We're well into the offseason, and we're keeping things going ahead of spring workouts and summer practices. In a new series that will run concurrently with some of our other cornerstone content, like my community film room series or Matt Morrow's county-by-county Deep Dives, we're looking at what some of our 2028 players (both ranked and unranked) did as freshmen. After hitting the the running backs from other areas of the state, we're looking at the I-40 corridor with five guys in Raleigh and Greensboro.

Evans is a huge back, especially as a freshman, weighing well over 200 pounds. But despite his size, he doesn't seek out contact, instead using his elusiveness to avoid would-be tacklers and get to the open field. He's a homerun threat with plenty of speed to both get to the edge and take it to the house and he's a guy we're watching closely as he transitions to sophomore year.

Ziglar is as explosive an athlete as you'll find at the running back position. But his impact isn't just limited to running the ball. He caught five passes for over 150 yards last season and had a kickoff return for a touchdown that ended up being the key play in a win over Apex. ZIglar has homerun speed and ability were on full display to start his freshman year. Now fully healthy, Ziglar's ceiling is high in 2025.

Pagan didn't have a ton of gaping holes to run through as a freshman, but showed a tenacity and toughness that impressed us. He has good size for his age and he does a good job of getting up the field and holding onto the ball. We're hoping he has more opportunities to break some big runs as a sophomore because we didn't get many chances to see what he can do when he gets to the second level.

Page struggled to stay in games last year, but when the Pirates were in positive game scripts, Poole was excellent, running for 268 of his 381 total rushing yards in the team's three wins. Poole has a lot of shiftiness and contact balance in his running style. He gets upfield and knows how to maximize his yardage on each run.

Stroud didn't get much varsity playing time while behind one of our favorite seniors, but he was productive on junior varsity and did get some game time at the varsity level for the reigning 4A state champions. He's a bruising runner who has great pad level and loves contact. Grimsley has another running back coming down the pipe, and Stroud looks the part of a future star.
