After an action-packed weekend of middle school football action at the Kentucky vs. Tennessee Future Stars Game, it's time to break down the top defensive standouts that made their presence known at EKU's Roy Kidd Stadium. Following Team Tennessee's 14-12 victory over the Bluegrass State, here's my list of the top 6th grade defensive standouts on the Volunteers' roster.

Eschenburg made a considerable difference for the Volunteers through four quarters on both sides of the ball. On the defensive end, Eschenburg impressed me with his ability to pierce through the pocket and shut down the run game. I also liked how Eschenburg could read the offense like a book and quickly take down receivers after the catch. Eschenburg could also use bursts of speed to stop the rush.

Perkins was a huge defensive gamechanger for Team Tennessee as he recovered a fumble and took the ball all the way to the house in the first half to tie things up at 6-6. Perkins also proved himself with his ability to cover offensive weapons in one-on-one scenarios down the stretch as well as protect the backfield with his quickness off the snap.

On a day in-which he would be named the 6h grade Tennessee Defensive MVP, Humphrey impressed me with his ability to read the offense and utilize his electric speed to catch the quarterback on the run from along the edge. Humphrey also made a difference down the stretch, using his size and wingspan to lock down the backfield and prevent the deep pass. Humphrey also stood out in the pocket, using his size to cause chaos for the opposition.

Shelton stood out at the line of scrimmage with his ability to read the quick handoff and maneuver the pocket to take down the running back. Shelton also stood out with his ability to apply heavy defensive pressure on the quarterback on the blitz, showcasing his ability to shut down the offense in significant moments.

Bishop caught my attention with his quick execution, ability to pierce through the offensive line and his ability to knock the running back to the ground. Bishop also proved he could provide great coverage and shut down the short pass.

Ross caught my eye in the second half of the 6th grade contest, making an outstanding tackle on the running back from along the edge.
