Continue ReadingThese are my top ball carriers in order from our PRZ Next Winter camps this past December and January. I took into account their performance from camp, and each individual’s resume placed on the field this past fall. There are so many different types of running backs so I tried to rely on the basic building blocks of a great runner (Vision, Speed, Power, Balance, Ball Skills/Security, BPA- Big Play Ability). All of the players mentioned received MVP and/or Top Performer.
6.) Jacobi Harris – 5’8 160
RB Type: All-Purpose
Grades ()
Vision (8) Has good peripheral sight. Can make the exaggerated cut backs.
Speed (8) Finish top 5% at GA camp in 40, shuttle, #1 in L Cone. Nice giddy up from behind the line of scrimmage. Can get the edge.
Power (8) Charted an 8’11 broad jump in front of scouts. Does not stop feet on contact. Gives second effort when wrapped up.
Balance (8) Utilizes weapons well without being out of control too much.
Ball Security (7.5) Is fully aware of taking care of the football and a good option to stretch defense of swing routes.
BPA-Big Play Ability (8) So physical and his approach doesn’t change. Jacobi wants a big play every time he touches the pill.
Multi sport athlete (football, baseball) who tied my #5. Will transition into a high school back quicker than most I believe. With that being said, don’t be shocked if he’s in the top 3 spots collectively come late fall. His stats from last year were video game numbers weekly.
Writer Lawrence Morgan placed his attention on Harris being able to crush testing and felt he was very twitchy.
Highlights
7.) Brandon Gray – 5’8 155 lbs, Georgia
RB Type: All-Purpose
Grades ()
Vision (8) Zig zags through traffic with a purpose. You. can see him scanning for any soft spots in the defense as he’s getting making ground.
Speed (8) Top 5 in all testing. #1 shuttle time for RBs. Enough burst to make you sweat. Has good wheels to get outside and finish big gains.
Power (7.5) Strong lower half that pulls defenders with him even if they try to tackle from behind for a couple extra inches.
Balance (7.5) Changes direction smoothly. Fights to stay up
Ball Security (8) Protects ball, limited exposure to running routes but is a skilled athlete
BPA-Big Play Ability (7.5) First down machine. Will pop one off when it’s there. Will become more of a threat to house it more often as he develops in a high school weight room.
I like Gray. Had the pleasure of covering him in Septembers article (https://prepredzone.com/2023/09/2028-ball-carriers-from-the-peach-state-on-the-rise/) of RBs rising out of Georgia. He has a lot of the attributes, but with a little more seasoning he is going to wreck high school if he gets enough carries to get in his flow.
Writer Lawrence Morgan liked what he saw in Brandon’s frame and how well he did competing in Atlanta.
Highlights
8.) Matthew Rogers – 5’8 160 lbs
RB Type: All-Purpose
Grades ()
Vision (8) Sees the field well at mesh point. Cut back king. Sets up blocks when needed downfield.
Speed (8) Tough to catch. Knows how to control acceleration.
Power (7.5) Would rather make you miss, but runs hard at point of contact.
Balance (8) Extends stiff arm a little to frequent but changes direction clean. Has the agility to bounce off hits and keep redirecting in traffic.
Ball Security (8) Ball comes off ribs once he kicks it in gear, but is still reliable when you get down to it. Can be a receiving threat as well.
BPA-Big Play Ability (8.5) Highlight tape if full of big plays. A lot of terrible tackling attempts, but I don’t want to penalize Rogers for that. After a couple sportscenter runs I would be cautious on trying to tackle him too.
Matthew is going to take what you give him and a little more if you seem like you’re throwing in the towel early. Kid has a lot of talent and could be a big time sleeper before the offers explode in a couple seasons if that.
Writer Drew Toennies was immediately impressed with his combination of size, speed, and power.
Highlights
9.) Jamarion Morrison – 5’10 200
RB Type: Power
Grades ()
Vision (7.5) Has a tendency to error to the side of truck stick when traffic is coming instead of finding seams to crease through.
Speed (7) Not a speedster. Not slow either. Builds up good momentum when linear.
Power (8.5) Kid is so strong. I’ve seen him drag 2-3 players downfield. If you don’t slow him up early it will be a long 4 quarters.
Balance (7.5) Not bad. Not great. In my opinion this is not because Morrison doesn’t have the skill. He wants to take tacklers down the middle to initiate contact and apply discomfort to the middle of their shoulder pads.Sometimes this allows them to still walk away with a tackle after being trucked. Very hard to keep footing when doing this, once the maturity sets in the next level and my man starts running through half a man….ITS OVER!
Ball Security (7.5) Loosy goosy at times in traffic because of the mentality to run over defenders.
BPA-Big Play Ability (7.5) Easily my short yardage back. Although, he’s the kid that will possibly pop one to the crib in a 3 & short or 4 & inches situation.
I seriously think the world of Jamarion. His passion spills out of the way he plays. I’ll keep it a buck. He’s a bully lol but once the technical side gets developed at a high level, he will fun to watch and tough to handle.
Writer Ed Brooks liked Morrison’s agility and display of catching ball.
Highlights
10.) Colin Wright – 5’7 148 lbs
RB Type: Scat
Grades ()
Vision (7.5) I believe Corlin is more of a reactor instead of setting this up when carrying the ball. He wants to play really fast, but that comes at a cost sometime in inside runs.
Speed (8) Fasted 40, 4.5 shuttle at Oklahoma camp. Possesses multiple gears and does not let off the gas whether he is in traffic or not.
Power (7.5) A little light in the backside right now, but is explosive. Won’t make money moving pile, however, finds a way to move chains still.
Balance (8) Using low center of gravity to his advantage. Gets in and out of cuts or route breaks effortlessly
Ball Security (8.5) Solid hands. Catches ball away from body. Can easily offset at a wing or sit at slot and torch LBs & SS all day.
BPA-Big Play Ability (8) Homerun hitter if the other 10 guys can give him enough space.
Haven’t seen much of Corlin in person, but I can tell he is a high IQ kid. Some evaluators will overlook or not credit smaller skills guys, but this kid can go and plays with a lot of heart. I look forward to seeing more.
Writer Michael Knight was distracted in a good way by Wright’s speed and fast feet in drills. Walked away with MVP honors.
