In the world of high school football, running backs are often measured by their ability to produce big plays and sustain drives. While total yardage and touchdowns can tell part of the story, there's a particular stat that highlights a running back's efficiency better than most: yards per carry. Averaging over 10 yards per carry is an incredible feat that demonstrates a player's ability to maximize every opportunity they get on the field. To ensure the sample size reflects consistent performance and not just a few breakout runs, we've focused on players who carried the ball at least seven times per game. These athletes aren't just good — they're redefining what it means to be efficient in the backfield.

Landon Ward, a standout at Willcox, was efficient every single time he touched the ball in 2024. Standing at 5'11" and weighing 155 pounds, his incredibly long legs allow him to really stride out when he gets some grass in front of him, making it hard for defenders to track him down. In a game against Tanque Verde, Ward rushed for 179 yards on just 14 carries, averaging 12.8 yards per carry, and scored four touchdowns while also returning a kickoff 90 yards for another score. The following week, Ward elevated his game even further, rushing for an astounding 252 yards on just seven carries against Palo Verde — an average of 36 yards per carry — and scoring four touchdowns. Ward's quick twitch and ability to turn nothing into something has made him a prime example of what it means to be an efficient and dynamic high school running back.

[player_tooltip player_id='954413' first='Elijah' last='Harris'] was an unstoppable force for Arizona Lutheran Academy in 2024, combining vision, agility, and top-tier speed to create big plays week after week. At 5'11" and 190 pounds, Harris showed great patience, waiting for gaps to open, and the explosiveness to burst through them when the opportunity presented itself. Harris had a stellar season, rushing for 1,274 yards at an astonishing 13 yards per carry, easily one of the most productive and reliable backs in the state. He had three games in which he averaged over 30 yards per carry, showing just how explosive and game-changing he was with every touch. Recognized as the Region Offensive Player of the Year for 2A Gila, Harris's performances consistently elevated his team. Whether breaking off long runs, slipping past defenders in tight spaces, or stepping up when his team needed a spark, he consistently showed why he was one of the most electrifying players of the 2024 season.

Dominic Hawkins, a sophomore at AZ Compass Prep, is quickly making a name for himself as one of the state's most dynamic athletes with the ball in his hands. A thousand-yard rusher, he also added another 710 yards receiving. Any way he can get the ball in his hands in open space is dangerous for the other team. Hawkins is so shifty that the first person to get their hands on him is rarely able to bring him to the ground. Hawkins delivered a breakout game against Heritage Academy Gateway, where he rushed for an impressive 275 yards and scored four touchdowns. Averaging nearly 20 yards per carry in that game, Hawkins played a huge part in keeping his team undefeated. Over this past season, Hawkins scored 35 total touchdowns, tied for second-most among all Arizona high school players. Dominic Hawkins's strong sophomore year shows he has the potential to keep improving and becoming an even bigger threat in the seasons ahead.

Thomas Foilefutu, a junior at Tonopah Valley, really broke out this year as they made a run to the semifinals. Standing at 6'1" and weighing 215 pounds, Foilefutu's combination of physicality and speed has made him a force to be reckoned with on the field. In the 2024 season, Foilefutu rushed for 1,184 yards and scored an impressive 31 total touchdowns — tied for the conference lead. Highlighting just how dangerous he can be with limited touches, he reached 100+ yards five times on less than 10 carries. Foilefutu didn't just excel as a runner; he added 925 receiving yards, showing how much of a difference-maker he was no matter where he lined up on the field. His ability to deliver in critical moments and dominate across multiple phases of the game makes him an invaluable asset to the Phoenix. With another year to continue developing his already impressive skill set, he's set to build on this strong 2024 season.

[player_tooltip player_id='368966' first='Sebastian' last='Lopez'] has been an unbelievably electrifying dual-threat quarterback, leading Bisbee's offense. In the 2024 season, Lopez showed off his skills both in the air and on the ground, throwing for 2,466 yards and 19 touchdowns while rushing for 1,236 yards and 15 more scores. So hard to bring to the ground, he has a great feel for the rush and doesn't hesitate to use his quickness to take off down the field. It wasn't just the offense that was fueled by Lopez's big plays, he was everywhere on defense too. He finished the year with 92 total tackles and a whopping eight interceptions. His production on both sides of the ball set him apart as one of the most versatile and impactful players in Arizona.

[player_tooltip player_id='739440' first='Tait' last='Reynolds'] took an eventful offseason and rolled it right into a season filled with standout performances. At 6'4" and 205 pounds, Reynolds exemplifies versatility as an athlete, not just a football player. In his junior season, he completed 62% of his passes, throwing for 2,238 yards and 22 touchdowns while only recording 5 interceptions. On the ground, he rushed for 1,426 yards and 19 touchdowns on just 95 carries — an astonishing average of 11.1 yards per carry. His toughness with the ball in his hands is something rarely seen from a quarterback; he seemingly just wills himself to stay on his feet as defenders fall off of him. One of Reynolds' standout performances came against Red Mountain, where he threw for 224 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 128 yards and three more scores, leading his team to a 28-23 victory. Throughout the season, he reached 100+ yards both rushing and passing eight times. Reynolds' athletic talents extend beyond football. Originally committed to Arizona State University for baseball, he decommitted in June. After receiving offers from top programs including Oklahoma and Texas A&M, Reynolds committed to Clemson University, where he'll play both football and baseball.

Andres Bonilla, one of five Buena Colts to finish with more than 750 all-purpose yards, solidified himself as one of the most explosive backs in the state during the 2024 season. Standing at 5'10" and weighing 180 pounds, Bonilla's combination of speed, agility, and vision allowed him to quickly get to the second level. Showing nice power to push through would-be tacklers, Bonilla amassed 1,505 rushing yards on 150 attempts — averaging an impressive 10.8 yards per carry — and scored 19 total touchdowns. His remarkable efficiency was highlighted during a three-game winning streak in which he rushed for 565 yards on 41 carries and scored five times on the ground. Bonilla's consistent production throughout his high school career led him to become Buena's all-time leading rusher, surpassing 4,000 career rushing yards.
