These young signal callers displayed plenty of upside during their freshmen season and are definite names to know entering the 2024 season. All but one started as a freshman on varsity and as far as I can tell, only one has a single FCS offer. Look for that to change if they have a big sophomore campaign.
As always, If you have someone you think I need to see, please DM them to me on Twitter at @hsfbscout!
Brady Young, 6’4″ 180, New Richmond, OH
A strong-armed prospect, that has a tight spiral and throws a feathery deep ball. He calmly slides up & around the pocket to evade the rush, he can add zip to throws at a moment’s notice and shows consistent poise throughout. He’s a small school kid that should garner attention very soon.
Cooper Newman, 6’2″ 190, Sevier County, TN
Newman shows refined footwork, he squares his shoulders when throwing on the run, and has the arm talent to stretch the field vertically. His receivers rarely have to break stride on shot throws and he has the athletic ability to adlib when the protection breaks down.
Gunner Rivers, 6’3″ 185, St. Michael Catholic, AL
The son of future Hall of Famer Phillip Rivers, Gunner has already begun to forge his own legacy. As a freshman on varsity, he threw for 3,077 yards and 29 touchdowns. He’s got a twitchy lower half, he can get the ball out of his hand quickly on called RPOs, and will consistently work to his third read in the progression if nothing presents itself early.
Zephyr Kreye, 6’4″ 200, Denton Guyer, TX
Kreye did his work at the lower levels but did impress me on tape with his ability to throw off-platform and his masterful improvisational skills. He plays with a comfortable base, can add zip for tight-window throws, and has value as a runner in short-yardage or goalline situations. He’s raw and has got some things to work on, but I do see the potential here.
Hank Hendrix, 6’2″ 170, Boerne, TX
Hendrix had an 18:1 touchdown to interception ratio in 2023, if that doesn’t tell you how well he protects the football, I don’t know what will. He’s deadly accurate, having completed 70% of his passes last fall, he plays fearless against the rush and shows exceptional touch throwing on the move.
