaningful minutes on defense and both sides of the ball for that matter. So those “new” starters aren't going to be coming into this season with no experience under their belt. And the schedule remains the same. They open up the season against three teams from Class 3A that all expect to be playoff teams with Sulphur expecting to make another trip to the state championship game. So it'll be a challenge. We don't anticipate Davis starting 0-3 again this season but as they showed last year, it's not about how you start, it's about how you finish. They came up short in the district title race but we have the Wolves as the favorites to win the district. Which could set up a potentially interesting clash in November. If Davis and Vian both win their respective district title as they're favored, they would actually meet in the semifinals instead of the state title game. But we're a long way from talking about a championship rematch. The Wolves are focused on defending that state title, one game at a time.

One of the biggest questions we have about Davis is how they will replace Brenden Rawls after his workhorse performance at the running back position. The answer is with multiple guys and sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1702587' first='Creed' last='Rogers'] is one of the guys they expect to take that next step this season. Rogers would earn playing time last season and he would end up playing meaningful minutes throughout the 2024 season as a freshman. Rawls was a guy that Davis could hand the ball to and almost be guaranteed 4-5 yards, if not more. They'll have to replace that consistent production. It won't be with one guy but maybe Rogers is a guy that ends up breaking out this fall.

Junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1324250' first='Dax' last='Owens'] was one of the best players in the state last season so we'll just start with that blanket statement. Owens was just a sophomore and ran the flexbone offense to perfection last fall. He would finish with well over 1,600 yards and 21 touchdowns on the ground. He also threw for (yes he can throw even though he runs the flexbone) over 500 yards and eight touchdowns. Owens also had one of the biggest moments in last year's state title game. He returned a kick for a touchdown that ultimately put the game out of reach. And the scary part for the rest of Class 2A-2 is he's just going into his junior season. He has two more years to terrorize opponents.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1702589' first='Gage' last='Copenbarger'] is going to be a name to look out for this season. The Davis coaches are excited about his potential and what he could bring to both sides of the ball. We might see Copenbarger's greatest impact on the defensive side of the ball this season. He's going to be a standout in the Davis secondary and can be moved around and play a few different roles. And the same can be said for him on the offensive side of the ball. If the Wolves lose Owens for any time, Copenbarger is expected to be the guy they would run in at the quarterback position. But he's also listed as an overall athlete so he's another example of that versatile player that they can plug in at different times.

Having Owens back at quarterback will certainly help this Davis offense but they can't run the flexbone without a strong offensive line. Junior offensive and defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1702591' first='Jacob' last='Silva'] is one of the starters returning from last season's run to the state championship. Having that experience back will certainly help the Wolves as they go into the 2025 football season. And as we always say with an offensive lineman that is returning in a year where the team will have new starters, the Wolves will lean on a player like Silva and his experience to help some of those new faces along. Silva and the rest of this offensive line will set the tone for the flexbone attack in 2025.

Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1702588' first='Teyten' last='Stewart'] is another playmaker in the 2028 class to keep an eye on as the Wolves move into this season. Stewart will play significant minutes on both sides of the ball. While his playmaking at the wide receiver position might not be what some other schools have because of the flexbone offense, Stewart was still incredibly valuable last season. Looking back at the state championship game, Stewart made a terrific catch that set up what ended up being the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter. That was the perfect example of a player taking advantage of when his number was called. The biggest stage in the state and Stewart made the play.

2025 SCHEDULE

Sept. 5th - Pauls Valley
- The 2025 regular season will begin with a home game against Pauls Valley. Last season, the Panthers would beat the Wolves 31-14 and that was their second straight win in this series. Prior to that, Davis had won five straight against the Panthers. Pauls Valley will have a first year head coach.
Sept. 12th - Sulphur
- It's the annual rivalry clash between Davis and Sulphur and the Wolves will host the Bulldogs this season. Sulphur beat the Wolves 42-7 last season and they've had the advantage in this series over the last decade. The Bulldogs have won eight of the last ten meetings with the Wolves.
Sept. 19th - AT Plainview
- The non-district slate will wrap up in week three with a road game against Plainview. Davis fell to Plainview 23-13 last season. Prior to that, these two hadn't met in 15 years. They were district opponents in 2008 and 2009. The Indians will come into this season with a new head coach.
Sept. 26th - AT Dibble
- District play will begin on the road, in week four, against Dibble. Last season was their first meeting in recent memory after the two teams became new district foes. Davis would win that first meeting, beating Dibble 42-15. This year, they hope to win again to kick off pursuit of a possible district title.
Oct. 3rd - Beggs
- Beggs was another new district opponent for Davis in 2024. Despite these two teams being pretty consistent playoff contenders over the last decade, they had never met prior to last season. Davis would win a close and competitive 28-22 contest. Beggs will have a new head coach this fall.
Oct. 10th - Tishomingo
- The second half of the regular season will begin at home, against Tishomingo. The Wolves have dominated this series over the last two decades. They have won 17 straight games in the series, including last year's 42-8 victory. After two years of not playing in 2022 and 2023, they were district foes again.
Oct. 16th - AT Coalgate
- The Wolves will go on the road to face Coalgate in week seven. These two teams have met in district play every year since 2006. Last season, Davis beat Coalgate 56-18. The Wolves have won five straight in the series and they're also winners of 17 of the last 18 meetings.
Oct. 24th - AT Comanche
- In week eight, Davis will go on the road to face Comanche in their final road game of the regular season. The Wolves beat Comanche 42-7 last season. These two teams became district opponents for the first time since they met every year from 2018-2021. The Wolves have won six straight in the series.
Nov. 1st - Holdenville
- All eyes will be on this match-up as Davis will host Holdenville in week nine. Last season, the Wolves fell on the road in a head to head match-up for the district championship. The loss last season also snapped a three-game winning streak against the Wolverines. This is definitely a game to circle on the schedule.
Nov. 7th - Community Christian
- The regular season will come to a close at home against Community Christian in week ten. The Wolves would beat the Royals 45-21 in last season's meeting. Prior to last year's meeting, these two teams met in the playoffs in back to back seasons in 2020 and 2021.

Because of the loss to Holdenville in the regular season, Davis had to take one of the more historic roads to a state championship in recent memory. We talked about how Davis went from an 0-3 start, a 6-4 regular season record to state champions. But the run in the playoffs was something that you don't see very often. They beat Hennessey in the first round and then faced Adair, Stroud and Vian in three consecutive weeks. What did all three of those teams have in common? They were undefeated prior to running into the Wolves. Davis went on the road and knocked off Adair. They met Stroud in the semifinals and handed them their one and only loss. And that set up the championship clash with a Vian team that had been on top of Class 2A-2 all season. And as we mentioned earlier, Davis responded by playing a borderline perfect game, taking advantage of Vian miscues, big plays in special teams and controlling the football to capture their seventh state title in school history. The road to that gold ball was about as hard as it gets but you certainly can't say that Davis didn't earn state championship number seven in 2024.
