Nearly every position is loaded up with underclassmen ready to return with a lot of hard earned experience. Newark Central is a team I see greatly improving in 2024, and will put the rest of their division on notice.
There are few QBs in the state that get the chance to start as freshman, let alone those that actually thrive when they see the field. Andrew Wright Andrew Wright 5’10” | 150 lbs | QB Newark Central | 2027 State NJ is one of those anomalies that stepped right into the role and didn’t skip a beat. Tossing for 1103 yards and 10 touchdowns last fall, Andrew made it look automatic as he looked off defenders to get them moving the opposite direction of his intended target. He has great chemistry with his receivers, often getting them the ball as soon as they are out of their break. What really sets Andrew apart is his fearlessness with the deep ball. He isn’t afraid to take some shots downfield and let his man run under it.
The most exciting part about Newark Central’s roster is that they not only have talented players on each side of the ball, but that their most impactful players are starting both ways and thriving. Nahshon Brown Nahshon Brown 5’10” | 175 lbs | RB Newark Central | 2025 NJ is no exception. On offense, you could find Nahshon darting by defenders as he scampered for 643 yards and 6 touchdowns in 2023 as the lead RB. Nahshon’s running style combined power and quick bursts of acceleration. He can cut through the middle and force defenders to whiff on him, and can also make opponents regret ever trying to tackle him up high.
Defensively, Nahshon terrorized opponents as a rover/outside linebacker. A constant reminder to opposing quarterbacks, Nahshon was destructive whenever he brought the rush and was also a worry when he dropped into coverage. Coming up with 56 tackles, 4 sacks and an interception, Nahshon always found a way to be involved in the play.
The second two way starter on this list, Jahsyn Reid Jahsyn Reid 6’3″ | 185 lbs | ATH Newark Central | 2025 NJ is an absolute burner when he lines up out wide and is a multifunctional athlete on the defensive side of the ball as well. Built with hands to reel the ball in from afar, Jahsyn is a favorite target of Andrew as he caught 5 touchdowns ad 434 yards in 2023. The type of receiver you hope defenses isolate on the outside, Jahsyn’s speed allows him to take off from the snap and tear by the corner before they can get their hips around to keep up. Racking up 59 tackles, 2 interceptions and 2 sacks on defense, Jahsyn showed that he is a hybrid defender that can act like a linebacker when up towards the line and can also drop back into coverage and provide help in the secondary .
A player that is going to get a ton of opportunities on boths sides of the ball next season, freshman Dishon Jerman Dishon Jerman 5’11” | 170 lbs | WR Newark Central | 2027 State NJ really stepped it up last fall especially on the defensive side of the ball. A playmaking corner, Dishon was able to dominate his side of the field as he reeled in 4 interceptions and forced a fumble on top of it. Offensively, Dishon is a twitchy receiver off of the line. Racking up 286 yards and 3 touchdowns, Dishon’s quick stutter step gets the defender twisted up, giving him an opportunity to distance himself and create an easy throwing lane. This a player from the 2027 class you need to get familiar with.
Highlights
A player I recently highlighted in the Watchlist series, Jayden Worilds Jayden Worilds 5’10” | 165 lbs | DB Newark Central | 2026 NJ is one of the returning talents from Newark Central that made his biggest impact lining up in the secondary. With 54 tackles and 4 interceptions on the year, Jayden utilized his big frame to make it a tough matchups against opposing receivers. Jayden has a ton of range in his coverage abilities, and you’ll often find him staying glued to receivers as the sprint across the field. Newark Central has a ton of talent coming back in the secondary next season.
