It's the month of October and that means it's time for a prospect ranking update! Throughout this month, we'll be updating each class ranking and following up those updates with in-depth breakdowns on a ton of prospects in each class. This week, we kicked things off with the 2028 watchlist! Now, because these are just freshmen that are just halfway into their first varsity season, this is just a watchlist. Our first ranking of the 2028 class will come after the season when we have a full body of work to go off of. In this breakdown, we're taking a look at five freshmen that are not only producing this season already but they are doing it at a high level.

Checotah's offense has been on a roll this season and freshman quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1522515' first='Cole' last='Rolland'] has enjoyed a breakout season leading it through the first five games. Now, it should be noted that it definitely helps having one of the best overall players in the state at the wide receiver position. But you can't argue with the numbers. Rolland is one of the top 2028 passers in the state so far with over 1,000 yards and 16 touchdowns and only two interceptions. About 70 percent of those yards have gone to that superstar receiver but he's still a name that we're keeping track of moving forward.

We've probably written this a handful of times over the last 12 months but here's another example of the impressive youth movement going on in Mangum right now. They have several sophomores and freshmen that are worth noting but linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1522520' first='Cooper' last='Kerbo'] is playing at a very high level so far. The freshman is leading the team in tackles and what's impressive is that second place is not particularly close. Kerbo is averaging right at ten tackles per game with 50 on the season and 30 of those tackles have been solo. If you took just his solo tackles and tossed his assisted, he'd still be one tackle off the lead for the team.

Hugo has won four straight games and they are picking up a lot of momentum as we head into the second half of the regular season. Freshman running back [player_tooltip player_id='1522518' first='DK' last='Jeffries'] looks like a player to watch moving forward. He's one of the top freshman backs from a production standpoint this season with nearly 400 yards and seven touchdowns on the year. He's also a couple weeks removed from his breakout performance of the year. In a win over Heavener, Jeffries would run for a little over 200 yards and four touchdowns on just eight carries. Hugo jumped into the 2A-1 rankings this week and is a team to watch.

Locust Grove's offense has been one of the best units in Class 3A football this season. They're averaging close to 50 points per game and they have been clicking on all cylinders from the start of the year. The Pirates have a three-headed monster at wide receiver and freshman [player_tooltip player_id='1522519' first='Jett' last='Stephens'] is part of that group. Stephens is one of the state's top freshmen in just about every receiving category. He has 29 catches for nearly 500 yards and six touchdowns. His best game came against 2A-2's #3 Adair when he caught ten passes for 130 yards and three touchdowns. He has three 100+ yard games this year.

The Poteau Pirates are known for having one of the better defensive units in Class 4A and in the state so the fact that a freshman is leading them in tackles is definitely something that catches our attention. Linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1522522' first='Ryder' last='Waddell'] leads the Pirates with 46 tackles on the season and is tied for the team lead with 12 tackles for loss. In his first four games of his varsity career, Waddell would register double digit tackles but came up short of that in the week five loss to Ada. There are a few Waddells that have had an impact on the Pirates this season and Ryder looks to be the next name to know moving forward.
