Goodrich vs. Niles (D4 Championship) Scouting Report

It was a pretty big shock for me- Goodrich outplayed Niles in just about every phase. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Good job to Goodrich for getting the job done. The first of this year's breakout stars is Jakoby.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>From the jump, he was excellent on both sides of the ball. I watched Jakoby during all of his first offensive possession. In that first possession and really throughout the game, Jakoby was extremely tough to tackle, and extremely energetic. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Throughout all four quarters, Jakoby exploded through arm tackles, juked defenders, tip-toed the sidelines, all while being a vocal leader for the team. For one, he's a sophomore starting for a State Championship winner- always an impressive feat. Second, he played a major role in the State Championship Win. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>He didn't light up the statsheet per se- 4 carries for 7 yards and 1 TD. But his blocking was what impressed me the most. Play after play, Colton was trusted to lead block, and he did a good job in that role. The one thing I'd ask Colton to improve on is his drive once he engages in a block. His best blocks, like most linemen, were his base and down blocks. Powerful first step, excellent leverage, awesome power. <br>Ameir also did great with his reach blocks and looked very agile when pulling. Again, great fundamentals all around. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>In order to be recruited this offseason, Ameir needs to work on his pass sets. I watched him for two drives and only saw a couple passing reps, but he looked pretty stiff. He also posted 3TFLs for 13 yards of lost yardage. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The matchups were there for Max, and he simply took advantage. I was surprised to see that Max was sometimes on an island out wide. Goodrich took advantage, took a couple deep shots to Max, and he was always open on those. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Defensively, Max played very, very well. The Niles WRs couldn't block him, and he made a few great tackles in space. I didn't specifically scout him for multiple drives like I did others, but he was still impossible to miss. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Offensively, he rushed for 157 yards and 2TDs on 28 carries. There were several times viewing from the press box where I was incredibly impressed with his vision. Some of the cuts inside and bounces outside were timed perfectly and exactly what Chase needed to do in order to pick up extra yardage. He wasn't as successful on offense as he usually is- only rushing for 44 yards on 9 carries. Still, he evaded some tackles and tried to say up for as long as he could when the play broke down. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Defensively, Sam was one of Niles' best. He totaled 8 tackles. What I liked most about Sam's defensive performance was his pursuit. Many Niles defenders struggled to tackle and pursue ballcarriers running down the sideline, but not Sam. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I hope someone from a D3 or NAIA program sends an offer to Sam. He totaled 12 tackles and reacted incredibly quickly to every inside run. There was one play on the goal line where Goodrich tried to QB sneak, but Paul launched himself into the pile and helped prevent a score. He was one of, if not the only Niles player that I saw consistently evade or shed Goodrich blockers. He matched Goodrich's physicality, and played pretty well on defense.
