Week 8 of the 2024 New Mexico High School football season is complete. Here is our eighth edition of the Weekly Whiparound, our deep dive into everything that happened on the field (Note: All 5A teams had a bye week):

Teams of the Week: Organ Mountain (6A); No Games (5A); Albuquerque Academy (4A); Roberton (3A); Texico (2A).

Organ Mountain (4-4, 3-1) started the season 0-3, extending a losing streak dating back to the middle of the 2022 season, but since that point the Knights have won four of five games and suddenly have the look of a Class 6A playoff contender. Their latest success was a 42-24 road win over Clovis, improving Organ Mountain to 3-1 in District 6A-3 (most district wins since 2016) and setting the stage for a showdown against unbeaten cross-town rival Centennial in Week 9. Dynamic Knights QB Xavier Perez rushed for 2 TD as Organ Mountain led, 15-14, in the first half. But Clovis led, 24-20, at halftime. The Knights defense held the Wildcats scoreless in the second half. Two more rushing TDs by Perez gave Organ Mountain a 35-24 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Albuquerque Academy desperately needed a victory over Manzano Saturday afternoon after dropping its first two district games to Chaparral and St. Pius X on the road. The Chargers came through with arguably its best performance of the season in an emphatic 57-26 victory over Manzano that shook up the District 4A-2 race and snapped the Monarchs' 5-game winning streak. Six-foot-5 Academy WR [player_tooltip player_id='851898' first='Gage' last='Conway'] caught 4 TD passes and booted a FG. QB [player_tooltip player_id='1369761' first='William' last='Braun'] threw for well over 300 yards and distributed the ball smartly to Conway and [player_tooltip player_id='1119328' first='Jett' last='Galles'] (82-yard catch-and-run TD).

Robertson (8-0) was tested for the first time this season as they held off crosstown rival West Las Vegas for a 28-26 victory in a back-and-forth game in front of a packed house at WLVHS. The Cardinals trailed 20-14 in the 3rd quarter before launching a long drive capped by a TD pass by senior QB Jesse James Gonzalez to take a 21-20 lead. Gonzalez connected with dynamic freshman [player_tooltip player_id='1613284' first='George' last='Smith'] for a long pass into the red zone on the final play of the 3rd quarter before rushing for the TD on the first snap of the fourth for a 28-20 lead. Smith also had a kickoff return for a TD. WLV scored on QB [player_tooltip player_id='615555' first='CJ' last='Perea']'s 3-yard TD run midway through the 4Q but was stopped on the 2-point conversion attempt and that proved to be the difference.

Texico (7-0, 2-0) rallied from a 21-0 deficit late in the second quarter to stun Eunice, 36-28, at home, in a battle between the top two ranked teams in Class 2A. Eunice led, 28-22, at the end of the third quarter before Texico finally pulled even early in the fourth. Senior RB [player_tooltip player_id='1119205' first='Alex' last='Fuentes'] ran for a TD midway through the 4th quarter to snap a 28-28 tie and lift the unbeaten Wolverines to the win. Eunice junior QB [player_tooltip player_id='854273' first='Elijah' last='Melancon'] passed for 317 yards and 4 TD, boosting his career yardage to 6,478 with his senior year still to go.

Players of the Week: [player_tooltip player_id='1119650' first='Kason' last='Perez'], Carlsbad (6A); None (5A); [player_tooltip player_id='1154948' first='Isaiah' last='Carpenter'], St. Pius X (4A); [player_tooltip player_id='1595671' first='Landon' last='Noble'], Newcomb (3A); [player_tooltip player_id='1600087' first='Lorenzo' last='Sedillo-Urban'], Legacy Academy (2A).

Carlsbad QB [player_tooltip player_id='1119650' first='Kason' last='Perez'] broke the school record for most passing touchdowns in a season as he completed 22-of-32 passes for 265 yards and 3 TD in the Cavemen's 26-21 victory over Alamogordo. Perez now has 25 TD passes in 2024 with just 6 interceptions. Four Carlsbad WRs had 3+ receptions against Alamogordo led by [player_tooltip player_id='1137066' first='Robert' last='Castaneda'] with 7 receptions for 87 yards and 2 TD. Carlsbad improved to 4-4 with games remaining against Las Cruces (10/25) and Hobbs (11/1), and are very much in the thick of the fight for a Class 6A playoff berth. Nate Best's 3-yard TD run for Alamogordo sliced Carlsbad's lead to 19-14 late in the third quarter. Later, Best threw a 39-yard TD pass to [player_tooltip player_id='1606032' first='Tristan' last='Bowman'] to make it 26-21 with less than 6 minutes left in the 4Q but got no closer. Alamogordo fell to 1-7 and is likely eliminated from 6A playoff consideration.

Leading 23-3, Rio Rancho (5-2, 2-0) appeared on its way to an easy victory over Piedra Vista at halftime of their game at Rams Stadium. But the Panthers fought back in the second half to make things very interesting. Rams sophomore QB [player_tooltip player_id='1604705' first='Micah' last='Takahashi'] rushed for two short touchdowns and RB Gavien Smith ran for another in the first half. Piedra Vista cut the deficit to 23-18 with a pair of scores in the third quarter. Panthers QB Reuben Marquez, playing his first game since returning from an injury, threw TD passes to RB Brig Keiser and WR [player_tooltip player_id='1606021' first='AJ' last='Cockrell']. Rio Rancho drove for a short rushing TD by [player_tooltip player_id='1272737' first='James' last='Barreras'] to boost the lead back to 12 (30-18). The Rams led, 36-25, when Keiser rushed 7 yards for a TD with about 3 minutes left. The 2-point conversion made it a one-score game but that was as close as Piedra Vista got as the Panthers were stopped on downs on their final possession following a Rio Rancho turnover.

Road Warriors: Dexter posted its second consecutive impressive road victory as the Demons scored 30 points in the second half of a 44-29 victory at Socorro. That win plus last week's 42-0 win at NMMI puts Dexter in excellent position to claim the District 3A-3 title and a first-round bye in the Class 3A playoffs. Socorro led, 22-14, midway through the third quarter before the Demons started their surge. Two straight touchdowns gave them a 28-22 lead early in the fourth quarter. Socorro regained the lead at 29-28 but Dexter scored two TDs in the final six minutes to grab the coveted road win.

Class 6A Roundup: Centennial did what it does best – run the football – by amassing 318 rushing yards in a 51-12 victory over Hobbs at Field of Dreams in a District 6A-3 battle. RB [player_tooltip player_id='837060' first='Rudy' last='Rios'] led the way with 138 yards and 2 TD on 15 carries. QB [player_tooltip player_id='613746' first='Zaiden' last='Davis'] rushed for 76 yards and threw for 117 in the win. Centennial built a 27-6 halftime lead and scored 24 more points in the second half against a very good Hobbs defense. Davis tossed a 49-yard TD pass to WR [player_tooltip player_id='280925' first='Jordan' last='Lucas'] in the third quarter. . .La Cueva QB [player_tooltip player_id='611098' first='Cameron' last='Dyer'] threw 7 TD passes – 4 to senior [player_tooltip player_id='1258091' first='Jayden' last='Parsons'] – as the Bears trailed after the 1st quarter before scoring 56 points in the final 3 quarters for a 63-31 victory over Los Lunas. Dyer also ran for one TD on a 43-yard scamper on La Cueva's first offensive play of the game. Los Lunas led, 13-7, at the end of the first quarter and by 16-14 with less than three minutes remaining in the second quarter after booting a 32-yard field goal. But La Cueva, executing their two-minute offense flawlessly, scored the final TD of the first half on a 2-yard pass from Dyer to RB Cheeto Lumbrera with 25 seconds left to take a 21-16 halftime lead. The unbeaten Bears never trailed again as they dominated the second half. . .Volcano Vista QB [player_tooltip player_id='1119623' first='Ilijah' last='Hansen'] completed 16-of-27 passes for 235 yards and 5 TD (4 on 4 consecutive drives in the 2H) as the Hawks walloped Farmington, 41-7, in a District 6A-1 game at Community Stadium. Four different Volcano Vista receivers had 3+ receptions. The Hawks defense totaled 5 turnovers (3 INT + 2 fumbles), 7 TFL, 6 sacks and 4 QB hurries. . .Dynamic Eldorado sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1155116' first='Jahari' last='Morehead'] returned a one-bounce punt 63 yards for a TD with less than 4 minutes remaining to lift the Eagles to a 14-10 victory over Sandia. Eldorado improved to 4-3 and enhanced their hopes of earning a berth in the Class 6A playoffs for the first time since 2021. Morehead has returned several kicks this season for scores. As the final score indicates, both offenses struggled. Sandia led, 3-0, at halftime on a 25-yard FG. Emiliano Morrison's 5-yard TD run on the first play of the 4th quarter gave Eldorado a 7-3 lead. Sandia regained the lead at 10-7 on QB Jahleel Lewis' 32-yard TD strike to WR [player_tooltip player_id='1119683' first='Joey' last='Harris'] with 9:23 left. . .Atrisco Heritage (2-5) QB [player_tooltip player_id='1021201' first='Landon' last='Griego'] completed 19-of-29 passes for 267 yards and 1 TD to lead the Jaguars to a 24-18 victory over Santa Fe (2-5) at Ivan Head Stadium. Sophomore WR [player_tooltip player_id='1272752' first='J'ven' last='Smith'] caught 11 passes for 158 yards and 1 TD. The Demons played without head coach Andrew Martinez in the wake of a hazing scandal that rocked SFHS earlier in the week. The Demons cut the deficit to 24-18 on Isaiah Juarez's 18-yard TD scramble and converted the 2-pointer with 1:30 left. Sanat Fe got the ball back but a pass completion to the AH15 on the final play fell short. . .West Mesa (4-3) rallied past Albuquerque High, 21-20, at Milne Stadium to keep its 6A playoff hopes alive. The Bulldogs are also 4-3. Mustangs QB [player_tooltip player_id='615617' first='Ronnie' last='Gilletti'] (16 carries for 62 yards; 135 passing yards) ran for the go-ahead TD late in the third quarter. West Mesa RB [player_tooltip player_id='1594033' first='Jamari' last='Phillips-Woods'] led the Mustangs with 103 yards on 13 carries. . . Cleveland pummeled Cibola, 55-0, as the Storm rushed for 185 yards on just 15 carries.
