As schools continue to put the finishing touches to their recruiting classes, there are still several hidden gems among the 2024 class, who I believe can make an impact at the next level. So I started the “DON’T SLEEP” series, highlighting some sleepers in the 2024 class.
Check out these four seniors that are still flying under the radar! DON’T SLEEP!!
Colin Pike Colin Pike 5'11" | 185 lbs | RB Skutt Catholic | 2024 State NE | 2024 | RB/LB | Skutt Catholic | 5’11” 185 lbs
Skutt Catholic’s Colin Pike Colin Pike 5'11" | 185 lbs | RB Skutt Catholic | 2024 State NE is a player who has shown consistent growth and development throughout his prep career. This can be seen in Colin’s senior year stat line, where he had 95 carries for 647 rushing yards, 10 rushing touchdowns, 61 receiving yards, a receiving touchdown, a kick return for a touchdown, and a punt return for a touchdown, notching career highs in nearly every category. Colin’s tape is very exciting to watch with how electric and smooth of a runner he is. Pike has great vision and anticipation for where running lanes will be, along with a quick trigger to cut/juke as soon as he sees a crease. Another thing that stands out about Colin is his ability to explode through his change of direction, then he shows off his top-tier acceleration to break away further from defenders. Great balance— Colin’s strong lower body and pad level made him very tough to bring down on first contact. Colin is a solid overall athlete with a reported 4.59 40-yard dash, 4.08 pro-agility, 36″ vertical, and a 9’6 broad jump. Surprisingly, Colin is yet to receive his first offer, and in my opinion, would be a massive steal at this point in the recruiting process.
Brody Peterson Brody Peterson 6'0" | 195 lbs | QB Millard West | 2024 State NE | 2024 | QB | Millard West | 6’0″ 195 lb
Millard West QB Brody Peterson Brody Peterson 6'0" | 195 lbs | QB Millard West | 2024 State NE would easily get a vote from me as one of the most improved players in the 2023 season. Not only did Brody help lead the Wildcats to a semi-final appearance, but he did so very efficiently with 75/116 completions (65%), 1,279 yards, and threw for 14 touchdowns with only one interception. My biggest takeaway from watching Brody’s tape was that his confidence level soared from junior to senior year. You can see Brody trusting his arm and reads a lot more this season, which led to him being a lot quicker and more decisive when getting rid of the ball. Peterson does an especially good job on deep passes, delivering the ball with great placement and with enough air under it to let his receiver get to it. Peterson’s mobility is also a huge plus, as he can maneuver the pocket and extend the play outside of structure very well. Brody is also a threat to burn defenses with his legs, posting 450 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. Peterson holds offers from Peru State, Nebraska Wesleyan, McPherson College, and William Jewell. Tons of potential!!
Trent Patzel Trent Patzel 6'7" | 280 lbs | OL Boone Central | 2024 State NE | 2024 | OL/DL | Boone Central | 6’7″ 280 lbs
To run the ball at the rate the Boone Central does, you better have some horses up on the line, and what better workhorse to have than 6’7″ 280-pound Trent Patzel Trent Patzel 6'7" | 280 lbs | OL Boone Central | 2024 State NE ? Trent was a pivotal player in the Cardinal’s trenches, playing on one of the best-rushing attacks and stingiest defenses in the state. Trent played right guard during his senior year but will more than likely be moved to tackle when he gets to college. The biggest thing that stands out to me about Trent is how mobile he is for his size, displaying great lateral quickness and looking very nimble on his feet. He can reach the second level to clear out LBs in a flash and can be seen 20+ yards downfield looking for more blocks on several of his tapes. Trent’s physicality and mean streak also make him a complete bruiser in the trenches, as he constantly looked to finish off blocks in the dirt. Very lengthy (6’7″ wingspan) with great reach at the point of attack— should come in handy when taking on edge rushers if he gets moved to tackle in college. Trent has received a good amount of attention with offers from Wayne State, Sioux Falls, Midland, Nebraska-Kearney, Peru State, Northern State, South Dakota State (PWO), and Southwest Minnesota State, with several other schools also showing interest. A “high-floor, high-ceiling” player!
Mitchell Hupp Mitchell Hupp 6'3" | 190 lbs | TE Stanton | 2024 State NE | 2024 | TE/LB | Stanton | 6’2″ 185 lbs
The Stanton Mustangs may not have had a ton of seniors on their squad, but the ones they did have played key roles in their championship run. One of those seniors was TE/OLB Mitchell Hupp Mitchell Hupp 6'3" | 190 lbs | TE Stanton | 2024 State NE , who ended with 26 receptions for 820 yards, scored 17 receiving touchdowns, racked up 105 tackles, 2 TFLs, and had a team-high 6 sacks. I could see him playing on either side of the ball at the next level, but with his legit track speed (4.4 40-yard dash and 10.8 100m), it’s hard not to be tempted by his upside at tight end/wide receiver. He averaged an eye-popping 31.5 yards per reception, highlighting his ability to stretch the field vertically. Defenses are forced to send extra attention his way in the passing game; however, his elite wheels still allow him to outrace defenses, and he does a good job exploiting the soft pockets in coverage. Hupp also has hops— showcasing an excellent ability to elevate over defenders to catch the ball at the high point. Tough receiver with strong hands to hold on through contact. Mitchell is one of the top unoffered seniors in the class, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go the track & field route. Regardless, he’s a clear next-level talent!
