NEWBERRY | Up until a few weeks ago, Newberry was running a two-quarterback system with [player_tooltip player_id='1267234' first='Kenton' last='Caldwell'] and Bryce Satterwhite. They were alternating series and sharing snaps, but Satterwhite also plays defense, punts and is a force on special teams.

The Bulldogs have given Caldwell most of the reps the last couple of games and the junior has responded magnificently. In a 45-20 victory over Keenan on Friday night, Caldwell accounted for five total touchdowns in just a snap over three quarters of action and has Newberry in a position to clinch a region title next week against Swansea.

“He does that about every week,” Newberry coach Cedrick Jeter sort of dead panned. “Once again, he doesn't get a lot of publicity but he's going to keep doing his thing. He's a great player.”

It took Caldwell all of one snap to show he was ready for the Raiders. On the first play from scrimmage, Caldwell faked the handoff, slipped around the left end and sprinted untouched 53 yards for a touchdown. It was just foreshadowing what was going to come.

Caldwell finished his evening with 221 passing yards and three touchdowns and added 93 yards rushing on nine carries and two scores.

“I came out ready. I knew it was going to be a big game. I just put it all on the field. Glad I played well,” Caldwell said. “We knew we were the more talented team, so we came out with the victory.”

Caldwell has a vast array of weapons at his disposal. [player_tooltip player_id='816735' first='Jamel' last='Howse'], a 6-foot-4 matchup problem in the Bulldogs attack, is a recent South Carolina commitment for the 2026 Class. He finished with six receptions for 93 yards with Gamecocks tight end coach Shawn Elliott in attendance.

But it doesn't stop there. Running back [player_tooltip player_id='473022' first='BJ' last='Jones'] ran for 54 yards and caught two passes, including a 9-yard touchdown. Cash Brown caught three passes for 47 yards and a 21-yard TD reception. [player_tooltip player_id='1113710' first='CJ' last='Earl'] did a little bit of everything with a fumble recovery on defense and a 39-yard touchdown catch. [player_tooltip player_id='1254060' first='Isaiah' last='Glymph'] controlled the secondary from his free safety spot and caught a 6-yard TD pass from Satterwhite.

And Calab Levy, a Touchstone Energy North-South Selection, was mostly quiet for the evening.

“Our offense is amazing. We have a hard running back like Jones, a tall commit like Howse and a bunch of guys that are speedy and can catch. It's special to have all of them,” Caldwell said.

The Newberry defense more than did their part. Keenan came in averaging 43 points over its last four games. The Raiders have a 2,000-yard passer in [player_tooltip player_id='1360203' first='Desmond' last='Washington'], a nearly 1,000-rusher in [player_tooltip player_id='1422608' first='Hunter' last='O'Neal'] plus a pair of receivers in [player_tooltip player_id='1578660' first='Tyheim' last='McNeil'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1578683' first='Nykeim' last='McNeil'] that had combined for 69 catches for 1,410 yards in the first nine games.

O'Neal had the most productive night with 109 yards rushing and three receptions for 68 yards and touchdowns rushing and receiving. [player_tooltip player_id='1578660' first='Tyheim' last='McNeil'] added 90 yards receiving and a touchdown on five catches.

The Bulldogs held them in check. Washington was never able to set his feet and throw the ball downfield like normal. He was on the run most of the evening and finished with a negative 17 yards rushing on 15 attempts.

Junior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1267311' first='Julian' last='Senn'] set the tone with a 13-yard sack on the Raiders third offensive play. Jalen Fuller batted away two passes and added two sacks. Defensive end Thomas Dewalt chased Washington all over the field. Linebacker Jarod Acosta, another Touchstone Energy North-South selection, also contributed heavily.

And that doesn't even start to mention the secondary. Glymph and Earl were fantastic, but Bran-Darius Tobe, Steven Joseph and Tank Davis all played a factor in limiting Keenan to 207 passing yards and 104 yards rushing.

“It means we're better than you guys think we are, all you publications,” Jeter said. “We played Newberry football. We're going to play hard; we're going to play physically regardless of what newspapers or what people say on social media. We're going to play our game, and all the other stuff doesn't matter.”
