A total of ten teams competed in the 12U division, with Legacy taking home the championship trophy Sunday morning. In part one of our series, we’re looking at some of the top prospects we saw on both day one and day two.
QB: Paxton Smalling, Tfp Flite Boyz
A filled-out young prospect with balanced footwork, a quick wind-up, and impressive timing. Smalling is a competitor who lives for big moments and can make tough throws when his team needs it the most. He’s consistent, places the deep ball in stride, and can throw off awkward platforms.
WR: Ty Ty Hilton, Tfp Flite Boyz
The son of T.Y. Hilton, Ty has the same explosiveness that his father dazzled with for years in the NFL. This young man is electric after the catch and made multiple defenders look silly in the process. His releases are quick, refined, and extremely misleading. His route-running ability is well beyond his years for someone his age.
DB: D.J. Provens, 256
Provens is a kid who doesn’t look his age. He’s got good size, natural change of direction, and a knack for finding the football when it’s in the air. D.J. was a playmaker at both wider receiver and defensive back for 256 and seemed to come up big for them time and time again.
WR/LB: Michael Thompson Ayers, Legacy
An impressive mixture of speed and size. Ayers is smooth dropping to his hook responsibility, he’s got terrific read and react skills & doesn’t fight the football when it comes time to make a play on the ball. He’s got a gamer-type feel to him as well.
ATH: Zavier Hunter, Legacy
This young man could have been the best 12U prospect that we saw. You name it, he had it: speed, twitch, playmaking ability, leaping ability, sticky coverage skills, and natural hands. The game I saw, Hunter had an interception and an acrobatic leaping touchdown grab. Don’t be surprised when you hear this kid’s name being called at the high school level.
WR: Jayden Hunter, Savages
Thompson is a long prospect who likely will end up as a tight end at the next level. He goes up & high points the football, he shows excellent concentration through contested catches and is a major mismatch if left 1 on 1 in the redzone. For a bigger prospect, he moves pretty well and can adjust his frame to make tough catches on underthrows. This kid has a very high ceiling.
