After pausing for a month for the 2026, 2027, and 2028 rankings updates, it's time to jump back into our county-by-county deep dives, highlighting the best players from across the Raleigh-Durham area. We're on the defensive side of the ball now and I'm looking at the top interior defensive linemen in Durham and Orange County.

When we first evaluated Clark almost four years ago, I had him pegged as a future star left tackle. However, he quickly showed a natural ability at defensive tackle that was hard to ignore. Every year, he's gotten bigger, stronger, and faster, and looks every bit the part of a Power Four recruit. The 18.5 tackles for loss are evidence of that.

Edwards has one of the highest upsides of any interior pass-rusher in the state as he hasn't really come close to his ceiling as a player. He's a pass-rushing specialist with the quickness to split outside in bigger packages and the power to slide down to nose in short-yardage situations. His eight sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss are among the best in the state for a returning interior player.

Smith forms one-half of one of the state's most feared defensive tackle duos, and he was extremely productive for the position. He doesn't just eat up space, he can get after ball-carriers and make tackles too, racking up 39 tackles as a sophomore. I think he'll take another step as a pass-rusher this season, which should help him improve as an overall threat.

Cedar Ridge didn't have a ton of team success in 2024, but Walker was a bright spot, lining up all over the defensive line and forcing frequent double-teams. I think he'll ultimately bulk up a bit more in the weight room and end up playing primarily on the inside right now, but he's a scary pass-rusher from anywhere. He can also shoot gaps and create havoc in the running game.

Ortega is a massive run-stuffer and he uses his body to eat up space and take down ball-carriers. He excels at holding interior blockers at bay before actually making the stop. He has some upside as a pass-rusher and he has some real power moves and surprising quickness for a big man.
