The Mangum Tigers came into the 2023 season with some expectations as a preseason top ten team. But they were also a team that still needed to establish themselves as serious contenders in Class A. Unfortunately, the 2023 season feels like a massive “what if” season after their star freshman quarterback went down with a labrum tear early on in the year. We know that the Mangum coaches were very high on their freshman signal caller and his season basically ended before it ever got started. However, the whole season wasn't a loss and the Tigers would still have a winning record and made another playoff appearance. Mangum began the season with a 4-0 mark but would drop back to back games to open up district play. That put them behind the eight ball and while they won four straight games to close out the regular season with an 8-2 record, they would have a tougher road in the playoffs. After a first round trip to the panhandle to face Hooker, Mangum's season came to an end at 8-3. For the fourth consecutive season, Mangum's season would come to an end in the first round. However, this was a team that averaged nearly 40 points per game on the offensive side of the ball and they bring almost everybody back in 2024. There are quite a few reasons to be very optimistic about the Tigers heading into this fall and that's why they find themselves as the number two team in our preseason rankings.

2024 OUTLOOK

Nine starters are back on the offensive side of the ball, including that quarterback that Mangum's coaches are so high on. We're looking forward to seeing what he can do with a very talented and more importantly, an experienced offense around him. And nine starters are back on the defensive side of the ball as well. This team has all the tools to make a run in the newly formed Class A-2. This is the smallest 11-man class in the state now that Class A has been split into two divisions. And Mangum could end up being the deepest team in the class. They bring back nine starters on both sides of the ball and they have a roster with nearly 50 guys on it. That depth, experience and overall talent is going to not only be an advantage for the Tigers, but that's what's going to separate them from some of the other teams in the class. And when we look at and break down Mangum's schedule, it's a manageable one. While it mostly consists of new opponents after the redistricting in April, the Tigers should feel like they have what it takes to win the district and make a run when November rolls around. This is a Mangum team that has quite a few young pieces that have high ceilings. When you combine those young potential stars with the experience and depth this team has, Mangum could have a season to remember. It's been a while since they've had extended playoff success but all the signs point to 2024 being the year for that.

Mangum has several players to watch on the offensive side of the ball. Senior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1005610' first='Austin' last='Solis'] has definitely earned his way on this breakdown after his season last fall. Solis was not on our radar at this time last year and it did not take long for him to grab our attention. Solis would finish his junior season with over 1,200 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground. He averaged over 100 yards per game and then turned around and finished the year with nearly 80 tackles on the season. Mangum probably didn't go into the season expecting that kind of production from Solis but his breakout season was a pleasant surprise and now he's back for more.

At this time last year, we had [player_tooltip player_id='1325121' first='Avery' last='Rogers'] on our radar but it was as a running back. It didn't take long for that to change throughout the season. Rogers emerged as one of the top receivers on the team and he returns this season as the most productive receiver within this offense. Rogers finished with nearly 600 yards receiving and seven touchdowns. But Rogers was on our radar as a running back and he had an impact in the running game. He finished the year with nearly 350 yards and a handful of touchdowns on the ground. He averaged an eye-opening 13 yards per carry. Rogers has the potential to be arguably Mangum's top playmaker on offense.

On paper, the Mangum offense looks like it could be one of the best units in the class and they'll have a chance to earn that title this fall. But as talented as the skill players are, it all starts up front on the line of scrimmage. Senior offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1325119' first='Gavin' last='Williams'] is back this fall and he'll be a four-year starter for the Tigers on the offensive line. That kind of experience is incredibly valuable at the Class A level. Williams and the rest of the Mangum offensive line will look to set the tone for a Tiger offense that could be very potent. Having a four-year starter anchoring the offensive line is going to give the Tigers an advantage against teams that aren't as experienced.

Before this preview, we looked it up and we've written quite a few articles about quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='916843' first='Remington' last='Laughlin'] and he has to be hungry to get back on the field. Laughlin came into last season, expecting to be that breakout player for the Tigers as a freshman quarterback. But a labrum tear would end that freshman campaign. He came to our camp in January and was one of the top quarterbacks in attendance. Now, he's focused on the 2024 season and looking to make up for lost time. When it comes to Laughlin, the ceiling is incredibly high with him but now he just has to go out there each week and back up the hype. He'll be leading a very explosive Mangum offense.

While the offense has quite a bit of talent returning, don't overlook a defense that brings back nine starters on that side of the ball. Leading the way will be junior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1325113' first='Trey' last='Williams'] after he enjoyed a breakout season last fall with well over 100 tackles. According to all of our notes, Williams is going to come into this season as the team's leading tackler among the returning starters. Williams also came up big in the turnover department and also spent some time on offense and was productive coming out of the backfield. Mangum's defense looks to match the offense's dominance and Williams is going to certainly play a big role within that unit.

Sept. 6th - AT Wilson (Ardmore)
Sept. 13th - Hobart
- The home opener is always a date to circle on any football schedule. And for Mangum, this season is going to look very different with six out of the ten regular season opponents being different from last season. But in week two, the Tigers will host a Hobart team that has been a district opponent for the last six seasons. And they've met every year since 2010. The Tigers have won three in a row in the series. Before that, Hobart rattled off five straight and eight out of nine.
Sept. 20th - AT Watonga
Sept. 27th - Apache
- The district opener in week four against Apache was incredibly important for Mangum last season and it will be again in 2024. Last year, the Tigers fell to Apache 49-28 and they would go on to capture the district championship. This season, these two teams will be in the running for the district title once again and are two of the best teams in the class. The Tigers have lost the last two in the series but even though this is just the district opener, it's going to be a massive game.
Oct. 4th - Southwest Covenant
Oct. 11th - AT Mooreland
Oct. 17th - AT Cordell
Oct. 25th - Texhoma
Nov. 1st - AT Thomas
- In week nine, the Tigers are hoping to be on the verge of locking down the district championship but a road test against Thomas will possibly be the last hurdle. The Tigers will go on the road to face a Thomas team that has had their fair share of seasons where they jump up as contenders and this year could possibly be one of those seasons. It's also a program that Mangum hasn't seen in over a decade. The 2010 playoffs were the last meeting between these two.
Nov. 8th - AT Carnegie

NOTABLE

Coming into a season as the preseason number two team obviously puts a big target on a program. And for Mangum, they have high expectations but they also plan on taking it one game at a time, specifically when they get into the playoffs. The Tigers have made seven consecutive playoff appearances but they are looking to have more success once they get there. During this current streak, the only playoff wins came in the 2019 playoffs before falling to Pawnee in the quarterfinal round. In fact, eight out of the last nine playoff appearances for Mangum have ended with them losing in the first round. That includes a streak of four consecutive first round exits heading into this season. The Tigers have high expectations and some really good players on both sides of the ball. And as we mentioned earlier, the split in Class A definitely makes the path to Edmond a little easier for the schools in the lower division. But before Mangum starts thinking about playing for a state title, they'll be taking it one game at a time.
