The 2024 season is rapidly approaching, and as a way to start previewing it, I have decided to go district by district and choose a player from every team as a breakout candidate. The breakout candidates are players who are flying under the radar, young players biding their time, etc. These guys are set to make a big name for themselves in 2024, tap in NOW!!!

Things are going to look a bit different for the Dragons, who will go from being one of the top teams in Class A in recent years to their return back to Class B. There are going to be quite a few new starters for the Dragons this fall as they graduated a very talented class. One player that I am excited to see back on the field is senior RB [player_tooltip player_id='1055710' first='Logan' last='Secora']. Unfortunately for Logan, injuries have severely limited his time on the field the past two seasons. However, he looks set to return and likely take over RB1 duties on a team with a lot of youth at the position. The Dragons could be a run-heavy team this season as they will be rolling out with a new starting QB and will have one of the best offensive lines in Class B, so the stage is set for Logan to have a breakout year.

The Griffins are in a good place to make a push for their first playoff appearance with a solid group of seniors and some very hungry young guys. One guy to keep an eye on is defensive end [player_tooltip player_id='1059150' first='Frank' last='Thomas'], who had a great season despite flying somewhat under the radar. As a junior, Frank posted 49 tackles, 6 TFLs, a team-leading 5 sacks, a forced fumble, and blocked a kick. Frank isn't the biggest defensive lineman out there, but he sure makes up for it with his quickness and red-hot motor. Thomas does an excellent job using his natural leverage and strength to outmuscle blockers and win his matchups at the LOS. What really stood out to me about Frank is that he doesn't give up on the play. You can find him 10-15 yards down the field tracking down ball-carriers. Ultimately, there are several players who will likely break out for a big season, but Frank's play up front could make life rough for opposing QBs.

Platteview senior [player_tooltip player_id='1060774' first='Cal' last='Pugh'] has been a steady riser this offseason, with solid performances at the PRZ showcase and other college camps. Cal recently received his first offer from Midland, and it's clear to see why the Warriors were quick to jump on the 6'3" 200-lb prospect. Pugh is a versatile player who has the measurables (78" wingspan) and solid testing numbers (4.85 40-yard & 4.36 pro agility) to project to either the offensive or defensive side of the ball at the next level. On defense, Cal accumulated 16 tackles, 2 TFLs, and a sack while having to miss four games due to injury. He split time at linebacker and defensive end and excelled in both roles, showing off his ability to shed blocks and a great pursuit for the ball. Strong, secure tackler. Although the Trojans might be set at tight end, don't be surprised to see Cal become a bigger part of the passing game. Big season coming up for Cal and the Trojans!

Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1085632' first='Levi' last='Walker'] looks to be the next RB in an impressive streak of great backs for Plattsmouth. Levi wasted no time working his way onto the varsity roster as a freshman, and even though he only toted the rock 23 times, he averaged 9.2 yards a carry for 211 yards and a rushing touchdown. Levi displays good vision on his runs as he is able to quickly find open lanes and anticipates blocks very well. He has a nice burst when he hits his lane and has the speed to accelerate past the defense for big gains. Good change of direction and shiftiness in the open field. With three more years of HS football, I'm excited to see what the rest of Levi's prep career will look like— big upside!

I am sure that the Ralston Rams are excited to have their battering ram of a running back, back in the stable to help lead them back to the playoffs. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='736418' first='Conner' last='Brown'] is a big, physical back who had a tremendous junior season in which he rushed for 735 yards and 6 rushing touchdowns. He also added 207 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown as part of the passing game. When you watch Conner's tape, you see a bruising back that can absorb and dish out contact while keeping his legs pumping for more yards. You definitely need a couple of defenders to bring him down when he gets his momentum going. He's not a super shifty back, but he does use his cuts effectively to find open lanes and flashes a great burst when he hits his hole. Brown will also be a key contributor on defense with 20 tackles, a TFL, and an interception returned for a touchdown.
