With plenty of college programs in attendance, these are some of the players I think will have the best chance at gaining exposure and continue showing what they can do on the field.
King Kumahlor
King Kumahlor
A towering defensive end, King Kumahlor is a dominant force lining up for Millbrook. Averaging a sack per game, King was no easy player to stop in his pursuit of the quarterback. This is the type of defender that strikes fear into opposing runners. King’s frame alone prevents him from being manipulated by blockers, as he holds his position he can force the runner back inside or swallow them up if they attempt to take it to the outside. This is a player that I wish was in New Jersey so I could cover his accomplishments throughout the season. For now, I will look forward to the Combine to see what he can do.
Luca Smith
Luca Smith
A twitchy linebacker for Chaminade, Luca Smith is another athletic defender opponents need to be worried about. A player that consistently fights off blockers to get to the ball carrier, Luca is relentless in his pursuit and has the ability to get into the backfield very quickly. Lining up off of the edge, Luca is equipped with swift hand skills that allows him to keep blockers away and bring pressure to the pocket. This is a player I could see developing into a true talent at the next level.
Izaiah Hill
Izaiah Hill
A player that excelled at the JV level, Izaiah Hill is ready to take it to the next level and show what he can do with varsity reps. A smaller back, Izaiah used his size to his advantage to navigate easily through traffic and to the end zone.
Izaiah sets himself apart with how quickly he can react to defenders in the vicinity. Explosive out of the backfield, Izaiah can change directions in a split second and leave the defender wondering where he went. With great vision and ability to find ways to shake off defenders, Izaiah always has the potential to make a play out of nothing.
Carlos Malespin
Carlos Malespin
The lone lineman on the list, Carlos Malespin is a reliable blocker in the pass and run game. Carlos is quick with his first step, especially when he pulls he is able to open his hips up and hug tight to the line to take on the first defender he sees. Very few defenders can stop Carlos from driving them into the secondary once they are with his reach, he keeps his legs churning until he plants them into the ground. I am excited to see Carlos’ pass blocking skills on display at the combine.
Frank Dellarosa
Frank Dellarosa
The final player on the list and the last of the series, Frank Dellarosa is another linebacker that demands respect from NY. While not as quick as the others on the list, Frank is a rugged middle linebacker that is prepared to fight within the trenches. He has great anticipation and can shoot the gap as soon as he sees his opportunity arise.
I can see Frank turning into quite the prospect for Iona. He has the frame to command the center of the defense, and as he continues to work on his quickness and puts on more size he will become a very tough linebacker to go up against.
