The Wagoner Bulldogs almost went wire to wire as Class 4A's number one team in 2023. The Bulldogs were coming into last season as the defending champions and the team to beat in Class 4A. They brought back the majority of their starters and they flexed their muscles throughout the 2023 regular season. They dominated their way through non-district play, winning every game by 17 points or more. The Bulldogs would then continue that domination in district play, which isn't exactly a new story for this Wagoner football program. The only close contest came in week six, when they met Cushing in a 2022 state championship rematch. The Bulldogs would beat the Tigers 15-14 at home and that would catapult them to the district championship. Wagoner didn't slow down when they entered the playoffs. They beat every team by 30 points or more in the first three rounds. That included a quarterfinal win over fellow perennial power Tuttle and a semifinal win over Ada. They would meet up with Blanchard in the state championship game and after a two-hour weather delay, the Lions would end Wagoner's pursuit of a second consecutive state title and what would have been their third gold ball in four seasons. So Wagoner had to settle for silver in 2023. But now it's 2024 and the Bulldogs are once again right near the top of Class 4A. And they have their eyes on adding more gold.

2024 OUTLOOK

Just like in 2023, the Bulldogs bring back the majority of their starters and they will certainly come into this season feeling like they have unfinished business. The Bulldogs are once again a top five team in the preseason rankings and one of the main contenders to win it all. And this is a Wagoner team that could be more dominant during the regular season than what we saw from them last season. First off, they bring back eight starters on offense, including a three-year starter at quarterback. They will need to find some new faces to step up at wide receiver but almost all of their production from the other positions is back. On defense, it's the same story. Eight starters return and the strength of this unit will without a doubt come from the front seven and the defensive line in particular. Wagoner is headlined by one of the top defensive prospects in the state's 2025 class. Another reason Wagoner could reach new heights in their regular season domination is the schedule itself. The Bulldogs are going to be a major favorite every single week and it wouldn't be surprising to see them win every game by double digits. But with that, comes possible adversity. They will undoubtedly get everyone's best shot, week after week. The Bulldogs will be looking to play their best football in November and December. When we look at Class 4A as a whole, it feels like it is completely wide open at the top and five or six teams could win it. Wagoner is hoping that they are the one team that will.

The players to watch are in alphabetical order but when you're talking about Wagoner's standouts, it's hard not to start the conversation right here. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='294262' first='Alex' last='Shieldnight'] has been one of the best players in Class 4A football and in the state over the last two seasons. He's already shattered the Wagoner school record for sacks and will be attempting to put it at a number that's never touched by the time his career is over. Shieldnight committed to OU and is an absolute nightmare for opposing offensive linemen. And don't overlook what Shieldnight can do on offense. He's a talented tight end that has shown steady improvement over the last two years.

We mentioned earlier how Wagoner would need some new wide receivers to step up with the graduation of Edwards. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1100465' first='Anthony' last='Coleman'] could very well be that guy. Last season, Coleman showed a lot of potential before an injury derailed what could have been a breakout junior campaign. Coleman has good size at 6'2 and will be playing on both sides of the ball for the Bulldogs. But it's what Coleman can do on the offensive side of the ball that has us intrigued. And despite Coleman missing most of last season, he has the attention of college coaches and his recruitment could explode with a big senior season this fall.

Senior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1100463' first='Bryce' last='Steel'] made a massive jump from his sophomore year to what we saw from him last season. Steel was a good player as a sophomore and he finished the year with nearly 50 tackles. Last season, his production exploded. He finished the year with 131 tackles and he also had nine sacks. The craziest number is the 45 tackles for loss that Steel tallied up from the inside linebacker position. We mentioned how strong this Wagoner front seven could be and Steel is a big part of it. Shieldnight is obviously a star but the Bulldogs have other players throughout the defense that have the ability to really take over a game.

Senior offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='447554' first='Dax' last='Griffin'] is going to be one of the more experienced offensive linemen in Class 4A this season. Griffin has started in 28 games as he comes into this season and he leads a Wagoner offensive line that is experienced and talented. One thing that we're intrigued by heading into this season is how much we'll see Griffin turn around and play some defense. The Wagoner coaches are excited about his potential to be a game-wrecker on the defensive line. They know they have a force on offense that knows how to use his hands and is incredibly strong. This could end up being a breakout year for Griffin on defense as well.

Senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='530573' first='Kale' last='Charboneau'] is going into his third season as QB1 of the Bulldogs and he put up some monster numbers last season. First off, his improvement as a passer was one of the best jumps we saw in 2023. He would finish the season with nearly 2,900 yards and 22 touchdowns and he was still a threat to run the ball with nearly 1,000 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground. And don't forget about what the Wagoner senior can do on defense. And just like on offense, his production had a massive spike on that side of the ball from the linebacker position. He would finish with over 100 tackles and will be one of the top two-way players in the state this fall.

Sept. 6th - Coweta
- It's the annual Highway 51 rivalry game to kick off the season as Wagoner will host Coweta. Last year, the Bulldogs took back control of this rivalry after a rare two-game losing streak to the Tigers. They lost in 2021 and then again in 2022 but they beat Coweta 24-7 last season. The two-game skid against Coweta was the first since the mid-2000's, when Condict was taking over this Wagoner program. The Tigers are young but talented and in a rivalry game, anything can happen.
Sept. 13th - Tahlequah
Sept. 20th - AT Bristow
Sept. 27th - AT Fort Gibson
- In week four, Wagoner opens district play against Fort Gibson on the road. Despite these two towns being relatively close to one another, this will be their first match-up in district play since 2009. They've met each other plenty of times since then in non-district play and in playoff encounters but the last one came in 2019. The Bulldogs have owned this series and they are hoping to get district play off to a good start against a Fort Gibson team that's looking to shock some people this year.
Oct. 4th - Miami
Oct. 11th - AT Catoosa
Oct. 17th - Cushing
- This has turned into quite the district rivalry and it almost didn't happen this year. Up until April, Cushing was going to be in one of the west side districts in Class 4A. The April redistricting sent them back east and into Wagoner's district. As we mentioned earlier, last year's regular season meeting was Wagoner's closest game in the regular season. And Bulldog fans surely haven't forgotten the 2022 state championship. This game could decide the district crown once again.
Oct. 25th - AT Grove
Nov. 1st - Skiatook
Nov. 8th - AT Oologah

Head coach Dale Condict is going into his 19th season as head coach of the Bulldogs. This month, Condict will be inducted into the Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall Of Fame and it's more than deserved. The Wagoner head coach continues climbing the all time wins list every single season. He has 235 wins coming into this season and that's just at Wagoner. He has well over 250 wins for his career. And ever since he took over at Wagoner in 2005, he immediately turned them into a winner. Before he took over, the Bulldogs made 14 playoff appearances in school history and only one state championship game appearance. Since 2005, the Bulldogs have won nearly 50 playoff games. Wagoner has been to the playoffs in every season under Condict and the Bulldogs have won at least one playoff game in each playoff appearance during that streak. And the majority of them involved Wagoner making a run to the championship game or at least the semifinals. Needless to say, Condict has been one of the best coaches in the state for a long time now and in July, before the OCA coaches convention, he takes his rightful spot in the Hall Of Fame.
