I'm glad I stuck around to watch Detroit MLK face off against Cleveland Heights at the Xenith Kickoff Classic. I was able to be very close to the action and see several players in ways that are impossible behind a computer screen. Things are just different in person, and that was apparent last Friday night. So, here are the five Detroit MLK players who I watched the closest last Friday.

I kept a very, very close eye on Darryl throughout the game.

It's extremely apparent and obvious that Darryl has made significant progress since a year ago. His playmaking ability is elite, and I love how quick his throwing motion is. Better yet, Darryl is a MASTER at throwing on the run. His throws while running or sprinting were impeccable. Finally, Darryl did an incredible job of running the football. He's insanely athletic, and is a true dual threat that has the talent to be a national Power 4 prospect. One aspect I'd like to see him improve upon is his pocket passing. Many snaps went over his head, but even on good snaps, it looked like Darryl was in panic mode and almost immediately fled the pocket on every play.

Another aspect that I'd like to explore is Darryl's competitiveness. This kid is incredibly competitive, and he wants to win badly. I absolutely love how passionate and competitive Darryl is, but the thing is, he sometimes puts that emotion in the wrong place. I won't go into specifics, but there were a couple of concerning moments where Darryl's competitive emotions were expressed in an unhealthy manner.

All in all, I'm sold on Darryl when it comes to his on-field talent. The sky is the limit, and I'm hoping he's able to fix a few of his flaws in order to become the national prospect that I know he can be.

Dukes came to play last week! He's another one of the many Detroit MLK players that I think have shown significant improvement. I finally saw that burst and big-play ability, which has been well-advertised. I wasn't completely sold before, but now I am.

Michael is an elusive back through and through. He is not great in power situations, but give him an outside zone or even a screen, and he'll have a good chance to take it the distance. Cleveland Heights is no pushover, and that team leaned on their athleticism. Even against a team with several future college skill players, Michael displayed good vision and open-field burst. I still think that Michael is on a MAC trajectory, but he's honestly a GLIAC prospect if he doesn't improve form this point, though that's unlikely.

Jameer had a few bright spots. Obviously, he has the size to be an elite prospect on either side of the football. Then, there's the fact that Detroit MLK has been a D1 factory for years. I also saw Jameer display a great amount of power for a sophomore lineman. He's a bit stiff and will need to work on his agility, especially if he's going to be a defensive player, but still, he has excellent an excellent foundation. Jameer should have a good season, and he could explode into a national prospect this offseason.

Another solid day for Calvin. Honestly, I was wondering how him and the King O-Ling would fare against a big-looking Cleveland Heights front 7. For the most part, the opposing defensive line was all bark and no bite. Calvin anchored the O-line very well, and he proved why he's a top 50 player in the state of Michigan.

This was my first time watching Xavier (Tree) very closely during a game. The first thing that'll stand out to anyone is the size. He's a true 6'5" with long arms and overall ideal measurements. He's also quite a bit more polished than many others his size (with similar offers as well), which is why I have him ranked so high. When Xavier was out there, I loved his effort, and he was also having a lot of fun making plays. Xavier can sometimes hesitate and struggle to get something going past his initial pass rush move but he always eventually recoups and puts in that effort through the whistle. He also played quite a bit of offense as an outside receiver, which I can appreciate.
