Xavier Newsom
About Xavier

It’s been a few years covering Tree, and he was one of my favorite EDGE rushers over the years. This year in particular, I think Xavier took a big step forward in his game. He knows how to use his length to his advantage, and has a very wide tackle radius.
I thought Xavier was a good B1G 10 prospect, so him being at Howard is an absolute steal. Can’t wait to see what Tree does in college!

Xavier “Tree” has an amazing opportunity against a pass-heavy Mason offense.
Watching him earlier this season, I know that Tree is far more polished than some other EDGE rushers with great size. Great getoff, and able to swipe the opposing tackle’s hands away. In addition, overall great athleticism and leadership traits.
I have little doubt that Xavier will be a great early contributor at Howard!

- Absolutely elite size + length
- Energetic
- Great pass rusher; should pressure the QB
- Xavier and the DL should keep Mason pretty one-dimensional
- True D1 talent

The now Howard commit has been tearing it up this season. Using his unreal size and mobility to terrorize offenses all year long. When I saw him against Detroit Catholic Central, he was one of the great impact players on King. His long arms and big frame allow him to keep defenders out of his chest and keeps him free to make plays on the outside. With his quick get off and solid pass rush moves, Xavier keeps solidifying himself as a top defense player in the 2025 class.

Xavier’s Week 1 performance against Cleveland Heights still stands out to me.
I’ve seen a lot of players with similar size. 6’5″+, long arms, relatively thin. In the vast majority of cases, players with that same size profile have D1 offers while still looking incredibly raw. Not Xavier. While he still has room to grow, I was very impressed with his violent hands, motor, and tackle radius. This is a prospect with little quit, and someone who knows how to maneuver his body to win blocks. He’s a P5 prospect in my eyes and I’m looking forward to seeing where he ends up committing!

- Elite size keeps offensive linemen from being able to take control of him when rushing the passer
- Pulled out a couple nice moves to get free
- Did a great job of setting the edge without getting too far up field, stayed disciplined
- Best I have seen him perform in person

This was my first time watching Xavier (Tree) very closely during a game. The first thing that’ll stand out to anyone is the size. He’s a true 6’5″ with long arms and overall ideal measurements. He’s also quite a bit more polished than many others his size (with similar offers as well), which is why I have him ranked so high. When Xavier was out there, I loved his effort, and he was also having a lot of fun making plays. Xavier can sometimes hesitate and struggle to get something going past his initial pass rush move but he always eventually recoups and puts in that effort through the whistle. He also played quite a bit of offense as an outside receiver, which I can appreciate.

Xavier is an excellent uncommitted Power 4 prospect who I fully expect to have his best season yet. Over the past couple of years, Xavier has shown great effort, motor, and a good understanding of pass rush. Using his elite size, Xavier is able to effortlessly shed most block attempts. Even against great offensive lines, Xavier has displayed good bend, violent hands, and an overall great understanding of pass rush. He is pretty light for the EDGE position, but I’m confident he’ll put on some weight once he gets to college. This season, I’d love to see Xavier display an even better getoff, physicality, and motor. I’ll see him Week 1 as King takes on Cleveland Heights- and I hope to see improvements to his already dominant skillset!

There are very few people on this planet who can create the match-up issue that Xavier creates the minute he steps onto the field. All weekend he was easily the most dominant player in the Red Zone. I referred to him as “The Tree” and later found out that was his nickname. He was unstoppable. 6’5″ and 220lbs and moves as well as he does is incredible. He was used as a TE and had no issue going up and over the top for TDs. He was making it look easy and could snag the ball with 1 hand. 1 TD he went up, snagged the ball, and looked down at the DB to make sure he wasn’t going to land ontop of him on the way down. I had no idea watching he was a 4-star recruit, but when I got home and started to dig it all made sense. Newsom is an unreal athlete and I’m stoked to see what he does in the future.
