East St. Louis Underclassmen Start Month Off With a Bang

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Illinois 6A competitor <em>East St. Louis </em>is one of my favorite high school programs in the country. Situated between the two fertile recruiting grounds of Southern Illinois and the St. Louis metro area, the <em>Flyers </em>put out a special kind of athlete and prospect who have been making waves in the highest levels of college football and the recruiting world year after year and at a very high clip since I began working for <em>PrepRedzone</em>. At this point, it's not a well kept secret that the 10x state champion's<em> </em>roster is filled with dogs, but I can't say I've seen such a systematic and intentional underclassmen offer effort than we saw at the beginning of May down in<em> East St. Louis</em>. You've heard me say it before, but the MAC recruits the Land of Lincoln as well as anybody, and we saw the likes of Miami (OH) and Kent State put their money where their mouth is and show a seriously concerted belief in the 6A powerhouse. I'll always applaud a college program evaluate, invest, and believe in a prospect enough to become their first offer, especially an FBS program, and I can't remember seeing this many recruits from one high school program earn FBS offers at one time this early. Great build at 6'3, 220 lbs. and one of the hardest hitters in the entire state, u003cstrongu003eHowardu003c/strongu003e heard from Miami (OH) on the first, and Kent State and UNLV on the ninth for a great start to what has the makings to be a prolific recruiting journey.rnrnAlready a two-year varsity contributor, u003cstrongu003eHowardu003c/strongu003e played all over the field in 2023, mostly as an OLB, both at the LOS and off-ball, as well as significant ILB reps, and even showed some 3T in his junior highlights, displaying some lightning-quick feet and impressive twitch that allowed him to cause his usual havoc but from the middle of the LOS. He can beat blockers with either strength or quickness, as well as technique, and keeps his hands active when defeating blocks, and when the 230 lber. has a full head of steam he destroys would-be blockers at the point of attack. u003cstrongu003eHoward'su003c/strongu003e play speed is noticeable and disruptive, and he's a sideline-to-sideline kid who seeks and destroys like a missile between the whistles. It's hard not to be impressed by how he triggers and pursues the rock, as well as how aggressive and powerful of a tackler he is. u003cstrongu003eHoward u003c/strongu003eregularly drives ball carriers backfield and negates any chance of a RB gaining extra yardage. His nickname on X of u0022Terminatoru0022 seems fitting when you see his playstyle. Experienced and successful on both the camp circuit and against varsity opponents padded up on the gridiron, u003cstrongu003eTillman u003c/strongu003ecan play either guard or tackle and is an athletic and versatile body on a high-paced and explosive u003cemu003eFlyersu003c/emu003e offense. The sophomore OL opens his tape with a thundering hit that put the 5-star DE from u003cemu003eEdwardsvilleu003c/emu003e flying onto his face on a pull block, and I'm impressed by his balance, base, and general mobility. The 300 lber. is experienced in pass protection and is comfortable and agile working backward or laterally, and he looks quick and fluid when working to the second level. Still has some work to do, but I'm excited to see how he continues to develop. Also put his hand in the dirt as a more traditional 3-4 DE and even has reps as a 3T from 2023. I like his arsenal as a pass rusher, as u003cstrongu003eMcintosh u003c/strongu003ehas a sharpened tool shed of counters, the ability to go speed-to-power, a little bit of twitch, a quick first step, and a deadly spin move he can pull out here and there. He's also a strong kid that can make tackles through contact, use a powerful punch to his advantage that he times out well and uses effectively, so much so that he knocked a couple OL flat on their butts in 2023. The combination of power and change of direction ability was an overwhelming combination for most prep OTs and OGs he saw last fall. However, u003cstrongu003eBerryhill Jr.u003c/strongu003e is strong for his age and is able to assert himself in run blocking, even against nationally-ranked DL opponents, and also displayed the ability to start/stop and make minor body adjustments in space that can sometimes be hard with linemen of his age who are still growing into and getting comfortable in their bodies. The 155 lber. also demonstrates good footwork in his releases, shiftiness at the top of the route, and the ability to break his routes off cleanly. The 6'3 TE is a particular asset in the red zone, and his strong hands and a huge wingspan give u003cstrongu003eSharpu003c/strongu003e a massive catch radius, one that can reel in receptions through contact and tight coverage. He can break off his routes well, is a big, strong, powerful ball carrier after the catch, has a rep showing some serious speed on kickoff coverage, and is an aggressive, motivated blocker with both technique and pop who can overwhelm and dominate DBs in space. An athletic and well-built pass-catching body, u003cstrongu003eSharpu003c/strongu003e is the type of WR/TE hybrid who can absolutely dominate a prep football defense and take over a game, and that same frame can develop into monstrous proportions at the college level. He can cut at top speed and is powerful and sudden laterally and in the open field. I'm also impressed by his vision, as he runs with patience yet decisiveness, and he sees and finds the cutback well. An offseason of work in the weight room will help transfer his dominant contact balance from JV to varsity opponents as a sophomore, and boy am I excited for this u003cemu003eFlyersu003c/emu003e RB room in 2024.
