Continue ReadingThe Charter School conference is one of the most unique conferences in all of Michigan. Unlike other big conferences, I don’t see a ton of attention given to most of the charter school teams outside of MI Collegiate. This article will headline six of the best new defensive prospects I watched from this league, plus one bonus prospect from the Central State Silver League.
’26 DT | Jalil Lakey Jalil Lakey 5'10" | 240 lbs | DL Voyaguer Prep | 2026 State MI | Detroit Voyageur | Hudl
5’10 240lbs
Jalil has all the tools needed to develop into an elite defensive tackle prospect. Last season, he managed to be productive despite not being the most polished player. His leverage and power allowed him to bull rush through the interior O-Line better than most. He was a menace up the middle and excelled at stopping the run. Jalil could be a superstar if he dedicates himself to getting stronger and more explosive. If Jalil is able to improve his explosiveness off the line, become stronger, and more fit, he could be a High D2-D1 prospect relatively soon.
’27 S | Jamarion Jenkins | Detroit Voyageur | Hudl
Jamarion is another young player who could develop into something special. What I see is an insanely instinctive, fearless player who played at a high level during his freshman season. Look at the highlight at 1:10. Jamarion begins closing on the receiver before the quarterback releases the ball. Although he doesn’t make the PBU, Jamarion’s instincts and athleticism gave him a chance. Other highlights show him in good man coverage and a few good run stops. He also has a few offensive highlights where he shows potential in the open field.
’27 DE/TE | Cordale Clark-Bey Cordale Clark-Bey 6'2" | 200 lbs | DL Voyageur Prep | 2027 MI | Detroit Voyageur | Hudl
6’2″ 200
It seems like Detroit Voyageur has an incredible foundation of young talent, and it continues with Cordale. Although still a raw prospect, I love his motor, getoff, and speed off the edge. He does a good job at setting the edge and takes advantage of his opportunities where he may end up unblocked. With consistent development, Cordale will be a good college prospect in a few years.
’25 S/WR | John Hazard | Edison | Hudl
5’10 150lbs
Although most of John’s highlights are on the offensive side of the ball, I think he’s a better safety prospect than anything. Defensively, he has decent closing speed, and shows some instinctual playmaking ability. The strip at 1:28 is a prime example of smart football. The highlight at 0:30 shows good athleticism and a potentially good vertical. Offensively, he flashes some open-field ability and tough catches, but I don’t think he’s shown enough on offense to warrant college offers. John’s defensive skillset could be utilized very well at the college level if he decides to go that route.
’25 DB | Jermiah Mack | Ecorse | Hudl
6’1
Jermiah’s outside DB film shows a good amount of promise. Namely, the couple highlights where he breaks on the football for an interception. When he’s in coverage and the ball is thrown inaccurately, he’s able to break on the ball and attempt to make a play. He also has a few decent run defense highlights and special teams plays. He looks like a high-motor player, and I’m interested to see what else he could do as an outside DB.
’25 ATH | DesMond Murphy DesMond Murphy 6'0" | 155 lbs | DB Summit Academy North | 2025 MI | Summit Academy | Hudl
DesMond has some great instincts as a defensive back. The highlights below strictly show his defensive plays, and considering these highlights are pinned to his profile, it’s safe to say he’s a DB, first and foremost. He has several PBUs on poorly thrown balls where he’s already in good coverage. Even on plays where he’s not particularly close to the ball, he has decent closing speed. His 9 PBUs speak for themselves. Offensively, he put up 602 yards and 12TDs on offense. A great, productive player, I’d love to see DesMond at an offseason camp.
’26 OLB | Andre Meade Andre Meade 6'3" | 200 lbs | LB Kent City | 2026 State MI | Kent City | Hudl
6’3 200lbs
Here’s a bonus prospect from the Central State Silver League. The league didn’t have enough players for me to write an article on it, so I’m including Andre here. He’s a raw outside linebacker prospect, but there are a few things I really like. First off, his height is great. 6’3″ is a great height for an outside backer, and he also looks to have long limbs. I also like his versatility. He’s spent time as an off-ball backer who can defend the pass and as an EDGE rusher. At the EDGE position, I’d like to see more tenacity and motor.
