Throughout the month of July and even into August, we are publishing well over 100 of the most in-depth team previews that you'll find anywhere to get you completely ready for the 2024 football season. This is something that began for us at PRZ-Oklahoma in 2021 and it continues to get bigger and better every single year. We're looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state in every class. From defending champions, to the top contenders and plenty of dark horses and other teams to know, we'll have complete coverage every single day. There will be multiple previews dropping every single day! In this post, we take a look at the Frederick Bombers!

Frederick Bombers

Preseason Prep Redzone Ranking: #8 In Class A-1
Preseason Coaches Ranking: #8 In Class A-1

Head Coach: Bret Tyler - 9th Season - 50-37 Record At Frederick

2023 RESULTS (6-5 Record - Lost In Class 2A 1st Round)

Aug. 25th - Lost To Wellington, TX. 30-0
Sept. 1st - Beat Wichita Falls City View, TX. 29-22
Sept. 8th - Beat Hobart 40-6
Sept. 22nd - Lost To Washington 42-7
Sept. 28th - Beat Little Axe 37-12
Oct. 6th - Lost To Purcell 27-0
Oct. 12th - Beat Comanche 37-15
Oct. 20th - Beat Crooked Oak 57-12
Oct. 27th - Lost To Lindsay 26-6
Nov. 3rd - Beat Community Christian 12-7
1st Round - Lost To Kingston 30-27

2023 Offensive Scoring Average: 22.9 Points Per Game
2023 Defensive Scoring Average: 20.8 Points Per Game

The Frederick Bombers came into the 2023 season following a 2022 campaign in which they finished 8-4. In 2023, they would have another winning season but ultimately an early exit in the Class 2A playoffs. The Bombers would start the year with a 3-3 mark but would play well down the stretch to punch their ticket in the playoffs. It started with a 1-1 record against two Texas schools and then a win over Hobart to wrap non-district play. The Bombers lost to Washington and Purcell in two of the first three weeks of district play and needed to flip that switch the rest of the way or they were in danger of missing the playoffs. They beat Comanche, Crooked Oak and Community Christian in the final four weeks to avoid missing out on the postseason. That week ten game against Community Christian had to feel like the playoffs started early with a feeling of it was “win or go home” and the Bombers rose to the occasion and clinched the four seed out of their district. In the opening round of the playoffs, they went on the road to face district champion Kingston. They would actually push the Redskins and nearly pulled off the upset but fell 30-27. Now, the Bombers will shift their focus to a new class and bring back a good group of skill players to not only continue their streak of winning seasons and playoff appearances, but they could end up making a decent run once they get there.

2024 OUTLOOK

The Bombers are excited about the potential of a new season with some of the firepower they bring back in 2024. Starting on the offensive side of the ball, Frederick's coaches are excited about the guys they have coming back in the skill department. They have to find a replacement for a graduating quarterback and the Bombers will also have several new names on the line of scrimmage. So while they look for new faces to fill those roles this season, the return of a very productive running back will put this offense in a position to still put up some points. And whoever the quarterback ends up being, he's going to have some talented players at the wide receiver position. All in all, five starters are back on the offensive side of the ball but we really like those skill players providing some playmaking ability. On defense, the Bombers also bring back five starters. We think the Bombers have a good mixture of returning experience at all three levels of the defense. This was a unit that gave up an average of 20 points per game in 2023. But we think they could improve on that number in 2024. We mentioned how the Bombers are in a new class this season as they drop down from originally slated to be Class 2A-2 to now in Class A-1. Frederick is a top ten team in our Class A-1 preseason rankings and could definitely challenge for the district championship. And if they are able to do that, that will set them up for success in the playoffs.

KEY LOSSES TO GRADUATION

Alex Mathews - Full Back/Linebacker
Kolten Duncan - Offensive/Defensive Lineman
Zach Tyler - Quarterback/Defensive Back

PLAYERS TO WATCH

The Bombers will have a new quarterback in 2024 and it could end up being junior [player_tooltip player_id='1343456' first='Dalton' last='Wells'] this fall. Wells is not a new name when it comes to productive Bombers. Last season, as a sophomore, Wells would have a major impact on the defensive side of the ball. He would finish the 2023 campaign with 70 tackles on the year. Wells is definitely in line to be QB1 for the Bombers and he will obviously bring a physical presence to the position. And regardless of what he's able to do on the offensive side of the ball, he still will impact the game on defense. Going into his junior season, he could end up emerging as the team's leading tackler.

We mentioned earlier in the preview that the Bomber offense will be boosted this season by the return of the running back. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1343460' first='Willie' last='Cramer'] is back and ready to roll one more time. Last season, Cramer would finish the year with nearly 1,100 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also finished with a little over 150 carries. We could see that number go up this season and if that happens, the yards and touchdowns could also go up. Looking at the Class A-1 landscape, you have to mention Cramer as one of the top running backs in the class coming into this fall. The Bombers will lean on Cramer early on in the season while the new starters come along.

You can certainly make the argument that junior [player_tooltip player_id='1343457' first='Zane' last='Tyler'] was one of the best two-way players for the Bombers last season. As a sophomore, Tyler was a complimentary player on the offensive side of the ball. He could be used in a variety of ways and situations and usually rose to the occasion. On defense, Tyler was excellent in the secondary as a safety. He would finish the year with over 60 tackles on the year and three interceptions. This season, Tyler has an opportunity that's similar to Wells. He could really explode on the offensive side of the ball. But even if that doesn't happen, he still returns on defense and will be a big part of what they do.

MORE NAMES TO KNOW

Braylin Hunt - 2027 Running Back
Daveion Adolph - 2026 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
Josh Cortez - 2025 Offensive/Defensive Lineman
Talan Sheffield - 2025 Running Back/Defensive Back

2024 SCHEDULE/GAMES TO CIRCLE

Sept. 6th - AT Wellington, TX.
- Frederick is less than 30 minutes away from the Oklahoma-Texas border and the non-district schedule certainly reflects that. The Bombers will open the season in Texas against Wellington. This will be the first of three straight games against Texas opponents. Frederick is no stranger to playing Texas teams. Two out of the three non-district games last year were against Texas foes. The only Oklahoma opponent from last year's non-district slate is now a district game with Hobart in week six.
Sept. 13th - Childress, TX.
Sept. 20th - AT Vernon, TX.
Sept. 27th - AT Minco
- Frederick will finally play an Oklahoma team when they open up district play in week four. It will also see the Bombers go on the road for the third time in four weeks when they face Minco. And the Bulldogs could end up being the favorite in this district. They are a borderline top five team in our preseason rankings for Class A-1. It's only the first week of district play but this game will be very important for playoff seed purposes. This game could actually end up deciding the district championship.
Oct. 4th - Okemah
Oct. 11th - AT Hobart
Oct. 17th - Christian Heritage
- In week seven, on a Thursday night, the Bombers will host Christian Heritage in another game featuring top ten teams in our Class A-1 preseason rankings. The Crusaders will be a new district opponent for Frederick but not a new opponent altogether. These two teams squared off in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs in 2020. Frederick prevailed 49-20. Both teams are coming into this season looking to take advantage of dropping down from 2A football to Class A football.
Oct. 25th - AT Wynnewood
Nov. 1st - Walters
Nov. 8th - Stratford

NOTABLE

Frederick was one of many schools in Oklahoma that got thrown into a whirlwind back in April. When several Oklahoma City private schools won a decision against the OSSAA, that sparked an emergency redistricting shuffle and there were several schools that not only ended up changing districts, they changed classes altogether. Frederick was one of those schools. Originally, the Bombers were slated to be in Class 2A-2 and they would have been one of the smaller schools in the new class division. But after the shuffle, they find themselves as one of the larger schools in the new Class A-1. The Bombers have a good chance to compete right away. The last time they were in Class A, they were a consistent winning program, making multiple playoff appearances. Class A-1 definitely will provide challenges but we think this is a team that could be a breakout team in the new class.

LAST FIVE SEASONS

2023 - 6-5 - Lost In Class 2A 1st Round
2022 - 8-4 - Lost In Class 2A 2nd Round
2021 - 5-5 - Missed Playoffs
2020 - 9-3 - Lost In Class 2A Quarterfinals
2019 - 9-3 - Lost In Class A 2nd Round

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

5 State Championships

1996 - Beat Wewoka 33-19
1995 - Beat Vinita 39-7
1994 - Beat Marlow 34-13
1993 - Beat Seminole 13-6
1956 - Beat Okmulgee Dunbar 33-0
