The Vian Wolverines knew that the 2023 season would be challenging considering the tough early schedule, combined with rebuilding on the offensive side of the ball. Despite that, the Wolverines would still make it to the quarterfinals before falling to eventual state champion Washington. Vian began the season with a 1-2 record after playing the eventual Class 3A and Class 2A state champions in Lincoln Christian and Washington respectively. They would then go into district play and get on a roll, winning five consecutive games. Vian had a week nine showdown against Prague and would lose an overtime classic. The following week, the Wolverines lost in an upset to Tahlequah Sequoyah in the regular season finale. Because of that rare two-game losing streak in district play, Vian found themselves going into the playoffs as the three seed. They would beat Eufaula for the second time in 2023 in the first round. They would go on to beat Adair in the second round but a quarterfinal rematch with Washington awaited. And the season came to an end as the Warriors beat the Wolverines for the second time in 2023. Vian would finish the season at 8-5 and while they took their bumps, the future is incredibly bright heading into the 2024 season. And let's face it, Vian is one of those programs that is routinely in the mix as a contender in their respective class. And that class changes dramatically starting this fall.

2024 OUTLOOK

There are several reasons why you can make the argument that Vian is the favorite to win their first state championship in over five decades. First off, Class 2A has officially split into two divisions and the Wolverines find themselves in the division featuring the smaller schools of the old Class 2A. They no longer have to worry about perennial powers Jones, Millwood and of course, two-time defending champion Washington. Then you throw in the fact that the Wolverines bring back basically everyone from last year's team and you have a recipe for making a possible run to Edmond. Vian brings back nine starters on the offensive side of the ball, including both of their offensive stars that each finished with over 1,000 yards on the ground. They have more of an established offense coming into this season and everyone will know their roles. And then you look at the defensive side of the ball and they bring back ten starters. The 2024 schedule also looks like one where the Wolverines will be able to get momentum right out of the gate. Only time will tell, but they probably won't be playing two eventual state champions in two of the first three games. Because of all of this, Vian has the potential to have a memorable season in 2024. And when we talk about Vian, we talk about a program that is one of the more consistent small school programs in the state. They make ten wins look automatic and have made plenty of playoff runs. But they are still searching for their first state championship since 1971. This year could be the year that all the pieces fall into place.

Junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1322378' first='Cash' last='Trammel'] is new to the Vian program and he gives the Wolverines a completely new dynamic at the quarterback position. Last season, the Wolverines put one of the best athletes in the state's 2026 class back at quarterback but he's definitely more valuable in other spots. So adding Trammel to the backfield and giving the Wolverines a real passing threat at quarterback will make this Vian offense much more difficult to gameplan for. It's expected that the Wolverines will still run two quarterbacks out there throughout the 2024 season but Trammel is the pass-first quarterback but don't overlook his ability to tuck the ball and run when he needs to do so.

Junior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1163096' first='Draighton' last='Fletcher'] had a monster sophomore season and he's hungry for more going into this season. Last fall, it's safe to say that Fletcher was a breakout star for the Wolverines. He would lead the team in rushing and finished with nearly 1,300 yards and 18 touchdowns. Fletcher shared the backfield and split the carries but still found a way to lead the team in rushing. Fletcher is going to be a name to watch heading into this season simply from a production standpoint. What will it look like this season after seeing what he was able to do in the Vian offense last season. We expect him to be an impact player once again in 2024.

All eyes will be on junior standout [player_tooltip player_id='424595' first='Masyn' last='Wright'] as he gets to play more free within the offense this season. He had a breakout season as a freshman and then was Vian's primary quarterback last season. And while Wright did a good job, he's not a quarterback. He's one of the best athletes in the state and can be moved around to so many different spots. The Wolverines will still use Wright at quarterback at times and he, alongside Fletcher in the backfield, is a tough combo to defend. But Wright having the ability to move around on offense, in addition to what he can do on defense will make him one of the very best overall players in the class this season.

Sept. 6th - AT Eufaula
Sept. 13th - Kiefer
Sept. 20th - AT Pocola
- The Wolverines will wrap up non-district play against Pocola in a match-up featuring high-powered offenses and there will be some serious star power on both sides. But the Wolverines will go into this match-up with a lot of confidence because this is a series that has been completely one-sided. These two teams were district foes from 2018-2021 and the Wolverines would average well over 50 points on offense while shutting out Pocola each meeting.
Sept. 27th - Wilburton
Oct. 4th - Spiro
Oct. 11th - AT Keys
Oct. 17th - Valliant
- On a Fall Break Thursday night in week seven, Vian will play host to Valliant. And just like with the Pocola match-up, this one is an intriguing game because both teams have outstanding 2026 prospects and there's legit star power on both teams. The Wolverines haven't played Valliant in recent memory and the Bulldogs will have a first year head coach this season. But because of their top players they have coming back, this is a team that could make some noise in Class 2A-2.
Oct. 25th - AT Antlers
- One week after facing Valliant, Vian will hit the road to face an Antlers team and this is definitely the toughest two-week stretch of the season, at least on paper going in. The Wolverines haven't played Antlers in nearly a decade. And this is an Antlers team that is looking to bounce back in a major way after going 5-5, despite a 4-0 start. But they bring back the majority of their starters and could give Vian a challenge but the Wolverines are definitely the favorites.
Nov. 1st - Morris
Nov. 8th - AT Atoka

NOTABLE

Vian will look to take full advantage of being in a new class with a new district and get back to dominating in district play. The 2024 season was a rare year where they lost two district games and would finish third in the district, making their path in the playoffs significantly more difficult than what they're used to. From 2013-2022, Vian would be borderline unstoppable in district play. The Wolverines held a 60-3 record against district opponents during that stretch and they never lost two district games in a single season. They had a decent winning streak in district play with their last district loss coming in the Covid-affected season of 2020 when they lost to Cascia Hall on the road. But in 2023, the Wolverines would lose in the final two weeks but despite those losses, they turned it around and made a run to the 2A quarterfinals. Now, Vian is back in a familiar position as we head into the 2024 season. They are one of the favorites in the newly formed Class 2A-2 and will look to get back to dominating district opponents along the way.
