The Class of 2027 rankings received a winter update this week, with our list of prospects nearly doubling. In the latest update, the rankings went from a top 15 to a new “Sophomore 75.”

Below is my breakdown of the sophomore gunslingers!

[player_tooltip player_id='1197483' first='Braylon' last='Bingham'] (@braylonbing), Pleasantville - 6'2" 180 lbs

Overall: 29 | QB: 1

Pleasantville's [player_tooltip player_id='1197483' first='Braylon' last='Bingham'] may be listed as a QB on our rankings, but his overall athleticism is already starting to garner attention from some of the high-level FBS programs in the state. As a sophomore Braylon threw for 1,749 yards, 23 touchdowns, 166 QBR, and rushed for 368 yards with an additional eight touchdowns on the ground. You usually don't want to associate QBs with interceptions, but Braylon's defensive play saw him emerge as one of the top ball-hawks in his class with 6 picks (one INT return for TD) to go with his 49.5 tackles and a fumble recovery. I was very impressed with Braylon as a passer, displaying a nearly effortless motion that seemed to send the ball flying out of his hands. He processes the game quickly, showing that he can read defenses and move through his progressions when his first option isn't available. Once he locks into a target, Bingham is quick to get the ball out with a precise, accurate throw to all levels of the field.

Overall: 38 | QB: 2

Waukee Northwest has something great brewing, with QB [player_tooltip player_id='1204436' first='Mack' last='Heitland'] set to remain under center for the next couple of seasons. Heitland had a solid breakout season in which he threw for 1,883 yards and 28 touchdowns with an impressive 194.3 QBR. Heitland is a skilled passer who showed nice accuracy and timing on his passes with excellent placement on his deep passes. Mack also had some nice throws in which he layered the throw over the defender's head to drop it right into the receiver's hands. Look for Mack to continue rising as he becomes more settled in the Wolve's offense.

Overall: 45 | QB: 3

It was not a bad year as QB1 for sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1621125' first='AJ' last='Harder'], who led the Trojans to the Class A state championship. On top of a ring, Harder also led all sophomores in passing with 2,882 yards and 29 touchdowns, with 116 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground. Harder was efficient in leading the Trojan offense, showing that he could find ways to carve up defenses. He can lob the ball downfield to connect on deep passes or fit the ball into a tight window between the seams. He has good speed and spiral on his passes, with nice placement and timing when it hits his receiver. Good footwork and poise in the pocket. Big-time player with a championship pedigree already... get after this guy asap!

Overall: 50 | QB: 4

Urbandale's [player_tooltip player_id='1197442' first='Landon' last='Rinnan'] took the next step in his development in year two as QB1. Rinnan threw for 1,062 yards and eight touchdowns while also showing that he can be a dual threat with 632 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Landon does an excellent job extending plays with his legs and can stay focused downfield when he spills out of the pocket. As a runner, Landon is a physical runner with a powerful base that keeps his legs driving through contact to stay upright, fighting for extra yardage. Excited to see what this offseason and junior year have in store for Landon!

DCG's 2027 group could be a very special one with a solid nucleus of young players, including QB [player_tooltip player_id='1198821' first='Chase' last='Engel']. Chase ended his sophomore season completing 51% of his passes for 1,256 yards and seven touchdowns. Watching Chase's sophomore tape, I was impressed with how "simple" he keeps the game. In a time when QBs will look for the slightest bit of pressure to leave the pocket, Chase showed that he can remain calm and poised as he moves through his reads. He's definitely not stone-footed, showing he can maneuver around the pass-rush while staying locked in downfield. Engel throws a quick, accurate strike that gets to his target fast and in stride. Good footwork. There are still a few areas to work on, but this is definitely a prospect to start buying stock in!

Overall: 58 | QB: 6

Although Hunter mostly ran the ball last season, the upside he showed at the Stock Up showcase and the chance to take over the QB1 spot this season have me buying stock now. With his tough, physical running style, Kauffman has already shown us the ground part of being a dual-threat. Hunter's bigger 6'1" and 210-pound frame allows him to absorb and bounce off contact with the lower body strength to stay upright, fighting for more yards. At the showcase, Hunter showed off his strong upper body with his rifle for an arm to launch the ball deep and zip passes into tight windows.

[player_tooltip player_id='1621129' first='Jackson' last='Verschoor'] , Woodbury Central - 6'0" 190 lbs

Overall: 62 | QB: 7

In his first year starting for the Wildcats, quarterback Jackson Vershoor quietly had a great season that saw him lead his team to the playoff quarterfinals. He finished near the top of the sophomore passing yard standings with 1,821 yards, 17 passing touchdowns, and a 139.8 QBR. Although there were some raw aspects to his game, I was really impressed with his ability to read defenses and throw with anticipation. He had several throws where he placed the ball perfectly just as the receiver broke into the passing window, catching them in stride. Very mobile with the ability to extend plays with his legs or take the ball and run it himself, resulting in his 373 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Great athlete who is only starting to scratch the surface.
