Only one 2026 Iowa quarterback has announced his college commitment. That was Underwood's [player_tooltip player_id='1221934' first='Garrett' last='Luett'], who is pledged to Iowa baseball.

The holdup is not for a lack of talent. The signal callers in this state can play. It's more that the transfer portal at the next level puts many of them on the back burner when it comes to colleges filling the position on their rosters.

I scouted DeGroote during the Class 5A final four at the UNI-Dome in November. The junior signal caller's gritty play helped the Tigers knock off rival Dowling Catholic in the semifinals. DeGroote stands out for his athleticism and strong arm. He can gain yards with his legs but more often utilizes his mobility by moving the pocket and making plays off schedule. DeGroote throws with accuracy on the move and spins a nice deep ball. He completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 1,816 yards and 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He added 212 yards and four scores rushing.

I scouted Rettig several times during the season. He delivered all season and improved with time. Rettig is unorthodox, as you can see while watching his junior highlight video. That's meant as a compliment. He delivers the ball from various arm angles based on pressure and alignments. It stresses the defense as does his scrambling. It's like trying to contain an oil spill. Rettig completed 73.1 percent of his throws for 2,719 yards and 32 touchdowns and only three interceptions. He added 486 yards and six scores.

Kampman, the son of former Iowa and NFL defensive lineman Aaron Kampman, has waited his turn to play varsity quarterback at Solon, a program usually flush with talent. While biding his time, he used his skills to help at defensive back and receiver. I watched him lock up guys as a cornerback. Maybe he ends up there in college, but you keep his athleticism behind center for as long as possible. Kampman shows us he could stay there during his junior highlight video as a true dual-threat quarterback. His speed stands out as does his smooth throwing motion and accuracy.

When it comes to developing student-athletes for the next level, Waverly-Shell Rock ranks among the best in the state. Schipper is part of the next group in line for the Go-Hawks, which leaned heavily on its run game in 2024. Athleticism stands out as a strength for Schipper. His ball placement on deep throws is sharp. As we can see watching his junior highlight video, Schipper hits receivers in stride so they can gain yards after catches. He operates effectively on play-action, selling the fake well.

Also a starter on the Yellow Jackets varsity hoops team, Fujii is an excellent athlete. He threw for 10 touchdowns and led his team in rushing scores last season. His junior highlight video reveals a very fluid and easy throwing motion. Fujii is proficient running play-action with the flexibility to operate under center or in the shotgun. Fujii shows good footwork and sets up well when dropping back. He carries the ball like a running back with sharp cuts, strong vision and skills to make defenders miss in space.

Pierce stood out as a bright spot for a team that won just two games in 2024. A strong arm serves as the foundation for his success. Pierce can chuck it deep without a lot of effort. During his junior highlight video, we see that and much more. Operating out of the shotgun, Pierce zips the ball into tight windows and leads his receivers. He looks comfortable under center, too. While not a runner, he's also not a statue. Pierce can evade the rush by moving the pocket. He sells play-action well and is accurate on the move.
