The majority of the participants were rising Seniors but there were a few underclassmen that caught my eye. Here is a look at the players that I wrote about in that first article and what they have done since.
Marshun Horton
Marshun Horton
Horton was a guy that impressed me last Summer with his overall athleticism at the Camp. “He has all the intangible skills to be a good player: Height, good frame that can still add weight, good speed and agility.” He also had limited film last Summer but had an outstanding Junior season with the clips to go with it.
He was the receiving leader last season for the 12-1 Lions with 35 catches for 694 yards and 6 TDs. He will be paired with one of the top rising Sophomore QBs in the State this Fall as JR Harris JR Harris 5’9″ | 165 lbs | QB Central Carrollton | 2027 State GA returns behind center. Has added 10 pounds since last Summer without missing a step.
He is headed to the track State Championship this weekend as the 400m and High Jump Region champion.
Since last Summer he has added offers from Western Kentucky, Army and Troy.
Manny Watkins
Manny Watkins
Watkins was a recruit that I had my eye on before the Shorter Camp last year. Long and lean and very strong in the weight room. An explosive tackler with a great 1st step that gets downhill fast to the line of scrimmage. Plays good man to man coverage and is physical with strong hands.
The projected strong safety picked up a lot of traction in the recruiting world this off season. Rivals ranked him out as a 3-Star and pulled in several D1 offers.
He had a good trip to Myrtle Beach back in April and was impressed enough with the staff and facilities there to give Coastal Carolina a commitment.
Last Summer was my 1st time seeing Green and walked away impressed. “…speed to stretch the field vertically and understands the concept of catching the ball at its high point against smaller defenders”rnI had a 2nd chance to see Green 2 weeks ago at the Prep Redzone Combine where he took away Top honors in the WR category. He measured out at 6’2 243 and blew the metrics out of the water. Ran a top 5 40 yard dash and L-Cone and had a 10’4 broad jump.
Interesting recruit that could play at multiple positions at the next level. Since last years Camp he has picked up 1st Team All Region and All Forsyth County honors. Outstanding in the classroom with a 3.8 GPA.
Colleges are taking note of this diamond in the rough with Jax St, Kennesaw St, Wofford and Miami (OH) taking interest as of late. Steal for someone in the next recruiting cycle.
Highlights
Logan Stokes
Logan Stokes
The 6’4 235 has been one of my favorite prospects in the local area over the last 2 seasons. “Tall athletic frame that is just starting to fill out. Shows the speed and athletic ability…”. Stokes plays all 3 major sports at Trion and has added 18 pounds of muscle since we saw him at Shorter last Summer.
He could easily play offense or defense at the next level but I think the defensive side of the ball may be his natural spot. Plays with a lot of intensity and has a nasty streak that transitions well at the DE spot.
He had 27 catches last season for 409 yards for the Region Champs, adding 6 TDs. All Region performer on the defensive side with 109 TT and 6 sacks. An all-around athlete that can throw a baseball and shoot a basketball.
Since last Summer he has picked up offers from Cornell and Wofford and has interest from several other D1 program. He was recently on campus at Georgia State and Bryant and Southern Illinois have shown interest.
Stegall was one of the rising Sophomores that caught my attention last Summer. “Had a good 5-10-5 cone time (4.40). Excellent at the back pedal for a freshman.” rnThe 6’2 192 safety was 2nd Team All Region last season in 3-5A as a Sophomore and his first season starting at the varsity level. Had 67 TT and recovered 2 fumbles last season. A physical guy that has good vision and gets downhill quick. Good fundamental tackler that will even be more polished once he gets a few seasons in the weight room. He has already added 10 pounds since we saw him last Summer and is up to 192 now and should eclipse the 200 pound mark by the time he graduates. Good safety prospect going forward.
Jayse Turner
Jayse Turner
Turner was a rising Sophomore when we saw him last Summer. He was coming off a Freshman campaign where he was named HM All Region OL for the Rebels and he held his own at Camp against more veteran players. “Showed good balance and knee bend in the 1 v 1 drills. Slides well with good use of hands, good agility for a big guy.”rnJayse followed up his freshman season with a solid sophomore season last Fall. Was named 2nd team All Region in 2-7A. Good run blocker that gets plenty of work in the run heavy Rebel offense the last few seasons. One to keep an eye on as he keeps climbing the ladder and improving.
