Ashbrook at Crest - Defensive Standouts

The Crest Chargers used a dominant second half to take control and defeat the Ashbrook.Green Wave 29-12 in a matchup of undefeated football teams. Players from both sides stood out defensively, we will take a look at them in this article.    I was very impressed with Jhari overall. He's listed as a DB, but he played in the box most of the night as a strong safety/rover type of player. It seemed like he was in on almost every play, I thought he showed excellent speed and tackling ability. He was almost always in the right spot every time and his eyes reading plays were excellent in my opinion.     The talented safety prospect didn't get many chances to show off in pass coverage due to the Green Wave's run heavy gameplan. But, I did see enough to know that Surratt has excellent range in coverage and he never was beat over the top on any pass routes coming his way. I thought Surratt also did a good job in late run support overall. The highly regarded Surratt recently received an offer from North Carolina and has several Division 1 offers from other schools currently.     Lyrik helped set a physical tone in the football game - on Ashbrook's first play from scrimmage, Lyrik delivered a big hit on a receiver on an attempted hitch route from the slot that showed his tackling ability in open spaces. Lyrik also had a highlight-worthy tackle in pass coverage the week before against Charlotte Catholic. Appalachian State, Charlotte, Duke, & Norfolk State are all currently recruiting Lyrik and I think more offers should be coming his way.     Kentrell was a strong presence in the middle of the Crest defensive line that helped slow down the heavy run attack of the Green Wave, especially in the 2nd half. Kentrell's strength in not getting moved on early downs allowed linebackers and defensive backs to flow freely and make tackles in the run game. Once Ashbrook got behind and had to throw, Kentrell forced more attention from the Green Wave offensive line on him which allowed other players to win their 1 on 1 battles and get to the quarterback in the passing game.     Caleb is one of the hottest linebacker recruits in the state currently, picking up offers from North Carolina, Liberty, and Virginia Tech in the last week. I think Caleb did a good job in slowing down the interior run game of the Chargers. You could see the gameplan from Crest was to run outside, primarily with outside zone plays, to stay away from Caleb's presence in the middle of the field. Caleb did a good job of running plays down in the running game and showed good discipline in pass coverage - he had a nice pass breakup in the first quarter as a reflection of this.     Currently with offers from Lenoir-Rhyne, Limestone, and Hampden-Sydney, Jeremiah showed himself to be a strong presence in the middle of the Ashbrook defensive line. He was double-teamed a good bit, but that allowed his teammate [player_tooltip player_id='1246060' first='Caleb' last='Gordon'] to roam free and make plays. I like Jeremiah as a run-stopping defensive tackle and he could be a player that continues to receive additional recruiting attention and offers as he continues to put good plays on film throughout the season.
