The circuit of back-to-back-to-back weekends on the road has come to a conclusion, as I was fortunate to attend Coach Nick Pennisi's PSR BIG Camp Series on Saturday, May 11. This marks the second year in a row that I covered the event. Pennisi has grown his significantly from last year. With over 400 prospects registered for the event, I had my work cut out for me to identify and scout some of the event's standouts. As I feverishly wrote notes, here are my scouting notes from the position group disclosed in this article's title.

Scout's Notebook: Defensive Backs

Starting off my last piece on defensive backs from the PSR BIG Combine Series we focus on two prospects from Mount Olive: [player_tooltip player_id='1191706' first='Rondell' last='Derrick'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1284781' first='Anthony' last='Collier'], both graduates of the class of 2025. [player_tooltip player_id='1191706' first='Rondell' last='Derrick'] did a really nice job riding and pressing the hip of his matchup when defending the pass. In doing so, he was able to sense, and thus avoid, any sudden breaks in his matchups' route and maintain tight coverage. By pressing that hip, Derrick either eliminates routes back toward his leverage or forces the receiver to fight through the man to get to his spot - likely drawing am offensive pass interference penalty in the process..... I did not get as thorough a look at [player_tooltip player_id='1284781' first='Anthony' last='Collier'], despite wishing I did. Collier profiles more as a safety in my opinion, as he towers at 6'2" 175lbs. I would describe his frame as wiry and long with room to grow. He would be the type of prospect that I would want on my team. With a season's worth of good film and the frame he has, I can see colleges certainly liking him as a recruit after the fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='1170233' first='Josiah' last='Zayas'] is tall, thick defensive back hailing from St. Thomas Aquinas. Self-reported at 6'2" 190lbs, Zayas was able to run with most of his assignments; however, what made him stand out to me was how he used his large frame to influence routes. For example, one rep I saw of Zayas had him ever-so-slightly bump and run downfield with his matchup. As they jockeyed for position, Zayas gradually eliminated space between his matchup and the sideline, making for a tough completion with the minimization of any buffer to convert a reception while in-bounds..... St. Joseph Regional's [player_tooltip player_id='909629' first='Nasir' last='Snead'] can fly and can move well. From what I noticed, Snead stayed stride-for-stride all the way downfield with who I thought was the camp's fastest wide receiver. Adding to this, because it was a 1-on-1 situation, against these tight coverages routes had the tendency to cross over to the other side of the field, effectively running a deep bender/crosser. Snead ran with that matchup the entire time, forcing what would be a coverage sack and also forced a throw for the sake of the rep in the process..... From Voorhees can [player_tooltip player_id='1284784' first='Logan' last='Direny'], a 2026 graduate. Direny was able to stick by and cover most of his matchups throughout the afternoon. An area of upside Direny has is tracking the ball as it is in mid-flight. Expanding upon this skillset will allow him to tip, deflect, and play the ball more rather than playing the hands post-touch.

Closing out today is a prospect that, I think, registered as a defensive back since all the wide receiver slots had filled up: Camden's [player_tooltip player_id='1228164' first='Malik' last='Redd']. This was the second weekend in a row that I laid eyes on Redd and he followed up a dominant performance at the much smaller Jersey Juice event with one worth of applause at a much larger, more competitive PSR BIG Camp with way more college coaches. Redd was quick off off the line, winning his release and creating separation immediately. Further, he proved as a reliable hands catcher and, and whether it was a duck or a dart, adjusted to the flight of the ball well. Redd can stand to refine his cuts and breaks, particularly by dropping his hips as he breaks the stem of his route while continuing to buzz his feet, as his breaking routes were rounded at times.
