As I ease back into covering North Carolina high school football, I am excited to build off of my colleagues by breaking down their rankings. In this series, I'm going through our 2027 rankings and analyzing every ranked player. Next up are the running backs in what could be a late-blooming, but talented, class.

2027 Running Backs to Watch

This is a late-blooming class in which some guys thrived as freshmen, but so far, no one player has separated himself as a potential top 3-5 player in the class. That could change as bodies develop and players receive more opportunities. For now, these are the guys highest on our radar.

[player_tooltip player_id='1084981' first='Karvin' last='Magwood'], 5'10 175, New Bern

Magwood was the state's leading rusher among freshmen, due to his patience and home run ability as a runner. He came on strong at the end of the year, finishing with three straight 100-yard games on the ground, averaging 133 yards from scrimmage over the last four games of the season. Magwood did most of his damage against some of the fiercest competition in the state, making us confident in the likelihood that his game translates to the next level.

[player_tooltip player_id='1106564' first='Calvin' last='Lacewell'], 5'10 180, Lakewood

Lacewell plays in a variation of the Wing T, which can make it somewhat difficult to evaluate him. Accordingly, I'd love to see him in person. He's physically impressive, already with excellent size and speed, which translates to the field. He runs through arm tackles and looks like he could take another step forward as a sophomore.

[player_tooltip player_id='378957' first='Amir' last='Brown'], 5'10 190, Millbrook

Brown is physically impressive and due for a move up the rankings. He runs with good balance and has the speed to get to the edge. I'd like to see him run with a bit better pad level as he tends to run upright, but that's easily fixable and indicative of how much potential he has with a few mechanical tweaks. As it stands, he has the potential to be a big recruit.

[player_tooltip player_id='618689' first='Myles' last='Eatmon'], 5'9 190, Wilson Prep

Eatmon didn't get a ton of opportunities as he was buried on the depth chart behind multiple seniors, but he made the most of each carry, averaging 10 yards a touch. He's a patient one-cut runner who excels at finding the hole and cutting upfield for maximum yardage. He should shed more tackles as he gets bigger and faster, but he's definitely a guy to watch.
