The history of athletics is filled with memorable names. They're people that perform well, literally have a unique name or it's a combination of the two. Babe Ruth would be an example of the latter.

It's the offseason around here. We need to come up with something to entertain ourselves. How about an all-name team comprised of student-athletes expected to play high school football this Fall in Iowa?

What you are reading will be the second installment in our quest to put this team together. Periodically between now and the end of the season in November, we'll post a list of candidates. Then we can choose the all-name team from all of those posts. And by “we”, I mean me.

Nominations are accepted. Share any interesting stories about the origin of the name is welcomed

Let's get after it with Round 2...

Rhett Butler, '27, ATH, Davenport North - The sophomore saw time on offense, defense and special teams for the Wildcats in 2024. Butler, who shares a name with a famous fictional character, should see a bigger role next season.

[player_tooltip player_id='1615329' first='Deacon' last='Caspers'], '26, RB, Charles City - Caspers has a memorable name and a lot of game. He 1,365 yards (5.1 YPC) and 14 touchdowns as a junior in '24.

[player_tooltip player_id='1466768' first='Kinnick' last='Geers'], '26, ATH, West Marshall - The versatile Geers rushed for two touchdowns, caught three scores, returned two kickoffs for TDs, collected 31 solo tackles (2.5 TFL) and intercepted eight passes as a junior last season.

Landyn Schoenrock, '26, QB, Riverside - Not to be confused with a Flintstones character, Schoenrock threw for eight touchdowns and ran for another last year. He had a yabba-dabba-doo time.

[player_tooltip player_id='1614184' first='Judd' last='Jirovsky'], '26, QB, Grundy Center - Jirovsky's name rolls off the tongue kind of like he rolled through opposing defenses in '24. He threw for 25 touchdowns against just one interception and rushed for 18 more scores. He picked off eight passes on defense.

Gustavo Gomez, '26, FB/LB, West Hancock - All-gas Gomez rushed for 805 yards (9.9 YPC) and nine touchdowns last season. Three of his four receptions when for scores. He registered 67.5 tackles and an interception on defense.

Hutch Howard, '26, QB, Interstate 35 - Alliteration plays a big role in producing memorable names. While I don't want to "cheat" by using it too much, Hutch Howard is too good. He also tossed nine TDs last season.

Rowen Atkinson, '26, QB/DB, Wapello - As mentioned, alliteration fuels inclusion on the all-name team. So, too, does sharing name with someone famous. This Rowen Atkinson threw for six touchdowns and intercepted three passes as a junior.

[player_tooltip player_id='1619921' first='Heavon' last='Knox'], '26, WR/S, Osklaloosa - This is Heavon and it's Iowa. The name brings to mind a famous song. Knox caught 34 passes for 550 yards and four touchdowns. He kicked in 18.5 tackles (2.0 TFL) and intercepted a pass, and housed a punt return.
